Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Elul Observances
As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionaly a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=613044685A6E22BD02EA740B1370F161&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=53F3F09E908E95DE317FC20FB427CDCC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("return" to G-d), prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=18C8771460D9509B65C595EAFD226480&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], charity [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8C861516A313B6A744772311C145247C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and increased Ahavat Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C552B46C1C90CD3C31604C98ED16C2FD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3D0C6B0340BAB985848814421959806D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."
Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A86DB2D2E0B72598F7812FF8629964B1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F0553C1439DECA02644B36EEE64CA7F8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Daily Quote
===========
Truth is the middle path. An inclination to the right, to be overly stringent with oneself and find faults or sins not in accord with the truth, or an inclination to the left, to be overly indulgent, covering one's faults or being lenient in demands of G-d's service out of self-love -- both these ways are false
- Rabbi Sholom DovBer of Lubavitch (1860-1920)

(Paul Chiappe)
(Anna Barlow)
(Matei Apostolescu)
(Fabio D'Altilia)

Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Selichot
The series of Selichot ("supplication") prayers [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EBF01D3F93CB6E887E4A35EC85F9339E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] recited in preparation for the "Days of Awe" of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur begin this Saturday night, after midnight (after the Ashkenazic custom; the Sephardic community begins on the 1st of Elul). On subsequent days, the custom is to recite the Selichot in the early morning hours, before the morning prayers, each morning up to and including Elul 29, the eve of Rosh Hashanah.

As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B7AD1721F3958A36223B28D1E322CF8C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EE297C8C4F49DF93030DBC77B0B45727&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("return" to G-d), prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=66FFFA914A8C49A0CDCD912DF3499BAB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], charity [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EF291458104E29F857A69699ED2F8590&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and increased Ahavat Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=427196E8ED0649E9A6DFAD49BDC2C98B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=61A7B159A39EB9F9C59F8ED1B9E2931D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."
Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B174A722D0A98CB1116867A52F5A21B0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1C3317663FE1308F45EB00493E0D9E3A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EFBD1E71A07FD61291FC1B41485EAD90&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and mezuzot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9D979680BD007C474B5E83FA9E9BCA36&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

Traditions of the Future
========================
We do not keep our traditions for the sake of the past but for their power to create a future, a power that will never end.
For the Torah was not given to this world so that it should return to its former glory, but so that it will transcend itself.

DAILY DOSE: Life’s Memories
B"H
Life's Memories
===============
This experience, to give life, to watch it grow, to be torn apart by it, to receive pleasure from it and to give life again—for this the soul descended from its ethereal heights.
And when it shall return to there, enveloped in these memories, it will finally know their depth. And with them travel ever higher and higher.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Elul Observances
As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionaly a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4A6E4C61F13059496DD751CBAB000FE3&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=ED650CCEE30FB93DD217EDF5479B8372&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0244FA76083FAB57E5D33E5BC636156C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("return" to G-d), prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9B051FD54364427DC0DA611A110AC239&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], charity [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CE42A8C19EAD4894489E800A61ABDA48&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and increased Ahavat Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=51A1C6D8513E0EB792F4B2FC80F1D870&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0309A58DFADDE7DC6C44DD1254043687&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."
Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8AB1BBB877CF65E38E3540AC129FBAFB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8F35AA8F40C241E0CC0DD2E09788AB73&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1E0871267BBC4A339793D8E8462AA2D0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and mezuzot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C8CD50A3190513EC541DDAA769CAF15F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================
General Overview:
The Israelites are commanded to bring the first of their fruit to the Temple, and to deliver all tithes to their proper recipients. Moses explains how the blessings and curses are to be proclaimed on Mts. Grizzim and Ebal when the Jewish nation enters into Israel. He then details the blessings they will receive for following the commandments of the Torah, and the calamities which will result from disregarding them.
