Today is: Shabbat, Cheshvan 11, 5773

=======================
Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Passing of Methuselah (1656 BCE)

Methuselah, the longest-lived human being of all time, died at the age of 969 years on the 11th of Cheshvan of the year 1656 from creation (2105 BCE) -- exactly seven days before the beginning of the Great Flood. Methuselah was Adam's great-great-great-great-great-grandson and Noah's grandfather.

· Passing of Rachel (1553 BCE)

The matriarch Rachel died in childbirth on the 11th of Cheshvan of the year 2208 from creation (1553 BCE) while giving birth to her second son, Benjamin.

Rachel was born in Aram (Mesopotamia) approximately 1585 BCE. Her father was Laban [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=661F5ABEDBDA7EDBD97921E952918061&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the brother of Jacob's mother, Rebecca. Jacob came to Laban's home in 1576 BCE, fleeing the wrath of his brother Esau. He fell in love with Rachel and worked for seven years tending Laban's sheep in return for her hand in marriage. But Laban deceived his nephew, and on the morning after the wedding Jacob discovered that he had married Rachel's elder sister, Leah. Laban agreed to give him Rachel as a wife as well in return for another seven years' labor.

Rachel was childless for many years, while her elder sister and rival gave birth to six sons and a daughter in succession. Finally, in 1562 BCE, she gave birth to Joseph. Nine years later, while Jacob and his family were on the road to Jacob's ancestral home in Hebron (after a 22-year absence), she gave birth to a second son, but died in childbirth. Jacob buried her by the roadside, in Bethlehem; there, "Rachel weeps over her children, for they are gone [in exile]" (Jeremiah 31:14). Her tomb has served as a place of prayer for Jews for more than 35 centuries.

· Passing of R. Nachum of Chernobyl (1797)

Rabbi Nachum of Chernobyl was a disciple of the second leader of the Chassidic movement, Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch, and the founder of the Chernobyl dynasty of Chassidic Rebbes.

The mandate of the whole of Creation is stated almost immediately. They translate it as "Let there be light." Instead, read, "It should become Light."

Meaning that all the world—even the darkness—should become a source of light and wisdom.

General Overview:

Abram and Sarai travel to Canaan. Due to a famine in the land they temporarily relocate to Egypt, where Pharaoh unsuccessfully attempts to add Sarai to his harem. They return to Canaan with great wealth and Abram parts with his nephew Lot. Abram defeats the armies of the four kings who had taken his nephew Lot hostage. G‑d seals a pact with Abram, bequeathing the lands of Canaan to his descendants. Childless Abram marries Hagar and she gives birth to Ishmael. G‑d changes Abram's name to Abraham, and Sarai becomes Sarah. Abraham is circumcised at the age of 99.

G-d did not choose Abraham. It was his inherent superiority, and the fact that he was ready to give everything up for the sake of G-d, that compelled G-d to choose him.

Why Do I Need to Learn to Read Hebrew?
By Yisroel Cotlar
======================================

Dear Rabbi,

I'm studying for my Bar Mitzvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D9DF23CC90A4B042019CACF3601C50EF&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and really need some motivation for learning to read Hebrew. I'd rather stick to English...why should I bother reading Hebrew? Besides, I don't really understand it.

Answer:

Just asking this question puts you ahead of the game! It's easy to simply do as you are told without stopping to think about the value of all the hard work you're putting in…

Imagine you were given a map that pointed to hundreds of pounds of gold buried somewhere near your house. There's only one catch. The map is written in another language. Would you take the time to learn how to read the map? Would the few weeks of hard work be worth an entire lifetime of wealth?

Have you thought about what it means to be a Jew? You have a direct connection to more than 3000 years of Judaism [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B577989F462890F6ABE4E00E337106ED&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]: Abraham [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=AA7A6C7A8C8B6CED72FDFDE5F86109AD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Sara [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7E544B7C590A3DED02F69F0113B718D2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Isaac [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2FE0B65AD088048C4423365A4819DA80&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Rebecca [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=BFA9574595D97919C649ADED5AA8128C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Jacob [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EB429991FE55F3A35BEBA032A9B40263&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Rachel [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CF8A1BDBC2BFC6C86C8C5CAA189B9221&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and Leah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=37DE286FB3B2177ED34BF4702FC58EA9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]; Moses [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C7B501F1BA18DC3664BF86A7B38DBEAC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Aaron [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=17E687227B71E5691CA17BDD88943E02&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], David [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=86B1FE5F76B3D85EF80CF025F4701342&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Deborah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=35776FADDD9C23E72F137981888AE31D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Solomon [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B45EE66F3AC78CB1433B83869FF1D600&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and Esther [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=126A473FB40B4014579013223A0C04A4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. You are their child. And you are now given the task of passing on the tradition to the next generation and carrying out the Jewish Mission in the world.

How long is a chain of 3000 years? By way of comparison:

The USA is 236 years old.

Baseball is about 170 years old.

Coca Cola is 127 years old.

Google is 13 years old.

Things come and go in the world. Empires fall, fads fade away, technology changes. It may be hard to picture, but things we can't imagine living without will eventually disappear.

But there's one thing that has always been here and will always be here: our Judaism.

It is our Torah that has held our nation together despite all the changes happening around us. Its teachings, traditions and commandments are studied and kept today as they were thousands of years ago. The Torah is an incredible family treasure that links you to the past and connects you to the future.

There's only one small challenge, the Torah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D768C2F1C22C60B802B622DC058EDECC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is in Hebrew. You have the map, but you need to understand it.

In order to access it properly you need to be able to read Hebrew, pray in Hebrew, and eventually work towards understanding it. Sure you can read a translation but it is never quite like reciting those same words our ancestors said, or studying from the same texts as our greatest sages. The connection you will feel is simply that much deeper.

Learning to read Hebrew is not as easy as taking a stroll, but I am sure with some effort, you will be successful. And in the long term it is well worth it!

Shacharit–Morning Prayers
Rise and Climb

=========================

The sun has risen; a new day beckons.

It's time to climb a ladder, to ascend to the heavenly spheres and fortify our sensitivity for G-d and spirituality. After this daily booster we descend, equipped to tackle the day and the struggles it will present.

This ladder is the morning prayers, shacharit, recited sometime between sunrise and midday (the earlier the better). The prayer lasts, on average, half an hour.

Shacharit is preceded by several pages of preliminary blessings and prayers. After this preamble, the ladder-climbing commences. Rung One:

Content: Hodu—a set of verses that praise the Almighty—and Psalms 30 and 67.
Theme: Simple acknowledgement of G-d as the Master of the Universe, and a commitment to obey His will. Rung Two:

Content: The "Verses of Praise," a series of Psalms (the bulk is Psalm 145–150), preceded by a blessing (Baruch She'amar) and followed by one (Yishtabach).
Theme: Awakening an emotional attachment to G-d through awareness of His awesome deeds. Rung Three:

Content: The Shema [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=675C6B555DA66A8A2036748ACD4D7C3F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], preceded by two blessings and followed by one.
Theme: Contemplating the workings of the supernal worlds and comprehension of G-d's greatness and oneness. Rung Four:

Content: The Amidah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=64519DBDB79762617D8310A38606A207&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
Theme: The Amidah is when one stands before G-d and addresses Him directly, asking for his needs. This closeness denotes complete oneness with G-d, a revelation of the intrinsic bond that connects us with the Creator, a bond that transcends emotion or intellect. This prayer is recited while standing at attention, and in an undertone. Climbing Down

The Amidah is followed by penitential prayers, a brief reading from the Torah scroll on Mondays and Thursdays (and some other festive days), the "Song of the Day," followed by the "Ein k'Elokeinu" and "Aleinu" hymns.

Notes:

* Adult males don tefillin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=42276079442A588BA49E7414894F54AF&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and tallit [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=729D2D84D05E318272D788C3C1A50258&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for the course of the prayer.
* When there are ten men, kaddish is recited several times during the prayer, and the prayer leader repeats the Amidah aloud while the rest answer "Amen."
* For special days (e.g., Shabbat [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D3827B4D1DE92E913F07390F26253D8D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], holidays, fast days), there are special variations. Certain prayers are added or omitted.
