· Passover Torah Readings

· V'Ten Berachah (tonight)

In the evening prayers tonight, we begin substituting the phrase v'ten berachah... ("and grant blessing....") in place of the winter version of the blessing ("and grant dew and rain for blessing"), in the ninth blessing of the Amidah. This, in conjunction with the similar change enacted in the second blessing on the first day of Passover [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=89BD416FBE2BB6B30A31D6EB2ED11231&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Count "Two Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the second day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is two days to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9982863EF682CE4ADE237D7135F71349&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Gevurah sheb'Chessed -- "Restraint in Kindness"

The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

· Sodom Overturned (1714 BCE)

The wicked cities of the Sodom valley, including Sodom, Gemorrah, Admah and Zevoim, were overtuned in punishment of their sins. Only Lot, his wife and two daughters were saved. Lot's wife, however, turned into a pillar of salt [ ef= ] when she failed to heed the Divine warning not to look back at the burning cities.

· Manna Ends (1273 BCE)

On the 16th of Nissan of the year 2488 from creation (1273 BCE), six days after the Children of Israel entered the Holy Land under the leadership of Joshua [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4F958B3026F33F10F19063225D09277D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], their remaining supply of the miraculous "bread from heaven," which had sustained them since shortly after their exodus from Egypt 40 years earlier, ran out. (The manna had ceased falling on the previous Adar 7, the day of Moses' passing.) After bringing the "Omer" offering (see "Counting of the Omer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=62DE27AABD9D21FDF0F9FAE9B3CB8A99&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" in Laws & Customs for yesterday, Nissan 15) at the Sanctuary they erected at Gilgal, the people prepared their (unleavened) bread for the first time from the produce of the land.

· Esther Appears Before Achashverosh (357 BCE)

On the 3rd day of the fast proclaimed by Mordechai at her behest (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=516037108506ACA27D2F1BD1301E262A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Nissan 13), Queen Esther appeared unsummoned before King Achashverosh--a capital offence. The king, however, extended the royal sceptre to her, signifying his consent that she approach him. Esther requested that Achashverosh attend a private wine party with her and Haman (according to one opinion in the Talmud, her plan was to make Achashverosh jealous of her apparent friendship with Haman so that he would kill them both, thus saving the Jewish people from Haman's decree).

· Haman Hanged (357 BCE)

At the 2nd wine party she made for King Achashverosh and Haman, Queen Esther revealed her identity to the king and began to plead for her people, pointing to Haman as the evil schemer plotting to destroy them. When Charvonah, a royal servant, mentioned the gallows which Haman had prepared for Mordechai, the king ordered that Haman be hanged on them, opening the door for the Jews' salvation from Haman's decree (Book of Esther [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DA93C9F16F35DE6508CEF42FFC6AF552&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], chapter 7).

DAILY DOSE: Where the Self Lives

B"H

Where the Self Lives
====================

Over the years, you build an awareness of self: who you are, what you like and dislike, how you feel about things. This is the mind of da'at—a place of consciousness, of knowing and feeling "I exist." It is the most visceral of minds, closely linked to the emotions.

Consciousness is not evil. The problem is the way a human enters into his consciousness and identifies with it. What is actually only an awareness of self becomes your actual self. This is the act of self-imprisonment, as you become trapped in a tight cell of self-definition.

The path of inner Torah leads you to reach beyond this conscious state to an essential self that is one with the Infinite. This is the act of liberation from a personal Egypt, which Torah makes possible on a daily basis.

Passover - 1st Day (2nd Seder tonight)

Today's Laws & Customs

· Passover Torah Readings

· Prayer for Dew ('Tal')

The month of Nissan marks the ends of the "season of rains" in the Holy Land. Beginning with the Mussaf prayer of the 1st day of Passover, we omit the passage in our prayers praising G-d's greatness as a provider of rain (Mashiv haruach umorid hageshem), substituting it with the words Morid hatal ("Who brings down dew").

· Begin Omer Count Tonight

"And you shall count for yourselves from the morrow of the Shabbat, from the day on which you bring the Omer offering, seven complete weeks they shall be; until the morrow of the seventh week, you shall count fifty days..." (Leviticus 23:15)

The "morrow of the Shabbat" referred to in this verse is the 16th of Nissan--the 2nd day of Passover, which begins tonight at nightfall. On this day, the "Omer Offering"--which included matzahs baked from the new crop of barley harvested that very day--was brought in the Holy Temple. (No grain from new harvest was allowed to be eaten before the Omer offering was brought.) Thus 16th of Nissan also commences the 49-day "Counting of the Omer", which retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer. The 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3C402D779DED3C8B6FC77D119D9D4349&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai. Tonight we count: "Today is one day to the Omer."

Tonight's Sefirah: Chessed sheb'Chessed -- "Kindness in Kindness"

· "Covenant Between the Parts" (1743 BCE)

On the 15th of Nissan of the year 2018 from creation (1743 BCE) G-d forged a special covenant with Abraham in which the destiny of the Jewish people was foretold: the Holy Land was bequeathed to them as their eternal heritage, but first they would have to experience galut--exile and persecution. "And He said to Abram: 'Know surely that your descendents shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will be enslaved to them, and they will afflict them four hundred years... and afterwards they shall come out with great wealth.' And when the sun went down and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a burning torch which passed between those pieces... On that day G-d made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'To your seed I have given these land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates'" (Genesis 15:13-18).

· Abraham Battles Four Kings (1738 BCE?)

When Lot was taken captive by the four kings who conquered the "five cities of the plain" (Sodom, Gomorra, Admah, Zevoim and Zoar), Abraham, aided only by a small band of loyal servants, went to battle to rescue his his nephew; "the night divided [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0515960BE88B6EDFB2CD6E7E592B9EC8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for them, for him and his servants, and they defeated them, pursuing them to Hovah, which is to the left of Damascus... And he recovered all the property; also his kinsman, Lot, and his property were recovered, and also the women and the people" (Genesis 14:15-16).

· Angels Visit Abraham (1714 BCE)

On the 3rd day following his circumcision at age 99 (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F14ED0FD2196D4D78CD0D02CB98A665B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Nissan 13) three angels visited Abraham: Rephael healed him, and Michael informed Abraham and Sarah that, in exactly one year, a son will be born to them. (The third angel, Gabriel, proceeded to Sodom to destroy the wicked city).

· Isaac Born (1713 BCE)

"G-d remembered Sarah as He had said; and G-d did to Sarah as He had spoken. And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which G-d had spoken to him... Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born to him. And Sarah declared: 'G-d has made laughter for me, so that all that hear will laugh ('yitzchak') with me'" (Genesis 21:1-6).

· Jacob Wrestles with Esau's Angel (1556 BCE)

"And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. When he saw that he could not prevail against him, he touched the socket of his hip, and the socket of Jacob's hip became dislocated as he wrestled with him. And he (the angel) said, 'Let me go, for dawn is breaking,' but he (Jacob) said, 'I will not let you go unless you have blessed me.' So he said to him, 'What is your name?' and he said, 'Jacob.' And he said, 'Your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for you have contended with G-d and with men, and have prevailed'" (Genesis 32:25-29). It was the eve of Nissan 15.

The next morning, Jacob confronted Esau in the flesh. Esau, who had come with a band of armed men with the intention to kill his brother, "ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept". Esau invited Jacob to join him in his mountain kingdom of Se'ir, but Jacob replied, "Please, let my lord go on ahead before his servant; and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle that goes before me and the children, until I come to my lord to Se'ir" -- a promise yet to be fulfilled (ibid., 33:4-14).

· Moses at Burning Bush (1314 BCE)

On the 15th of Nissan of the year 2447 from creation (1314 BCE) -- exactly one year before the Exodus -- Moses was shepherding the flocks of his father-in-law, Jethro, at the foot of Mount Sinai, when G-d appeared to him in a "thornbush that burned with fire, but was not consumed" and instructed him to return to Egypt, come before Pharaoh, and demand in the name of G-d: "Let My people go, so that they may serve Me." For seven days and seven nights Moses argued with G-d, pleading that he is the wrong person for the job, before accepting the mission to redeem the people of Israel and bring them to Sinai.

· The Exodus (1313 BCE)

At the stroke of midnight of Nissan 15 of the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE), 210 years after Jacob settled in Egypt and 430 years after the "Covenant Between the Parts [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5C042586770C963C37B9B501CBDC9129&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]," G-d visited the last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians, killing all their firstborn. Earlier that evening, the Children of Israel conducted the first "seder" of history, eating the roasted meat of the Passover offering with matzot and bitter herbs, and sprinkling the blood of the sacrifice on their doorposts as a sign that G-d will "pass over" their homes when inflicting the plague upon the Egyptians. Pharaoh's resistance to free them was broken, and he virtually chased his former slaves out of the land. Several million souls--600,000 adult males, plus the woman and children, and a large "mixed multitude" of non-Hebrews who joined them -- left Egypt on that day, and began the 50-day trek to Sinai and their birth as G-d's chosen people.

When Vashti refused this obscene request, the king had her executed.

Her ignominious death on Shabbat was divine retribution for her penchant to force Jewish girls to work on Shabbat, and paved the way for Esther to become queen and save the Jewish nation from Haman's plot.

· Daniel in Lions' Den (372 BCE)

Daniel was cast into a den of hungry lions by Darius I of Persia for violating a royal edict that no man may pray to any god save the king for 30 days. Miraculously, the lions did not touch him, and he emerged from the den unscathed (Daniel 6:5-29).

Today is: Friday, Nissan 14, 5772
Erev Pesach ('Eve of Passover') - First Seder tonight

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Fast of the Firstborn

Firstborn males over the age of Bar Mitzvah (13) are obligated to fast on the 14th of Nissan, in recognition of the fact that during the "Plague of the Firstborn" (which occurred at midnight of Nissan 15) G-d "passed over" the Jewish firstborn when He killed all firstborn Egyptians. If there is a firstborn male in the family under 13, the obligation to fast rests with the father. The prevailing custom, however, is for the firstborn to exempt themselves from the obligation to fast by participating in a seudat mitzvah (a meal marking the fulfillment of a mitzvah), such as a siyyum--a festive meal celebrating the conclusion of the study of a section of Torah).

· Chametz Eating Deadline

The Torah (Exodus 12:15, as per Talmud, Pesachim 5a) sets midday of Nissan 14--today--as the deadline for the destruction and/or removal of all leavened foods ("chametz") from our possession in preparation for the festival of Passover, which begins this evening at nightfall. In practice, Torah law mandates that we desist from eating chametz two hours before midday, and that no leaven remain in our possession an hour before midday. These are not clock hours but "proportional hours", defined by Jewish law as a 12th part of the time between sunrise and sunset.

Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=374087120E9CE912EDE7CA9816248C0B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for the chametz eating deadline for your location.

From this point until the end of the festival of Passover, it is forbidden to eat leaven, or anything containing even the slightest trace of leaven.

· Burn and Nullify Chametz

· Passover Offering

When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, the Passover offering was brought there on the afternoon of Nissan 14. Today it is commemorated by our recitation of the "Order of the Passover Offering" this afternoon, by the "shankbone" placed on the seder plate this evening, and the afikoman -- a portion of matzah eaten in its stead at the end of the seder meal.

· Passover Seder Tonight

The 8-day festival of Passover--also called "The Festival of Matzahs" and "The Time of Our Freedom"--begins tonight at nightfall.

In the evening, we conduct a seder ("order") -- a 15-part ritualistic feast that encompasses the observances of the Passover festival: telling our children the story of the Exodus as described and expounded in the Haggadah; eating the matzah (unleavened bread), the bitter herbs dipped in charoset, and the afikoman (an additional portion of matzah eaten as "dessert" in commemoration of the Passover offering); drinking the four cups of wine; and numerous other symbolic foods and rituals commemorating both our slavery in Egypt and our liberation on this night.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Would We Still Be Slaves in Egypt?

Would We Still Be Slaves in Egypt?
By Yisroel Cotlar
==================================

Dear Rabbi,

I read in the Passover [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3021CEA874C6A2FA7013A52232CCCAF0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] Haggadah reader [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=BF956CEDD88622FCE2CD74DEC14CEE83&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] that had G-d not taken us out of Egypt thousands of years ago, we would still be slaves today.

Do we really believe that? A lot has happened since then. Kings have been overthrown, countries have changed hands and peoples have dispersed. Perhaps it would have taken hundreds, maybe even thousands of years, but sooner or later, wasn't our slavery bound to end?

Answer:

That's a good question. The answer depends on how you define leaving Egypt.

You see, there were two aspects to the exodus from Egypt:

* The physical/geographical departure.
* The mental/psychological redemption.

There is a cliché I often hear that actually describes the dual nature of the exodus: It's one thing for the Jews to leave Egypt. It's another thing for Egypt to leave the Jews.

The Jewish nation was redeemed from Egypt at the last possible moment. Had they stayed just a little bit longer, it would have been "game over." The hundreds of years of slavery had taken their toll, steeping them in a slave mentality. The Israelites had reached a spiritual nadir, and were becoming more like Egyptians than like their ancestors, Abraham [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6333C9C0BA32E97486FE8D6243CA6F1E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and Sarah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=918E763B227F1717A26AB48DE6F41C29&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

Would they have eventually left Egypt? Who knows. Perhaps they would have become entirely assimilated with the Egyptians. Maybe not. But even if they had left Egypt at a later time, they would not have become a nation with their own distinct Jewish identity.

Take, for example, the black population of Mauritania, in western Africa. Many years after slavery was outlawed in their country and the slaves were freed, slavery still had not left their psyche. As one of them told a New York Times reporter in 1997, eighteen years after slavery was abolished, "Just as G-d created a camel to be a camel, He created me to be a slave."

For the Jews to leave slavery—both physical slavery and their internal self-definition that kept them enslaved—they needed to leave Egypt not one moment later than they did. And for that, they needed to leave with a supernatural intervention. If the redemption would have come about naturally, they might have willingly returned to Egypt and the identity they knew as slaves. In fact, even with their miraculous transformation from slaves to a free people, some still complained to Moses, "Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?"[1]

It took a direct revelation of G-dliness to instantly transform slaves into a free people, an act for which we thank G-d to this very day.[2]

How you can create a Passover miracle. Please read.

By the Grace of G-d

Nissan 13, 5772 . April 5, 2012

Dear Friend,

With the Passover (or Pesach) seder only hours away - please let's talk about miracles for a moment.

Passover is replete with miracles. From our very first introduction to Moses all the way through the Splitting of the Sea, the holiday is one endless display of G-d's miraculous intervention in our lives.

Indeed, it is from the crucible of colossal, unmistakable miracles that our People came into being.

The very fact that we are here today to recount that story - while oppressive nations far mightier than us have come and gone - is indication of G-d's miraculous intervention throughout history.

Some of the most meaningful miracles are those we perform ourselves. When we reach beyond our natural tendencies to act more G-dly, when we break through our usual boundaries to help someone else - above and beyond our comfort zone - these are our very own minor (and sometimes major) miracles.

At Chabad.org we are privileged to celebrate these miracles by the thousands. The emails so many of you send to us tell heart-rending tales of challenge - along with heroic strength and caring! Every day we are moved anew by the story of yet another Jew who had no idea of his or her heritage until stumbling upon Chabad.org. And of someone in need who we were, thank G-d, able to help.

Our own daily existence here at the website is rife with "little" miracles - performed by you. Our annual budget is covered almost completely by people like yourself! One miraculous day after another, one miraculous new feature after another; they're all propelled and energized by your partnership with us.

So, with your permission, I'd like to ask you today to join us in pulling off a collaborative miracle. Let us join together to put this extraordinary learning and living tool called Chabad.org on even stronger financial footing.

If every recipient of this email would reach miraculously deep into his or her pockets, to give beyond our innate comfort zones, Chabad.org will be able to miraculously nurture and implant many more miracles into your life and the lives of those around you.

Please join us and contribute generously to help millions (yes, millions!) of people, from every strata of society and from every part of the globe, to experience life more meaningfully via this labor of love called Chabad.org.
