· Sanctification of the Moon

Once a month, as the moon waxes in the sky, we recite a special blessing called Kiddush Levanah, "the sanctification of the moon," praising the Creator for His wondrous work we call astronomy.

Kiddush Levanah is recited after nightfall, usually on Saturday night. The blessing is concluded with songs and dancing, because our nation is likened to the moonâ€"as it waxes and wanes, so have we throughout history. When we bless the moon, we renew our trust that very soon, the light of Gâ€'d's presence will fill all the earth and our people will be redeemed from exile.

Though Kiddush Levanah can be recited as early as three days after the moon's rebirth, the kabbalah tells us it is best to wait a full week, till the seventh of the month. Once 15 days have passed, the moon begins to wane once more and the season for saying the blessing has passed.

· Ger Tzedek of Vilna Burned at the Stake (1749)

Avraham ben Avraham, the famed "Ger Tzedek" (Righteous Convert) of Vilna, was born as Valentin Potozki, the son of Count Potocki, one of the richest landowners in Poland. As a student in Vilna he discovered Judaism and decided to convert -- a capital offense in most countries in Christian Europe at the time. He fled to Amsterdam where he secretly converted to Judaism, assuming the name Avraham ben Avraham ("Abraham the son of Abraham").

Years later he returned to Vilna, where he was eventually recognized as the missing son of Count Potocki and arrested by the church. He refused to renounce his faith and was sentenced to death. He was burned at the stake in Vilna on the 2nd day of Shavuot of 1749.

DAILY DOSE: Knowing That Which You May Know

B"H

Knowing That Which You May Know
===============================

A creature born without parents can never know what it means to cry for his father and mother.

A being with no sense of the transcendental can never know what is G-d and what is G-dly.

The words, the explanations, we hear them through our minds, but they speak to our souls.

For the soul already knows.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Torah Reading: Ten Commandments

The Torah reading for the 1st day of Shavuot is from Exodus 19-20, which recounts the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=07758C679ADDE5C496FBA1DF66506F02&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]") and includes the "Ten Commandments" proclaimed at Sinai that encapsulate the entire Torah.

· Children in Shul

The Lubavitcher Rebbe urged that all children -- including infants --should be brought to the synagogue on the 1st day of Shavuot to hear the reading of the Ten Commandments [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E2192BC4165729C281D488A313C22743&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] in re-enactment of the Giving of the Torah at Sinai. Our sages relate that when G-d came to give the Torah to the people of Israel, He asked for a guarantee that that they will not forsake it. "The heaven and the earth shall be our guarantors," said the Jews, but G-d replied that "they will not last forever." "Our fathers will guarantee it," said the people, but G-d said that "they are busy." It was only when we promised that "our children will guarantee it" that G-d agreed, "These are excellent guarantors."

· Book of Ruth

It is the custom in many communities to read the biblical Book of Ruth, which tells the story of Ruth, a Moabite princess--and ancestress of King David [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=237469CCF6264A198F311AB721327AB2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]--who converted to Judaism.

· Giving of the Torah (1313 BCE)

On the 6th Sivan of the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE), seven weeks after the Exodus, G-d revealed Himself on Mount Sinai. The entire people of Israel (600,000 heads of households and their families), as well as the souls of all future generations of Jews, heard G-d declare the first two of the Ten Commandments [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8B4CCD71A759A26E347E0C20258938B0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and witnessed G-d's communication of the other eight through Moses. Following the revelation, Moses ascended the mountain for 40 days, to receive the remainder of the Torah from G-d.

At Sinai, G-d rescinded [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FFE8D58967C3F139E2125F37D3D92077&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] the "decree" and "divide" (gezeirah) that had been in force since the 2nd day of creation separating the spiritual and the physical into two hermetic worlds; from this point on, "the higher realms could descend into the lower realms, and the lower could ascend to the higher." Thus was born the "mitzvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8DB283D223C0B59497C00599F32D24E6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" -- a physical deed that, by virtue of the fact that it is commanded by G-d, brings G-dliness into the physical world.

· Passing of King David (837 BCE)

David, a descendent of Judah the son of Jacob as well as of Ruth, a Moabite convert to Judaism, was anointed King of Israel by Samuel in 878 BCE. All future legitimate kings of Israel were David's descendents, as will be Moshiach [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E64AFDBF3825116C900EE9E4BDFE697F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (the messiah), who will "restore the kingdom of David to its glory of old."

David fought many wars, defeating Israel's enemies and securing and expanding its borders. He conquered Jerusalem [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=42E520CCC35F7537AB89A1F7D5274643&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], purchased the Temple Mount [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=90BB84D152949FC304A6BCAEEE5C6965&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] from its Yebusite owner, and prepared the foundation for the Holy Temple [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3F0AC264DD96384F0E26B44F3985EC2D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (which was built by his son, King Solomon). David served as the head of the Sanhedrin and the foremost Torah authority of his generation; he is also the "sweet singer of Israel" who composed the Book of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=74AD4732C97EB6F3DB1FBD4A61FF7D36&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] that for 28 centuries has embodied the joys, sorrows and yearnings of the Jewish people.

King David passed away on the 6th of Sivan of the year 837 BCE, age 70.

· Cologne Jews Martyred (1096)

During the first crusade (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E1EE42720313D2570DF2E142884640EE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Iyar 8), the Jews of Cologne, Germany chose to be killed rather than convert to Christianity. This was the case, during the first crusades, for many of the Jews who were given the choice between being killed or being baptized. Most of those who converted continued to practice Judaism in secrecy and, one year later, were permitted by Henry IV to openly return to Judaism.

· Passing of R. Israel Baal Shem Tov (1760)

In 1734, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov ("BeSHT", 1698-1760), who up until that time had lived as a hidden tzaddik [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=50E86E522160D3652604F9CC1A0896A8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], began to publicly disseminate his teachings. While adding nothing "new" to Judaism, he re-emphasized truths and doctrines that had been buried under the hardships of exile: the immense love that G-d has for every Jew, the cosmic significance of every mitzvah a person performs, the divine meaningfulness that resides in every blade of grass, in every event, and in every thought in the universe. He spoke to the downtrodden masses and to the aloof scholars, giving meaning to their existence, and thus joy, and thus life. Many disciples came to imbibe the "inner soul" of Torah from him, and the new movement came to be known as "Chassidism [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A1987D73064AF54C3FB7A7F94F138356&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]."

Rabbi Israel passed away on the 6th of Sivan of 1760, and was succeeded (one year later, on the first anniversary of his passing) by his disciple, Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B047FB288ED1C367AFA725F67F1CDC07&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

Today is: Shabbat, Sivan 5, 5772
Omer: Day 49 - Malchut sheb'Malchut

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Ethics of the Fathers: Chapter 6

In preparation for the festival of Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=793668F7726F5AA280AD00546F8236E5&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], we study one of the six chapters of the Talmud's Ethics of the Fathers ("Avot") on the afternoon of each of the six Shabbatot between Passover and Shavuot; this Shabbat being the Shabbat before Shhavuot, we study Chapter Six. (In many communities -- and such is the Chabad custom -- the study cycle is repeated through the summer, until the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah.)

· All-Night Learning

The Talmud relates that when G-d came to give the Torah to the People of Israel in the early morning of Sivan 6 (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=757AA74A71DACF6B30FAC25984FCFC5C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for tomorrow), He found them sleeping. (The Chassidic masters explain that this was an attempt to connect to their subconscious, transcendent self in preparation for their reception of the divine wisdom.) To rectify this lapse, we spend the entire first night of Shavuot (which begins at nightfall tonight) studying Torah. The traditional Tikkun Leil Shavout ("Rectification for Shavuot Night") study program includes the opening and closing verses of each book of the Written Torah (Tanach), as well as of each Parshah; the entire Book of Ruth (see "Laws and Customs [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=284857375EE0543CF76574A946BA944D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for tomorrow); the opening and closing sections of each tractate of the Talmud; a list of the 613 mitzvot; and selected readings from the Zohar and other Kabbalistic works.

· Reuben Finds Mandrakes (1568 BCE)

The incident involving the mandrakes (dudaim) which Reuben, the eldest son of Jacob, found in the field "during the time of the wheat harvest"--recounted in Genesis 30:14-18 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=67E8419D1FB7000D85EB4BF54C793536&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]--occurred on the fifth of Sivan of the year 2197 from creation (1568 BCE).

· Jews Accept Torah (1313 BCE)

On this day, Moses made a covenant with the Jewish people at the foot of Mount Sinai at which the people declared, "All that G-d has spoken, we shall do and hear" (Exodus 24:7) committing themselves to observe the Torah's commandments ("do") and strive to comprehend them ("hear"), while pledging to "do" also before they "hear."

Today is: Friday, Sivan 4, 5772
Omer: Day 48 - Yesod sheb'Malchut

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Count "Forty-Nine Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the forty-ninth -- and last -- day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is forty-nine days, which are seven weeks, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C7A51172D77CB14D2927B849BD266618&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai which commences tomorrow at nightfall.

Tonight's Sefirah: Malchut sheb'Malchut -- "Receptiveness in Receptiveness" (also: "Sovreignty in Sovereignty")

The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

· Moses Transcribes (first part of) Torah (1313 BCE)

On Sivan 4 of the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE)--two days before the revelation at Mount Sinai--Moses wrote down the first 68 chapters of the Torah, from Genesis 1:1 ("In the Beginning G-d created the heavens and the earth") to the Giving of the Torah in Exodus 19 (Exodus 24:4; Rashi ibid.).

· Forced Conversion in Clermont (576)

A mob, accompanied by the bishop of Clermont-Ferrand, France, razed the local synagogue to the ground. The bishop then informed the Jews that he, as bishop, could have but one flock, and unless they were willing to embrace Christianity, they must leave the city. Five hundred Jews were forced to be baptized and the remainder fled to Marseilles.

· Jews Returned to Spain (1481)

Pope Sixtus IV instructed his local bishops that all Jews who had fled the Spanish Inquisition (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1B2079184F7EF0D9DCF637785682F8F1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Adar 7) should be sent back to Spain.

· Chmielnitzki Massacres (1648)

The Cossack rebellion against Polish rule in Ukraine, under the leadership of Bogdan Chmielnitzki (may his name be blotted out) began on the 4th of Sivan of the year 5408 from creation (1648 CE). In their bloody march through the Ukraine, Volhynia, Podolia, Poland proper and Lithuania, Chmielnitzki's peasant army massacred between 100,000 and 300,000 Jews. Three hundred Jewish communities were destroyed.

Does the Baby Feel Excruciating Pain During the Circumcision?
The traditional Jewish brit milah, the clamp and the baby
By Levi Y Heber
=============================================================

Hi Rabbi,

It's the night before my son's circumcision [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=91C87C9B12BC65954A79AF4960C38B26&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and I cannot sleep. I know my child is not the first to be circumcised, but I am worried about the lack of anesthesia. Will he feel much pain? Will he be traumatized?

Answer:

I can relate to your worries. It is normal for a mother to worry! In fact, I would be quite disconcerted if you were not worried about your newborn's health and wellbeing.

Perhaps you can take comfort in the knowledge that circumcision, known as brit milah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=91C87C9B12BC65954A79AF4960C38B26&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], has been performed in this manner for over 3700 years, and that it is incumbent upon the mohel [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1D062B38F12138A584DB8CA0BDBF5710&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the expert Jewish circumciser [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1D062B38F12138A584DB8CA0BDBF5710&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], to perform the procedure in a way that will minimize your son's pain and discomfort. The Traditional Circumcision

When the mohel performs the circumcision he makes a swift motion with an izmel – a traditional scalpel used for brit milah – which is intended to minimize the pain and discomfort.

Those who stand close to the mohel will notice that the infant usually starts to cry as soon as the diaper is opened, and stops crying as soon as it's closed. In fact, during the newborn stage, many infants cry anytime they are changed or bathed. The cry is not necessarily pain-related. Typically the infant is calm as the blessings are made over a cup of wine and his Jewish name is announced.

It's interesting to note that the traditional circumcision is performed on the eighth day of the child's life when his clotting factor has fully developed, which is optimal for healing. At the same time, the nerve endings are not completely developed which lessens the infant's discomfort.

The traditional brit milah does not involve anesthesia, as we do not want to cause the possibility of additional complications. Ansthesia can also have negative side effects in such young children.

All said, the brit milah is performed at the healthiest time, using the best method, and it has been documented that complications from a traditional circumcision are extremely rare.[1] The Painful Way

Hospital and non-traditional circumcisions often involve use of a clamp. This method is extremely painful and traumatic to the child as the clamp actually crushes the skin tissue prior to severing it. This painful method is prohibited by Jewish law and does not fulfill the Biblical requirement of circumcision.

The FDA has also issued a warning in regards to using a clamp for circumcision as it can lead to laceration, hemorrhage, penile amputation, or urethral damage. The Eternal Covenant

Think about the importance of the brit milah which has been observed faithfully for thousands of years, ever since our forefather Abraham circumcised [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E7C4064ED7945D2FD53BBC277D47286F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] himself at the age of 99.

I am sure when the circumcision is over, and you hold your dear son, you will realize the discomfort is short lived but the results are forever: your child will have entered an eternal covenant with G-d.

Mazal Tov! May we share only joyous occasions!
