Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Passing of Rosh (1327)

The life and influence of Rabbi Asher ben Yechiel, known by the acronym "Rosh", straddled the two great spheres of the Jewish diaspora of his time, the Ashkenazic (Franco-German) and the Sephardic (Spanish-Mediterranean) communities. Born approximately 1250 in Western Germany, Rabbi Asher studied under the famed Tosaphist Rabbi Meir of Rothenburg, fathered eight sons, and authored one of the earliest codifications of Jewish law. In mid-life he fled the persecutions of medieval Christian Europe, settling in Spain where Jews prospered materially and Jewish learning flourished in the Spanish Golden Age.

Though a penniless exile and newcomer, Rabbi Asher's genius and erudition quickly earned him a position of prestige and influence. In 1304 he was invited to to serve as the spiritual leader of the Jews of Toledo, where he established a Talmudic academy and transplanted the Ashkenazic Tosaphists' system of Talmudic interpretation and analysis. He also introduced the traditionalism and piety of the early Ashkenazic "Chassidim" (reversing the secularist trends in certain segments of Sephardic Jewry).

Rabbi Asher passed away in Toledo on Cheshvan 9 of the year 5088 from creation (1327 of the Common Era).

Sefirah (the Hebrew word for "counting") also means to illuminate and to rarify. The 49-day process of sefirat ha-omer, the counting of the days from Passover to Shavuot, is also the process of refining the 49 traits of one's heart so that they shine with the soul's G-dly light

- Rabbi DovBer, the Maggid of Mezeritch

DAILY DOSE: Noah and Abraham

B"H

Noah and Abraham
================

When G-d told Noah to build an ark before the world would be destroyed, Noah built an ark.

But when G-d told Abraham He was about to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah—cities corrupt and evil to the core—Abraham argued. He said, "Perhaps there are righteous people there! Will the Judge of All the Earth not do justice?"

Abraham felt a sense of ownership for the world in which he lived. If there was something wrong, it needed to be changed. Even if it had been decreed by the will of G-d.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Prayers for Rain

In the Land of Israel, prayers for rain (i.e., adding the words v'ten tal u'matar to the appropriate blessing in the Amidah prayer) commence on Cheshvan 7 (see "Today in Jewish History" above. Outside of the Holy Land, the date for the rain prayer is determined by the local needs. In the U.S., Europe, Russia and other northern countries, it is recited beginning on the 60th day after the autumnal equinox -- on December 4th or 5th.)

· Sanctification of the Moon

Once a month, as the moon waxes in the sky, we recite a special blessing called Kiddush Levanah, "the sanctification of the moon," praising the Creator for His wondrous work we call astronomy.

Kiddush Levanah is recited after nightfall, usually on Saturday night. The blessing is concluded with songs and dancing, because our nation is likened to the moonâ€"as it waxes and wanes, so have we throughout history. When we bless the moon, we renew our trust that very soon, the light of Gâ€'d's presence will fill all the earth and our people will be redeemed from exile.

Though Kiddush Levanah can be recited as early as three days after the moon's rebirth, the kabbalah tells us it is best to wait a full week, till the seventh of the month. Once 15 days have passed, the moon begins to wane once more and the season for saying the blessing has passed.

· Last Jew comes home (2nd Temple Era)

During the Second Temple Era (circa 230 BCE), Cheshvan 7 was the date on which the Jew most distant from the Holy Temple -- who resided on the banks of the Euphrates River, a 15-day journey's distance from Jerusalem -- arrived at his homestead upon returning from the Sukkot pilgrimage. All Jews would wait for this before beginning to pray for rain. Cheshvan 7 thus marked the return to everyday activities following the spirituality of the festival-rich month of Tishrei.

· Passing of R. Meir Shapiro (1933)

Passing of Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin, founder of the daily "page a day" regimen of Talmudic study known as Daf Yomi.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Life after Parents’ Death

Life after Parents' Death
By Tzvi Freeman
=========================

Dear Rabbi,

This past June, I lost my mother, and now both of my parents are gone. This was the first High Holy Days [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E0D5D054F524FBAE9ED291B414DA65EE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] without either one of them. Although I don't come from an active religious family, nevertheless I do feel a heavy burden of the heart.

What is the best way to cope with no longer having my parents?

Answer:

My condolences on the loss of both your parents. It's something for which none of us are ever prepared. There's a different feeling to life when you stand in this world without those who brought you here and placed you on your feet.

Yet the truth is, the parent never leaves the child. Life never truly ends.

Rather than thinking of death, loneliness and loss, think of it this way: Imagine that your parents have gone on a trip to a distant place, from where there are no phone calls, no Skype, no e-mail—yet nevertheless, they have their ways to communicate and to assist you from their vantage point above. And when your thoughts are with them, they are hearing that as well.

In many ways, your parents are of assistance to you, and you are to them. We have a tradition that the souls of deceased parents benefit greatly from whatever good deeds their children do in their memory, as the saying of our sages goes, "A parent brings a child into this world, but a child can bring a parent into the next world."

Any mitzvah you do [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=23D731E1E731EAB0708DC738132B9180&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is good, but here are some of the traditional ways for you to assist your parents' souls as they are in that world:

* Say kaddish for your parents, and the Yizkor memorial service [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0C762B33143059D5384965C2CFD295E0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] recited on several major Jewish holidays. Make sure to give charity in their name in the days following the Yizkor service (but not on the day of the holiday itself). All the info you need about kaddish is in our Kaddish Guide: Learn it. Say it. Understand it [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=99BCB0ACBC1177B2973BF1BC47CB8A3F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
* Study some Torah in their memory (especially the Mishnah).
* Make some sort of charitable contribution to a good cause in their names. You could donate books on Judaism to a school or synagogue, and put a sticker inside dedicating the book in your parents' memory. That way, anytime someone learns or prays from that book, it is to your parents' merit, and they live on in that merit.

Aside from all the above, here's my own personal advice: Write down anecdotes of your parents that stick out in your mind. If you have a close friend or family, share those anecdotes with them. By doing so, you not only keep their memory alive in this world, you begin to learn things from them that you may not have taken to heart while they were in this world with you. In a way, it is now more than ever that you start to really feel how they are your parents, and how much you have to learn from their lives and experiences.

You don't write where you live, but here is a directory of Jewish centers [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=213AEB86F0BC68EEC53D0528CDA20EE1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] to help you find a suitable place to say the kaddish prayer and a caring rabbi who can also provide some guidance.

Keep in touch. Don't be shy to write back any time.
