Rosh Hashanah Day 1
======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· "Good Year"
On the first night of Rosh Hashanah, we extend to one another greetings of Leshana Tovah Tekatev Vitechatem, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year."
· Apple & Honey
In the evening meal, we eat apple dipped in honey, the head of a fish, pomogranates , tzimmes (sweet carrots) and other foods signifying a sweet and successful year
· Shofar
In the course of the morning and musaf service, the shofar (ram's horn) is sounded one hundred times, in various combinations of tekiah (a long blast), shevarim (a trio of broken sobs) and teruah (a staccato of short notes), in fulfillment of the primary mitzvah of Rosh Hashanah. The shofar serves to trumpet our coronation of G-d as King [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=208FCF4E9C893C06B92BB1264DEE294F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] of the Universe, as a call to repentance [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=63F4BDFB609CE2A72D46302B636B5F92&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and to evoke the memory of the Binding ofIsaac.

· Tashlich
In the afternoon, the Tashlich prayer service, in which we ask G-d to "cast away our sins in the depths of the sea", is recited at a body of water (sea, river, lake, pond, etc.) containing fish.
· Torah Reading
Genesis 21-22 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=632F5729D99E3793002E8D1EC0DB34AB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]

· Ten Days of Repentance
The 10-day period beginning on Rosh Hashahnah and ending on Yom Kippur is known as the "Ten Days of Repentance"; this is the period, say the sages, of which the prophet speaks when he proclaims (Isaiah 55:6) "Seek G-d when He is to be found; call on Him when He is near." Psalm 130, Avinu Malkeinu and other special inserts and additions are included in our daily prayers during these days.

Today in Jewish History
=======================
· Adam & Eve Created (3760 BCE)
On Tishrei 1 -- the sixth day of creation -- "G-d said: 'Let us make Man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth...'" (Genesis 1:26). "G-d formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (ibid., 2:7). "And G-d took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden, to work it and to keep it" (2:15). "And G-d said: 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helpmeet opposite him' ... G-d caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and He took one of his sides, and closed up the flesh in its place. And G-d built the side which He had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. And the man said: 'This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.' Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother, and cleaves to his wife; and they become one flesh" (2:18-24).

· First Sin & Repentance (3760 BCE)
On the very day he was created, man committed the first sin of history, transgressing the divine commandment not to eat from the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil." Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden, and mankind became subject to death, labor and moral confusion. But on that day the first man and woman also repented their sin, introducing the concept and opportunities of teshuvah ("return") into the human experience.

· Dove's 3rd Mission (2105 BCE)
On the 1st of Tishrei, on the 307th day of the Great Flood, Noach dispatched a dove from the ark, for the third time (see "On This Date" for Elul 17 and Elul 23). When the dove did not return, Noah knew that the Flood's waters had completely drained from the earth. On that day, Noach removed the roof of the ark; but Noah and his family, and all the animals, remained in the ark for another 57 days -- until the 27th of Cheshvan -- when the suface of the earth was completely dry and G-d commanded them to leave the ark and resettle and reppopulate the earth.

· Binding of Isaac; Sarah's Passing (1677 BCE)
Abraham's supreme test of faith -- his binding of Isaac in preparation to sacrifice him as per G-d's command -- occurred on the 1st of Tishrei of the year 2084 from creation (1677 BCE), and is recalled each Rosh Hashanah with the sounding of the shofar (ram's horn -- a ram was sacrificed in Isaac's stead when an angel revealed that the command to sacrifice Isaac was but a divine test); the Torah's account [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=35DD1293DB7F688A136B3C3C6F38D7CF&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] of the event is publicly read in the synagogue on the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah. On the day of Isaac's binding, his mother, Sarah, passed away at age 127, and was subsequently buried in the Machpelah Cave in Hebron [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DCA529CA5013A53D6DECA5EC3B980EA9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Baal Shem Tov's vision of Moshiach (1746)
In a letter to his brother-in-law, Rabbi Gershon Kitover, the Baal Shem Tov relates: "On Rosh Hashanah of the year 5507 [from creation] I made an 'ascent of soul' in the manner known to you... I ascended level after level until I reached the chamber of Moshiach [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0BE2191EF92909DB145E90D3C280A791&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]... And I asked Moshiach: "When will the Master come?" And he replied: "When your teachings will be disseminated and revealed in the world, and your wellsprings will spread to the outside..." (Keter Shem Tov 1:1).

· Daf Yomi (1923)
The "Daf Yomi" daily regimen of Talmud study (in which the participant studies one folio a day to complete the entire Talmud in seven years) initiated by Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin, was launched on Rosh Hashanah of 1923.

Erev Rosh Hashanah
======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Selichot
Today is the last day of the Jewish year, and a day of preparation for Rosh Hashanah ("Head of the Year") which commences this evening.
A more lengthy version of the Selichot ("supplication") prayers [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=91ACB45C9666097E1E25B279F6B213FB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] are recited in the early morning hours, before the morning prayers.
· No Shofar Today
The Shofar is not sounded on the day before Rosh Hashanah, to separate between the shofar soundings of the month of Elul (which are a minhag, or "custom") and the Rosh Hashanah soundings, which are a biblically ordained mitzvah, divine commandment).
· Annulment of Vows
Following the morning services, Hatarat Nedarim, the annulment of vows, is performed (the text for this procedure is found in most prayer books).
· Visiting the Cemetery
It is customary visit the the graves of the righteous on this day and pray there, as the resting place of a righteous person is an oppertune place to beseech the Almighty.
· Rosh Hashanah Begins Tonight
The festival of Rosh Hashanah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D72730713F0B6DA51B8536058E285BCC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], marking the start of a new Jewish year, begins this evening at sunset.
Upon the conclusion of the evening prayers in the synagogue, we extend to one another greetings of Leshana Tovah Tekatev Vitechatem, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." In the evening meal, we eat apple dipped in honey, the head of a fish, pomogranates , tzimmes (sweet carrots) and other foods signifying a sweet and successful year.
See Laws & Customs [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=26905FBF76F33726DFB77D1DCFF65DD9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for tomorrow, Tishrei 1.
· Elul Observances
As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionaly a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DF6A0584F603FC1B5F701BD45A9E00B6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3C3DE37D71676386A201292EB1AF53F3&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("return" to G-d), prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9BC67664C9CBC7AA511F0A1C85347DF0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], charity [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6A18E0D4593FEDEE931AE6AEEC141579&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and increased Ahavat Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A90A09A0D6E7DD4081BFE865E14A4FFD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=88EC474950676F1E6CC8D5A83C8E3CEC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."
Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C23A5ED0AEC1A9E55294230D917E9091&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=65E0BDBDBCFBC100D5B719BB8A0C1E2C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). The third Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn of Lubavitch (1789-1866), was born on the 29th of Elul. Orphaned from his mother at age 3, he was raised by his maternal grandfather, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=88EC474950676F1E6CC8D5A83C8E3CEC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. Rabbi Menachem Mendel assumed the leadership of Chabad in 1827, upon the passing of his father-in-law and uncle, Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch. Extremely active in communal affairs, he established and funded Jewish farming colonies which provided a livelihood for thousands of families. He also stood at the forefront of the battle against the "Enlightenment Movement" which, with the support of the Czarist regime, sought to destroy traditional Jewish life -- a battle which earned him no less than 22 (!) imprisonments and arrests. In the course of his lifetime, Rabbi Menachem Mendel penned more than 48,000 pages of Chassidic teachings and Halachic exegesis. He is known as the "Tzemach Tzeddek" ("a sprouting of righteousness") after his work of Halachic responsa by that name.

Erev Rosh Hashanah
======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7D7BA9CD57EE010724ACF78B81D7CCD7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and mezuzot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E45A5B5664DDC994055A1825876A6CC9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

We need your help this Rosh Hashanah!
By the Grace of G-d
Dear Friend,
While left and right feverishly debate the presidential candidates, an 'election' affecting the very existence of our universe is only hours away!
Our Sages teach that before we sound the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah the world actually stands in precarious balance -- until G-d decides to accept us again as His subjects.
So on Rosh Hashanah (beginning this evening, Sunday, September 16) we gather in our synagogues to elect G-d as King of the Universe, beseeching Him also to shower His blessings upon us for a good and sweet New Year.
To properly prepare, we reflect solemnly upon our past and resolve to do better; we joyously increase our performance of mitzvos; and we conscientiously help others do the same.
At Chabad.org we are redoubling our efforts to help more people than ever enjoy Judaism's priceless treasures. More than 1.7 million unique users access Chabad.org monthly for priceless knowledge, essential life tools and communal connection. But our work has barely begun!
We have exciting plans to expand the scope and reach of our programs and to offer a whole new range of learning opportunities for young and old, scholar and layperson, beginner and advanced user alike.
Chabad.org is on the cusp of disseminating Torah and Judaism on a scale never seen before in 3,300 years of Jewish history!
We cannot, however, achieve any of this on our own! Please partner with us in this global educational outreach project. Please join us in demonstrating to the Almighty just how deeply His people care about the material and spiritual wellbeing of their brethren.
Please reach down deep and extend whatever support you can - and then some - for this sacred partnership, thereby helping effect the most glorious election of all time!
The payoff is immeasurable: Helping countless Jews across the globe deepen their relationship with their Judaism; and bringing a whole new level of peace, stability, sanctity and purpose to the human condition as a whole. Surely the merit for such a mitzvah is incalculable!
It is our goal to enlist the participation of 5,400 partners during this High Holiday season, and I'd like to ask you to please become one of them.
Please click here to make your secure, tax-deductible contribution to Chabad.org, thereby casting your vote for a Divinely-consecrated, Torah-enriched and mitzvah-saturated Year 5773:

======================
As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=454B032F1ED0C5D7146BB9FA51152E3C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=658009C3CC4CAC453466B5F4943E26D8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("return" to G-d), prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5635894BED4A9D5EF2869625A8EAD00B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], charity [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=25A4657A3518EC49F45831601E0083F6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and increased Ahavat Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=08335904F15F6CEE1C168DF86D7C1E27&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5BF714AFB954A83A916C0C5E021FBD6D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."
Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7C19FD5AE00D89C2012D20EA6EFDE6FD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=69C4B75F17EAD974FD57EAEB34E9BD9A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=66462830399978FCBB94BCBC05E3055D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and mezuzot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5709567BF300A9C2D8EDFC2D60C3E929&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================
Chapter 82 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4BB14876A90266D0170BC9B8FA2064A3&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] Chapter 83 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1798897520F8D1F20C7C70743030F26A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] Chapter 84 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4C72D01EF69C9E272AEB27B12B8AFCA2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]
