Today is: Sunday, Nissan 23, 5772
Omer: Day Eight - Chessed sheb'Gevurah

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· "Sefirah" Mourning Practices

In remembrance of the tragic death of Rabbi Akiva's disciples who died in a plague in the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, several mourning practices are observed during this period: no marriages are conducted during this time, and like mourners, we don't cut our hair or enjoy the sound of music. Customs vary as to the proscribed activities and the dates during which the mourning is observed; consult your rabbi as to the traditions followed by your community.

· Count "Nine Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the ninth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is nine days, which are one week and two days, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0EA1B07F5BF10BCD0075F0E327A43528&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Gevurah sheb'Gevurah -- "Restraint in Restraint"

The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

· Isru Chag

The day following a festival is called Isru Chag ("tied to the festival"). Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted.

· Second Crusade Mourned by Cologne Jews (1147)

The Jewish community of Cologne, Germany, designated the 23rd of Nissan as a day of fasting and mourning to commemorate the Jews of Cologne massacred in 1147 during the Second Crusade.

Daily Quote
===========

"I will make your descendents like the dust of the earth" (Genesis 13:17). As the dust of the earth is everywhere, so, too, will the people of Israel be scattered from one end of the world to the other. As dust is treaded upon by all, so, too, will Israel be treaded upon by all. As dust erodes all metals while it itself lasts forever, so is it with Israel: all nations disintegrate, while they persist.

- Midrash Rabbah

DAILY DOSE: Meditation Through a Sea of Reeds

B"H

Meditation Through a Sea of Reeds
=================================

Accept the world at its face value and it won't let you move forward.
Every impulse must be bridled, every step carefully balanced
—and even then, for every step forward, you fall back two.
You are enslaved within an Egypt of your own making.

Here is your route of escape:

Meditate deeply upon the inner soul of the world;
struggle to see the vision described by our teachers.
Part the murky waters of a coarse, material world;
enter the reality that lies beneath it;
let that be your path from bondage.

Grasp that inner vision and it will flow outward
through the heart to the conscious self,
down to the heel that steps upon the earth,
until all these, as well, become mind.

Your eyes are now open,
your heart is awake,
your hands themselves know what to grab and what to avoid,
as your feet know where to walk.

In the struggle for deeper vision,
life becomes effortless.

You are free.

· Torah Reading

On the Eighth Day of Passover we read Deuteronomy 15:19-16:17. Like the reading for the second day, it catalogs the annual cycle of festivals, their special observances, and the offerings brought on these occasions to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

The Eighth Day's special connection with the Future Redemption [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9B67DB029CF8776B72FACCCEEF2528F8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is reflected in the Haftorah (reading from the Prophets) for this day--Isaiah 10:32-12:6 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=818D90CBAAA6D5988EE5A69BA0015099&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Yizkor

Yizkor, the remembrance prayer for departed parents, is recited today after the morning reading of the Torah.

· Moshiach's Meal

The last day of Passover ("Acharon Shel Pesach") is particularly associated with Moshiach [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=69AF1832A87715CF29F9696F450490B0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and the future redemption. The Haftarah (reading from the Prophets) for this day is from Isaiah 11, which describes the promised future era of universal peace and divine perfection. Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=28C87C3A3B22B4CC881DCB7CFDD13113&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of partaking of a "Moshiach's meal" on the afternoon of the last day of Passover; in addition to the matzah eaten at "Moshiach's meal", the Rebbes of Chabad added the custom of drinking four cups of wine, as in the seder held on Passover's first days.

· Count "Eight Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the eighth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is eight days, which are one week and one day, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=028631D1B821AC5128D2CD6EDCD77BA5&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Chessed sheb'Gevurah -- "Kindness in Restraint"

· Isaac Circumcised (1713 BCE)

Eight days following his birth on the 15th of Nissan (see Jewish history [ 272530 ] for that day), Isaac was circumcised; becoming the very first child to enter the covenant with G-d on the eighth day following his birth.

This performance was repeated for seven days. On the seventh day, the walls of the city collapsed. (see Jewish History for the 28th of Nissan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3E873F0FB5DE1C9C455E69582E25ED58&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Torah Reading

On the Seventh Day of Passover we read how on this day the sea split [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D7A76DA590D2447B138CBE135C73DB1B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for the Children of Israel and drowned the pursuing Egyptians, and the "Song at the Sea" sung by the people upon their deliverance (Exodus 13:17-15:26 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5F924E72732E64C6BDF1FC45FCC3C679&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]; full summary with commentary here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B1F217E4EFA3B0128F5C221FDB30427F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).

· Partial Hallel

Unlike all the other festivals, only the abridged version of Hallel (Psalms 113-118, recited on special occasions in praise and thanksgiving to G-d) is said on the latter days of Passover. The reason for this is based on the Midrash which relates that when the Egyptians were drowning in the sea, the angels in heaven desired to sing; but G-d said to them: "The work of My hands [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7622E27B768C89C3066BF98E41DE41ED&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is drowning in the sea, and you wish to sing?"

· Count "Seven Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the seventh day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is seven days, which are one week, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8273B1DCB3A0607E2B587FA17669BC53&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Malchut sheb'Chessed -- "Receptiveness in Kindness"

· Moses Departs Midian (1314 BCE)

After seven days of contention with G-d at the burning bush (see entry [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5808F31190514F1F386451563F4AD0A7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for "Nissan 15"), Moses assumed the mission of taking the Children of Israel out of Egypt. Taking leave of his father-in-law, Jethro, he placed his wife and children on a donkey [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0BE7144BA5140E87A74E11C7603AE701&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and set out for Egypt to demand of Pharaoh, "Let My people go!"

· Red Sea Splits (1313 BCE)

G-d commanded Moses: "Speak to the Children of Israel, that they should move forward!"

Nachshon ben Aminadav of the tribe of Judah was the first to jump into the sea; the water split, and "the children of Israel walked across on the dry land in the midst of the sea [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C0D8A1005C59E776B5BF99A3C4E89A6F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]." Today is: Thursday, Nissan 20, 5772
Passover (Chol Hamoed) * Omer: Day Five - Hod sheb'Chessed

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Passover Torah Readings

Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6D6413C7AFFEB224CC327AB0CBFF7CBB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for a summary of the Passover Torah readings.

· Chol Hamoed

Of the eight days of Passover, the first two and the last two are "yom tov" (festival days). The middle four days are called chol hamoed--"weekdays of the festival," also called "the intermediate days." (In Israel, where Passover is observed for seven days, the first and last days are yom tov, and the middle five days are chol hamoed).

The yom tov days are days of rest, during which all creative work [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0D0831ED0C24370A352473CB2A82469F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is forbidden, as it is on the Shabbat, with the exception of certain types of work associated with food preparation (e.g., cooking and "carrying"). On chol hamoed the prohibition of work is less stringent--work whose avoidance would result in "significant loss" is permitted (except when chol hamoed is also Shabbat, when all work is forbidden).

The "Yaale V'yavo" prayer is included in all prayers and Grace After Meals. Hallel (partial) and Musaf are recited following the Shacharit (morning) prayers. It is the Chabad custom not to put on tefillin during the "intermediate days".

· Eruv Tavshilin

When Shabbat occurs immediately following a festival -- as it does this year -- an "eruv tavshilin" (i.e., food for at least one "meal" that is set aside in advance for Shabbat) must be prepared prior to the festival, so that it should be permitted to prepare food for Shabbat during the festival.

For more on Eruv Tavshilin and how it is made click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3EE55EDD9F3BA4E687AA2AB54182E05E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]

· Count "Six Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the sixth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is six days to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing.)

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=89CD66801C25459F98B03D9D1E431028&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Yesod sheb'Chessed -- "Connection in Kindness"

· Night of Learning

It is customary to remain awake on the eve of the Seventh of Passover (i.e., tonight) and spend the entire night in Torah study and joyous celebration of the great miracle of the splitting of the sea.

· Pharaoh Corners Jews at Red Sea (1313 BCE)

Pharaoh's pursuit of the Jews (see Jewish History for the 18th of Nissan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6A35EC36DEDCC44ECF6D6BD0C4CBA48D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) ended on this day, on the shores of the Red Sea.

A terrified Jewish nation divides into several factions. Some advocated mass suicide, others wanted to surrender and return to Egypt, the bolder ones prepared to battle the Egyptians, while others advised the nation to pray.

G-d thought otherwise. He instructed the Jews to simply proceed onwards -- despite the sea which stood in their path.

The Jews complied, and the entire following night they went through the parted waters of the Red Sea (see Jewish History for the 21st of Nissan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C8D1E120D5A55928530F7BA105A9E1FE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ])
