Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Start on sukkah

It is customary to begin working on -- or at least planning -- the construction of the sukkah immediately after Yom Kippur. Indeed, The Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 30:7) describes the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot as a time when the Jewish people are "preoccupied with mitzvot... this one is occupied with his sukkah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E0E2CAE3AA5783DFF4B912BAC94DB2D4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], this one is occupied with his lulav [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8ABFA0E58052D1D18B3BB46332FB5A8D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]..."

· "G-d's Name"

According to an old Chassidic tradition -- mentioned in the writings of the Baal Shem Tov -- the day after Yom Kippur is referred to as "G-d's Name." (The Baal Shem Tov explains that each of the various divine names describe G-d's involvement in a specific "world" or realm of reality, but the designation "G-d's Name" -- without reference to any particular name -- connotes a divine effluence that transcends all realms and particulars. On Yom Kippur, we access and reveal the very essence of our soul [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1EBD888CAE356FC109BFA35A55B29085&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], which is one with the very essence of G-d; thus the day after Yom Kippur carries the designation "G-d's Name.")

Yom Kippur

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Yom Kippur Observances

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year -- the day on which we are closest to G-d and to the quintessential core of our own souls. It is the "Day of Atonement" -- "For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before G-d" (Leviticus 16:30).

For twenty-six hours, from several minutes before sunset on Tishrei 9 to after nightfall on Tishrei 10, we "afflict our souls": we abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather shoes, and abstain from marital relations.

When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, the Yom Kippur service included the High Priest's entry into the "Holy of Holies" to offer the ketoret -- the only time that anyone entered the Temple's innermost chamber -- and the "casting of lots" over two goats, one to be offered to G-d and the other to carry off the sins of Israel to the wilderness. Today, we spend the day in the synagogue garbed in a white garment called a kittel to resemble the sin-free angels and to waken thoughts of repentance by reminding us of the day of our death. In the course of the day we hold five prayer services: Maariv, with its solemn Kol Nidrei service, on the eve of Yom Kippur; Shacharit; Musaf, which includes a detailed account of the Temple service; Minchah, which includes the reading of the Book of Jonah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=596B1946EA1D2A2CA94BCE3AFD22036F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]; and Ne'illah, the "closing of the gates" service at sunset. We say the Al Chet confession of sins ten times, and recite Psalms every available moment.

The day is the most solemn of the year, yet an undertone of joy suffuses it: a joy that revels in the spirituality of the day and expresses the confidence that G-d will accept our repentance, forgive our sins, and seal our verdict for a year of life, health and happiness. When the closing Ne'illah service climaxes in the resounding cries of "Hear O Israel... G-d is one" and a single blast [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C3B670E2EF8725666469DAC62C229C8C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] of the shofar, the joy erupts in song and dance (a Chabad custom is to sing the lively niggun known as "Napoleon's March"), followed by the festive after-fast meal, making the evening following Yom Kippur a Yom Tov (festival) in its own right.

· Ten Days of Repentance

The 10-day period beginning on Rosh Hashahnah and ending on Yom Kippur is known as the "Ten Days of Repentance"; this is the period, say the sages, of which the prophet speaks when he proclaims (Isaiah 55:6) "Seek G-d when He is to be found; call on Him when He is near." Psalm 130, Avinu Malkeinu and other special inserts and additions are included in our daily prayers during these days.

On Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms. Click below for the break-down of the Psalms.

· Sanctification of the Moon

Once a month, as the moon waxes in the sky, we recite a special blessing called Kiddush Levanah, "the sanctification of the moon," praising the Creator for His wondrous work we call astronomy.

Kiddush Levanah is recited after nightfall, usually on Saturday night. The blessing is concluded with songs and dancing, because our nation is likened to the moonâ€"as it waxes and wanes, so have we throughout history. When we bless the moon, we renew our trust that very soon, the light of Gâ€'d's presence will fill all the earth and our people will be redeemed from exile.

Though Kiddush Levanah can be recited as early as three days after the moon's rebirth, the kabbalah tells us it is best to wait a full week, till the seventh of the month. When sanctifying the moon of the month of Tishrei, it is customary to wait till the night after Yom Kippur.

Once 15 days have passed, the moon begins to wane once more and the season for saying the blessing has passed.

DAILY DOSE: Progressive Failure

B"H

Progressive Failure
===================

There are two ways to ascend: You can step upward, leaving one foot in its place as the other moves ahead. Or you can crouch down and leap.

This is the true meaning of failure: Failure is not just a setback. Everything in life is a step forward, because everything has meaning.

So too, failure: It is the crouch before the jump, the break away from the past so that we can leap into the future.

Erev Yom Kippur

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Kaparot

In the early morning hours of the day preceding Yom Kippur, the Kaparot ("Atonement") ceremony is performed. We take a live chicken (a rooster for a male and a hen for a female) and, circling it three times above our heads, we declare: "This is my replacement, this is my exchange, this is my atonement; this fowl shall go to its death, and I shall go to a long, good and peaceful life." The fowl is then slaughtered in accordance with halachic procedure, at which time we contemplate that this is a fate we ourselves would deserve, G-d forbid, for our failings and iniquities. The value of the fowl is given to the poor, and its meat eaten in the Yom Kippur meal; some give the fowl itself to the poor. (A alternate custom is to perform the rite only with money, reciting the prescribed verses and giving the money to charity. Kaparot can also be performed in the preceding days, during the "Ten Days of Repentance").

· Festive Meals

The day before Yom Kippur is a Yom Tov, a festive day; for although we stand prepared to be judged in the supernal courtroom for our deeds of the passed year, we are confident that G-d is a merciful judge, and will decree a year of life, health and prosperity for us. Two festive meals are eaten -- one at midday and the other before the fast, which begins at sunset. The Talmud states that "Whoever eats and drinks on the 9th [of Tishrei], it is regarded as if he had fasted on both the 9th and the 10th."

In many communities it is customary to eat kreplach on the day before Yom Kippur. Kreplach are small squares of rolled pasta dough filled with ground meat and folded into triangles. They can be boiled and served in soup or fried and served as a side dish. The meat symbolizes severity, the dough is an allusion to kindness. In preparation for the Day of Judgment we "cover" the severity with kindness. · Mikveh

Both men and women immerse in a mikveh [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6BE8C2F48391434D8FF2273E850B5D0D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (ritual pool) to attain an extra measure of sanctity before the holy day.

· Lekach (honey cake)

It is customary to ask for and receive lekach (sweet cake -- signifying a sweet year) from someone (usually one's mentor or parent) on this day. One of the reasons given for this custom is that if it had been decreed, G-d forbid, that during the year we should need to resort to a handout from others, the decree should be satisfied with this asking for food. The Lubavitcher Rebbe adds a deeper insight: "asking for lekach" on the eve of Yom Kippur instills in us the recognition that all the sustenance we receive throughout the year, including that which we supposedly "earn" by our own powers and endeavors, is in truth a gift from Above, granted in response to our daily requests from "He who nourishes the entire world with in His goodness, with grace, with benevolence and with compassion."

· Additional customs

Additional eve of Yom Kippur customs include receiving symbolic malkut ("lashings") as atonment for one's transgressions, reciting the "Al Chet" confession of sins after minchah and at sunset, and lighting a 26-hour candle that would burn for the duration of Yom Kippur.

· Yom Kippur fast begins at sunset

Yom Kippur [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8B23B61ADD03636DEA3DBA88E9E0E9D7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("Day of Atonement"), the holiest day of the year, begins this evening at sunset. Its most basic observance is the fast [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3864A9DC052B692CF51A2EBBA637A3B0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] that begins at sunset and ends tomorrow evening at nightfall (a total of approximately 26 hours), during which we abstain from food and drink in fulfillment of the biblical command (Leviticus 16:29; see also "Festive Meals [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0174DE2B027AC03BCF992E2DF4172548&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" above).

· Kol Nidrei

The first of the five Yom Kippur prayer services [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=37781FADB0325EC2923777A7F3EE663F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], which begins with the solemn Kol Nidrei prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=61271675244BA8F22F841255CCDF5C9F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], is recited in the synogogue tonight at sunset, at the onset of the holy day.

Daily Quote
===========

The special quality of the Minchah (afternoon) prayer over the Shacharit (morning) and Maariv (evening) prayers is that it comes in the middle of the day, when people are occupied and busy with their personal affairs, yet they interrupt to pray Minchah. So this prayer is especially beloved to G-d.

The Rebbe and the Lonely Man

B"H

The Rebbe Arranges a Visitor for a Lonely Man
By Dovid Zaklikowski
=============================================

Rabbi Shalom Ber Lipshitz arrived in New York on a Thursday after a long flight from Israel with plans to continue on to Canada immediately. Rabbi Lipshitz, a Chabad-Lubavitch rabbi, headed an organization supporting Jewish educational institutions in the Land of Israel. He was travelling specifically to attend a fundraising event and hoped that spending the Sabbath with the locals would enable him to share his success stories in a more relaxed environment.

But the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, had other plans. Before he was able to leave for Canada, Rabbi Lipshitz was tracked down by the Rebbe's secretariat and given a direct mission from the Rebbe.

An old classmate of his was apparently feeling quite lonely and miserable and the Rebbe wanted Rabbi Lipshitz to stay in New York over the Sabbath, visit the man's home several times, and try to improve his mood.

Rabbi Lipshitz did not remember this classmate as much as the classmate seemed to remember him, and the request took him by surprise.

Although he had no prior experience with easing another's loneliness, he immediately agreed to the Rebbe's request, arranged a place to stay and purchased a new ticket for after the weekend.

True to his word, Rabbi Lipshitz visited the man several times over the Sabbath and tried to lift his spirits.

On Sunday the rabbi was summoned to a private audience with the Rebbe. The Rebbe emphasized the importance of what he had done and showered upon him many blessings for his self sacrifice.

Rabbi Lipshitz repeated this story many times, conveying how important it is for each of us to worry about even a single individual who is feeling down.

G-d's bank account

By the Grace of G-d
Erev Yom Kippur, 5772 * October 7, 2011

Dear Friend,

A few hours before the onset of Yom Kippur each year, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, would enter the synagogue for prayer, holding a bag of coins. The tables were covered with scores, perhaps hundreds, of charity plates, representing an array of causes, from food for the needy and assistance to poor brides, to schools and mitzvah campaigns and more.

Deliberately and methodically, despite his impossibly tight schedule, the Rebbe would place a coin into each plate, taking great care not to skip a single one. Each represented a community or an individual who needed help, materially or spiritually.

In his urgent desire to help each individual, the Rebbe did not consider even one of them to be insignificant.

* * * * * *

Emulating this extraordinary example, by digging deep into our own resources to fill the plates of others, we encourage G-d to throw open His bank account of abundant blessings to each of us, to be judged with mercy and compassion for a truly happy, healthy and sweet year. And G-d, we know, has plenty to give.

* * * * * *

At Chabad.org, where millions now turn to fill their plates with spiritual inspiration, Torah learning, or practical tools to enrich their Jewish experience, we try to do our part.

Year-round our rabbis, editors, programmers and designers work with extraordinary urgency and devotion, motivated by the constant awareness that at the other end of the screen is an individual - millions of individuals - who seek a lifeline.

Our team is able to fill those needs only thanks to wonderful, caring people like you who, recognizing the importance of this mission, happily partner with us to provide the necessary funding.

As Yom Kippur quickly nears, I ask you:

Please open up your heart wide and help us fill the plates of the Jewish People.

For the past couple of weeks we've been working to enlist 5,400 partners in time for Yom Kippur. So far more than 2,400 have joined.

Please dig deep into your personal reservoir of kindness and partner with us to help others!

Remember: For many who turn to us every day, we - you! - are their only Jewish lifeline.

May your charity partnership stand you in good stead as G-d opens His bank account real wide to grant you and yours all of the deepest of His blessings, for yourself, your family and the entire world, to have a Good and Sweet New Year.

On behalf of the amazing Chabad.org Team,

Sincerely,

Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I Ate Non-Kosher Food, Now What?

I Ate Non-Kosher Food, Now What?
By Aron Moss
=================================

Dear Rabbi,

I am so embarrassed; I don't know what to say.

Last week, I bought a tomato sauce that I thought was kosher [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3D9CB753CBCFB1CE914D7C432E13BAFE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. I always buy this brand, but this time it seems I chose a different flavor than usual. After cooking with it and feeding my family, I read the ingredients, and to my horror, the sauce wasn't kosher!

I will do whatever I need to make my kitchen kosher [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F6BFD5109D7DC47B1E4A66C10E23617A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] again. I know that can be fixed.

But what devastates me is that I ate it and fed it to my family. Is there anything I can do about it now?

Answer:

You have a rare opportunity before you, one that even the holiest people never have. You can transform that non-kosher food [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=AB38FE06CDC541B4CBBBC095455FFA29&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] into something positive. Here's how.

While every food has its nutritional value, certain foods have the capacity to provide us with spiritual nutrition too. This is kosher eating. The Torah allows us to eat certain foods, not because they are healthy for our body, but because they are healthy for our soul.

On the other hand, non-kosher foods block the connection between body and soul, deaden our perception of holiness and desensitize us from the world of spirit.

But there is a way that non-kosher food can elevate you. This can happen when the eating of non-kosher food itself stirs you toward spiritual growth. When you regret what you have done and resolve to be extra-cautious in the future, and when you commit to being more careful in your general observance of the dietary laws, reviewing the relevant laws, then you have made the non-kosher food a means for growth.

Since returning to G-d needs some action, resolve also to place some coins in a charity box (preferably affixed to the wall of the kitchen) before cooking, and refrain from some of your favorite foods for a few days—an exercise that helps one gain mastery over one's desire for physical pleasures. These actions and intentions will serve to transform what was a fall in spiritual observance—even an unintentional one—into a step towards a higher spiritual plane.

This creates an amazing turnaround. The item you ate actually made you more spiritual. The sin had the same impact usually reserved for the observance of a positive commandment: it made you closer to G-d.

This is the law of transformation. A dispute, when resolved, makes friends closer. An argument, when handled correctly, makes a marriage deeper. A mistake, when seen as a learning tool, makes you smarter. And a piece of ham, when you regret eating it, makes you more kosher.

You should never deliberately start an argument, and you should never choose to eat non-kosher food. But if it already happened, don't feel down. Make the turnaround and elevate it.

See How to Change the Past [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=ADA88BB91A03B2B3A656FAFC3826C6C9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] from the selection on the Jewish Take on Repentance ("teshuvah") [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E49530AF08993984780577A598AED9B0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].- To view this article on the Web, or to post a comment, please click here: http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=093D0D02C260AC5D5B8A0237F9840838&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2
