Sunday evening (September 30), Jews throughout the world will begin the nine-day long "time of our joy," encompassing the festivals of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We sit in the sukkah to celebrate the warm embrace of G-d's love and care for us, take the four kinds to celebrate our unity as a people, and participate in the nightly beit hashoeva festivities celebrating the power of song and dance -- to transform ourselves and our world for the better.

(Bran Symondson).

(Florentijn Hofman).

· Passing of Rebbe Maharash (1882)
Tishrei 13 is the yahrtzeit of the fourth Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch, Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn, known as "Maharash" (a Hebrew acronym for "our master Rabbi Shmuel").
Rabbi Shmuel was born in the town of Lubavitch on the 2nd of Iyar of the year 5594 from creation (1834). His father was the third Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1E0443785B5AA38B50E556BE4C4BB0F1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] of Lubavitch (1789-1866). Though the youngest of Rabbi Menachem Mendel's seven sons, Rabbi Shmuel was chosen to succeed his father as the leader of Chabad Chassidism in the movement's capitol, Lubavitch, at the latter's passing in 1866 (four of his brothers established branches of Chabad in other towns in White Russia and Ukraine).
In addition to authoring and delivering more than 1,000 maamarim (discourses) of Chassidic teaching, Rabbi Shmuel was extensively involved in Jewish communal affairs and traveled throughout Europe in order to generate pressure on the Czarist regime to halt its instigation of pogroms against the Jews of Russia. Rabbi Shmuel passed away at the age of 48 on Tishrei 13, 5643 (1882).

DAILY DOSE: Above as Below
B"H
Above as Below
==============
Looking at your world from Above, all is good.
Looking at your world from within, things don't always look so nice.
Until you connect your world from within to the world above. Then the goodness flows downward without distortion.
How do you make that connection? By clinging tightly above. By putting all your trust in G-d.

Editor's Note:
Dear friends,
Do your Sukkot dinner plans include steaming hot soup and thick cozy sweaters? Or would iced drinks better fit the bill? Will you be contending with chilly winds, or a heat wave? Perhaps buzzing bees and pesky mosquitoes will be among the (uninvited) guests in the sukkah where you will spend the coming holiday.
Wherever you live, "eating out" takes on a whole new meaning on Sukkot. Far from a five-star restaurant, or even the simple conveniences of our homes, we brave the elements and trade secure roofs for flimsy vegetation overhead.
This puts us one step closer to our Creator, in whom we have complete faith. We trade climate control for G‑d-controlled climate.
Long ago, our ancestors acted on this faith when they left the civilization of Egypt and began a forty-year journey into the wilderness. "So said the L‑rd: I remember to you the lovingkindness of your youth . . . your following Me in the desert, in a land not sown." (Jeremiah 2:2)
Relive history this year. Enjoy the delicious food and company of friends and family in the sukkah, and truly feel G‑d's loving care and protection surrounding you.

MITZVAH MINUTE: The Sukkah: The Holiday Hut

MITZVAH MINUTE
==============
The Sukkah: The Holiday Hut
Chabad.org Staff
===========================
What: A sukkah is a hut built to provide shade. That's why it must sit beneath the open sky—not under a patio deck or even the branches of a tree. The walls can be made of any material, as long as they are secure and don't flap about in the wind. The roof, however, (we call it s'chach), must be of unprocessed materials which have grown from the ground. Bamboo poles, thin wooden slats, and evergreen branches are popular choices. Just make sure to use enough s'chach so that the inside of your sukkah will have more shade than sunlight. Those living in the fast lane can buy a prefab sukkah and bamboo mats. Inquire at your local Judaica store, or click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=74345EA46891A11379DC2AA28CC2D29E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
How: For eight days, make the sukkah your official home. Don't panic: As long as you eat your meals there, you're okay. But try to include anything else that you would normally do in the house—like reading a book or talking with a friend. We sit in the sukkah from sundown on the 14th of Tishrei through nightfall of the 22nd of Tishrei.
It is a mitzvah to eat all meals in the sukkah (a "meal" is defined as more than two ounces of grains -- e.g. bread, cake, pasta). Some people have the custom of eating snacks in the sukkah as well. Before eating in the sukkah, the following blessing is recited:
Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to dwell in the sukkah.
This blessing is made when your meal or snack includes a grain-based food.
Raining? If it's really uncomfortable, there is no duty to sit there. Come back when the weather improves. Nevertheless, many chassidim will eat in the sukkah no matter the weather. It's too great and rare a mitzvah to squander...
It is particularly important to eat at least one k'zayit (approx. 1 oz.) of bread or challah on the first evening of the festival in the sukkah, between nightfall and midnight.
Who: This beautiful mitzvah is traditionally fulfilled by the whole family, though, as with all time-related mitzvot, the obligation to eat in the sukkah applies to men over the age of 13.
Why: The sukkah commemorates the Clouds of Glory which surrounded and protected our ancestors during the forty-year desert sojourn which followed the Egyptian Exodus. Our willingness to leave the security of our homes and spend eight days in a flimsy outdoor hut demonstrates our faith in G-d and His benevolence.

Never Demolish a Sukkah
By Yerachmiel Tilles
=======================
An epidemic raged through the town of Nadvorna as Sukkot was approaching, and the physicians warned the townsfolk to take all possible hygienic precautions for fear of contagion. The local judge, an unusually evil man, was told that Rebbe Mordechai of Nadvorna had just built a sukkah. He at once dispatched a messenger with a court order to demolish it forthwith, because it supposedly contravened the municipal health regulations. The Nadvorner Rebbe ignored the message.
Within minutes, a squad of police arrived at his doorstep to warn him of the consequences of his defiance. He replied: "I built my sukkah in order that it should stand, not in order that it should be demolished."
This time, the judge sent the tzadik a summons. When this too was ignored, the judge decided to descend on his victim himself. He ordered the tzadik in harsh terms to dismantle the sukkah immediately, and warned him of the severe punishment which any further disobedience would earn him. These threats and warnings did not shake the tzadik's equanimity in the slightest. He simply answered coolly in the same words that he had told the policemen - that he had built his sukkah in order that it should stand, not in order that it should be demolished.
The judge was incensed and was about to pour more vituperation upon the tzadik, whereupon the latter remarked, "I would like you to know that Rebbe Meir'l of Premishlan was my great-uncle."
The judge flew into a rage: "Who cares who your great-uncle was? Just demolish that thing, and that's all!"
The Nadvorner now repeated what he had just told the judge, and then asked him calmly to wait a moment; he wanted to tell him an interesting story.
The judge, taken by surprise, signified his assent with a brief nod, and Rabbi Mordechai began:
"Once there lived a priest who had ten sons, all of them as robust and strong as cedars. He owned a beautiful big park, full of trees that delighted G-d and man alike. One day he decided that he would add grace to this grove by planting a little flower garden next to it. So he uprooted some of his trees, and in their place he planted fragrant flowers. But no sooner had he finished this work than his sons fell ill, one after the other. First the oldest weakened and died, then the second, and so on, until the very youngest fell ill.
The priest was at his wit's end. He summoned the most expert doctors, and even consulted sorcerers, but to no avail. At this point several people advised him to make the journey to visit Rebbe Meir of Premishlan. Perhaps salvation might come through him, for he was reputed to be a holy man; there was no alternative open to him, and he was desperately eager to save the life of his last surviving son. So with a heavy heart he traveled to Premishlan. "Arriving there he told the holy man of all the trials that had befallen him - and that now even his last son was mortally ill, and no physician could cure him. Heaven alone could help him now.
"'You had a beautiful garden full of goodly trees,' Reb Meir told him, 'but because you wanted a flower garden as well, you chopped down the trees of G-d. And that is why He has now chopped down your trees, as the verse states, man is a tree of the field. But since you have already come here, and your time has not yet run out completely, I promise you now that your youngest son will be helped from Above, and will soon be cured.'
"The holy man then prayed that the Almighty heal the priest's son, in order that His Name be sanctified wherever people would hear of his story. This prayer was accepted, and the son grew to manhood.
"I want you to know," Rebbe Mordechai concluded his story to the judge, "that you are the son of that priest…So, tell me, now, is this the way you repay the kindness that my great-uncle showed you by saving your life?"
The judge fell at his feet, and wept. "True, true, I know it all!" he sobbed. "Forgive me, Rabbi, for what I've done to you. You can build even ten of those things - but only promise that you will forgive me!"
The promise was given, the chastened judge went his way, and the Rebbe of Nadvorna enjoyed his sukkah in peace.

Rabbi Mordechai of Nadvorna [?-15 Tishrei 1895], the great grandson of Rabbi Meir "The Great" of Premishlan, was orphaned early and raised by his uncle, the famous Rebbe Meir'l of Premishlan (see below). Chasidim from all over Rumania and Hungary would flock to receive his blessings. An extraordinarily large number of his descendents became Chasidic leaders and rebbes, including dozens in the world today. His teachings are collected in Gedulas Mordechai.

Never Demolish a Sukkah
By Yerachmiel Tilles
=======================

[?-29 Iyar 1850], (called Meir'l) lived in abject but patient poverty, yet exerted himself tirelessly for the needy and the suffering. His divine insight and his ready wit have become legendary. He wrote no works, but some of his teachings were collected and published by his chasidim after his death.- To view this article on the Web, or to post a comment, please click here: http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B0564C7BBCAE6FD1926D3BEEA39AA1AA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2
