· Torah Sages Escape (c. 75 BCE)

In the year 91 BCE, Alexander Yannai of the Hasmonean family succeeded his brother Yehuda Aristoblus to the throne of Judea. Alexander Yannai was a Sadducee who virulently persecuted the Pharisees. At one point during his bloody reign, following a victory he scored on a battlefield, he invited all the Torah scholars for a celebratory feast. During this feast he was slighted by one of the guests, which led him to execute all the Torah scholars in attendance.

A few of the sages managed to escape to the town of Sulukus in Syria. There, too, they encountered anti-Semitic enemies who murdered many of the exiled sages. The handful of surviving Torah scholars went in to hiding, finding refuge in the home of an individual named Zevadai. On the night of the 17th of Adar they escaped the hostile city of Sulukus.

Eventually these surviving scholars revived Torah Judaism. The date they escaped the clutches of death was established as a day of celebration.

· Completion of Code of Jewish Law (1563)

Rabbi Yosef Caro [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=786AED7E451E8F1EAC08523D274BAADC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] completed the Shulchan Aruch, the Code of Jewish Law [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8E88BD5A913DEC2FAE6C352366A6C676&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. This concise codification of all Jewish law which is germane today was an extension of his Beit Yosef commentary (see entry for the 11th of Elul [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4C703BBDFDE3453F2B3E03F47A32D7D7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).

The Shulchan Aruch is divided in to four sections: Orach Chaim -- details the laws pertaining to daily life, lifecycle events, and holidays. Yoreh De'ah -- laws which a practicing rabbi must be proficient in, such as complex nuances of the kosher laws, laws of mikvah, and laws of slaughtering. Even Ha'ezer -- laws of marriage, divorce, reproduction, and the like. Choshen Mishpat -- monetary and judicial laws; required study for a member of a rabbinical court.

To this very day, the Shulchan Aruch serves as the primary halachic guide for Jewish life.

Sefirah (the Hebrew word for "counting") also means to illuminate and to rarify. The 49-day process of sefirat ha-omer, the counting of the days from Passover to Shavuot, is also the process of refining the 49 traits of one's heart so that they shine with the soul's G-dly light

- Rabbi DovBer, the Maggid of Mezeritch

· Rebuilding of Jerusalem Wall Begun (c. 41 CE)

Agrippa I, appointed by the Roman Emperor to rule over Judea, was pious and kind to his subjects. During his reign, the Jews began to prosper and live comfortably. The Sages of the time accorded him great respect.

Agrippa I started construction to repair, broaden and heighten the walls around Jerusalem. The Romans, wary of the Jews' rising prosperity, placed many obstacles in his way. Nonetheless, the wall was completed, though the finished product was not as magnificent as originally planned.

The 16th of Adar, the day when the construction commenced, was instituted to be a joyous day.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Shushan Purim

In cities that are surrounded by a wall dating from the days of Joshua (13th century BCE) -- a prominent example is the city of Jerusalem -- the festival of Purim is observed on the 15th of Adar (instead of the 14th), in commemoration of the fact that in the ancient walled city of Shushan, the first Purim was celebrated on this day (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=165A81BA0202ADCD8321E29CDD6C8969&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]").

(For an overview of the Purim observances and links to more information, see "Laws and Customs [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C17D187E8214FA90A4AAE71C7418E86B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Adar 14.)

· Purim Victory Celebrated in Shushan (356 BCE)

The battles fought between the Jews and their enemies, which took place on Adar 13 throughout the Persian empire (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5F93A01B5F2A49CECFBBDCA9D4C90E84&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for that date), continued for two days -- Adar 13 and 14 -- in the capital city of Shushan, where there were a greater number of Jew haters. Thus the victory celebrations in Shushan were held on the 15th of Adar, and the observance of the festival of Purim was instituted for that day in Shushan and all walled cities. (See Laws and Customs [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A9AE4D9074D3803605D13AF8C257D955&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] below).

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why Send “Mishloach Manot” Food Gifts Through a Messenger?

Why Send "Mishloach Manot" Food Gifts Through a Messenger?
By Yehuda Shurpin
===========================================================

Dear Rabbi,

I know that the word mishloach literally means "send," and I've been told that the correct way to give mishloach manot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8C19A8B684E2F15E0770591773FA5C0E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is actually through a messenger. Is this true? Can you explain the reason?

Answer:

You are certainly onto something here. Mishloach manot involves giving two food gifts to at least one person on the holiday of Purim [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2FB45DD96196AA760BAEC3103D488B13&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. The words used to describe the observance in the Scroll of Esther [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2340F5F0B21559EBBEB32CC917421576&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], "mishloach manot,[1]" translate as "sending portions."

"Sending" typically involves at least three people (the giver, the messenger, the receiver), as opposed to "giving," which only involves the giver and the receiver. Because of the specific wording in the verse, it is customary to send the food packages through a third party. The messenger can be just about anybody: a friend, a relative, a child.[2]

It may sound strange at first, but usually the person giving mishloach manot will ask any person nearby to hand the gift to the recipient. This would include a child who opens the door at the recipient's home, a friend going along to deliver the gifts, or one's own child.

When the gifts are given through a messenger, more people become involved in fulfilling the mitzvah and the miracle of Purim is publicized. This is the primary reason we use a third-party.[3] Alternatively, it is because it is considered a more respectful manner of giving the mishloach manot.[4] But even if one gives the mishloach manot directly to the recipient, the giver still fulfills the Purim observance.[5]

Conversely, there are some who actually consider it better to give the food packages directly to the recipient. This is because one of the reasons for mishloach manot is to increase friendship and community bonds. As such, it seems more appropriate to give the gifts directly.

According to this, the reason the term 'sending'is used (as opposed to 'giving') is to stress that although normally we consider it better to do a mitzvah, a ritual observance, by oneself, rather than appointing a messenger to do it, this does not apply to the sending of mishloach manot. Additionally, according to Jewish law, when one fulfills a mitzvah through a messenger, one must use a messenger who has the same obligation as the one who sends him/her. When it comes to mishloach manot, it does not matter who the messenger is; a child will suffice.[6]

Practically speaking, the prevailing custom is to try and send the mishloach manot through a messenger, but one definitely fulfills one's obligation even if he or she gives the gift directly to the recipient.

The Highest Happiness
=====================

True happiness is the highest form of self-sacrifice.
There, in that state, there is no sense of self
—not even awareness that you are happy.

True happiness is somewhere beyond "knowing."
Beyond self.

All the more so when you bring joy to others.

New Daily Study Opportunities

Dear Friend,

This past weekend, Jews all over the world began again the daily study of Maimonides. For those who would like to watch a daily video class of the "Daily Rambam" we have two brand new options:

1. Rabbi Yehoshua B. Gordon who has taught the daily Chumash and daily Tanya on Chabad.org / Jewish.TV has now begun teaching one chapter a day of the Rambam's Mishneh Torah.

http://www.chabad.org/multimedia/rabbigordon_cdo/t/r

2. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan has begun teaching the daily mitzvahs from Rambam's Sefer HaMitzvahs.

http://www.chabad.org/dailystudy/seferHamitzvos.asp?autovideo=true

Both classes have just started and are still in the introduction to their respective books.

General Overview:

The portion discusses the census of the Israelites, the washbasin of the Tabernacle, the anointing oils for the priests and kings, the incense offering, and the Sabbath. The Torah then relates the story of the Golden Calf, G‑d's anger at the Jewish nation, Moses successfully arguing for Divine forgiveness for the sin, the subsequent breaking of the tablets, and the giving of the second tablets.
