The Prohibition of Milk and Meat

In middle of the many logical mitzvahs – most dealing with civil law – that are enumerated in the parshah of Mishpatim, the Torah mentions the super-rational prohibition of cooking milk and meat (Genesis.23:19); what's the significance?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Is There a Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Track?

Is There a Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Track?
By Tzvi Freeman
===============================================

Dear Rabbi,

My doctor recommended that I take up some type of meditation [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8B55667C7E248EB40F275B703E2E3AC3&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], mentioning "mindfulness" as one option. I understand that this particular meditation is connected to idolatry.

Are there Jewish meditation techniques I could use?

Answer:

Mindfulness is a Jewish idea and it is called kavanah.

Take one page of the siddur (prayerbook) [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=02BDF0E43BEF75C71F72E609541C0A09&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and learn the meaning of each word on that page. Learn it as deep as you can. Or maybe, instead of a page, you should start with one line of the prayers—such as the Modeh Ani [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8181C3472F7F03D0EFAC2BFDBE8F65F7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] or the Shema Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CFD6093144CF43A2A9D12A4C734A0E3C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

Practice saying each word with clear mental focus. Ignore any other thought that enters your mind. This is called kavanah.

Slowly, you can build up through the siddur until much of your morning prayer time can be spent in this state.

The same applies to all the blessings on food [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=10B79B5B77DD2FD60373AC7412A7CFCE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] you say during the day. And eventually, every act of living can, and must, be done with kavanah, for the sake of heaven. As Solomon the wise taught, "In all your ways, know Him."[1]

Conscious breathing or some other technique could help as a preparation to this exercise.

For some more detailed guidance, here's a place to begin your journey: The Jewish Meditation Series: Guidance on Mindful Prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E64AAFA0765CF50F5D540C402B6EA04D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

MITZVAH MINUTE: Torah Study

B"H

Shevat 23, 5772 * February 16, 2012

==============
MITZVAH MINUTE
==============

Torah Study
Lighten Up Your Mind

====================

Jews are known as bright people. In fact, we've been a people of books and wisdom for 4,000 years. Which makes for a lot of books and wisdom. What kind of wisdom? Well, there's the basic what-to-do-and-what-not-to-do stuff. Then there's the stories and legends. And there's the real deep what-is-life-all-about wisdom, including the secrets of the Kabbalah and Chassidic masters. It's all there waiting for you. In fact, it's your personal heritage. It's called Torah.

Torah shares the same etymology as the Hebrew word orah, "light"—its teachings shine a light on life and show you which way to go. And its study is a mitzvah—actually, the greatest mitzvah we have.

When:

"You shall teach [it] to your children and speak its words when you sit in your house, when you walk on the way, when you lie down and when you rise"—Deuteronomy.

A Jew is always studying Torah—24/7/365. We take breaks to eat, sleep, pray, make a living and reenergize. The remainder of the time we connect to G-d through studying His wisdom.

The minimum requirement is that you fix some time for study once a day and once a night. Can't devote as much time as you'd like? Support a yeshivah and be a partner in their study.

Who:

The rich and the poor, healthy and sick, old and young, smart or dim. Torah is every Jew's personal heritage.

What:

"It is not your job to finish the task, but neither are you free to absolve yourself from it..."—Ethics.

Start with the rules that impact daily life, Shabbat, holidays, etc. And then keep on learning; there's more than enough material to last several lifetimes.

Articulate the words you study. Allow the holiness to impact and refine your body.

How:

* Join a class at your local Chabad House [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C2CEE0AA376C4E646D25AC09444D3C06&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
* Get online to a Torah learning website, like www.chabad.org.
* Study one-on-one with a scholar. Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FDABF40CDCC5C3E46A315F894D94BC4D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for details.

Torah is the study of G-d thinking.

Marrying G-d (Aaron L. Raskin)
Letters and Numbers of Torah - Mishpatim

The Torah describes the unfortunate situation (Exodus 21:8) of a destitute man who sells his daughter as an indentured servant. The word "lo" in this verse is written lamed-aleph meaning that the man for whom the girl works "did not betroth her as a wife" but it is read as if it were spelled lamed-vav meaning the man for whom the girl works "should have betrothed her as a wife." On a spiritual level, the verse can describe two kinds of relationships that we have with G-d.

How to Become Jewish (By Moshe New)
Parsha Mishpatim

How does a convert finish the conversion process? In the times that the Holy Temple stood, it was necessary to bring a sacrificial offering. What do we do now after the Temple was destroyed? We look closely at the opinion of Maimonides that a convert requires "circumcision, immersion in a mikveh, and when the Temple will be rebuilt, the bringing of an offering." (Based on Likkutei Sichos vol 26, p. 160.)

DAILY DOSE: Finding Perfection

B"H

Finding Perfection
==================

You have to begin with the knowledge
that there is nothing perfect in this world.

Our job is not to hunt down perfection and live within it.
It is to take whatever broken pieces we have found
and sew them together as best we can.

—the Rebbe's response to a girl who wanted to leave her school for what she thought to be a better one.
