Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Moses Ascends to the Top of Mount Sinai (1313 BCE)

"Moses went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain...for six days. On the seventh day G-d called to Moses from within the cloud... And Moses came within the cloud, and he went up to the top of the mountain, and Moses was upon the mountain forty days and forty nights" (Exodus 24:15-18).

On the morrow of the giving of the Ten Commandments (see Jewish History for the 6th of Sivan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0AE6FCD91BCF5265073A37D57EDF3B32&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), Moses [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9110AC3DD19E52283A499CABD641614D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ascended Mount Sinai in order to receive from G-d the remainder of the Torah -- the remaining commandments and the Oral Law [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3AE7EEDCBCA15F5A366600F3CFFA796C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. After being "cleansed" by the cloud for six days, he was ushered into the presence of G-d on the 13th of Sivan.

· Bombing in Cairo Jewish Quarter (1948)

Following the War of Independence (see Jewish History for the 6th of Iyar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FCC10A331E9C97EC541CDC511DB1FB07&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), citizens in many Arab countries began harassing their Jewish co-citizens, often times inflicting casualties and substantial property damage.

The 5,000 Jews living in Cairo, Egypt were also repeatedly victimized. On the 13th of Sivan a bomb exploded in the Jewish quarter of Cairo, murdering 22 Jews and wounding more than 40 others.

The systematic persecution caused most Egyptian Jews to flee, many choosing to move to Israel. Today, there are virtually no Jews remaining in Egypt.

Today is: Shabbat, Sivan 12, 5772

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· End of Shavuot "fulfillment" days

When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, and all Jews would come there for the three annual "pilgrimage festivals" (Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot), Sivan 12 was the last of the seven days allotted for the offerings brought in conjunction with the Shavuot pilgrimage (unlike the festivals of Passover and Sukkot, which have seven biblically mandated days, Shavuot consists only of one day; hence the additional six days of tashlumin or "fulfillment").

Thus we do not recite the tachnun (confession and penitential suplication), and the other prayers omitted on a festival or joyous commemoration, from the 1st of Sivan until and including the 12th, as all these days bear a connection with the festival of Shavuot (see last week's calendar entries for Sivan 1 through 6).

· Ethics of the Fathers: Chapter 1

It is the custom of many communities (and such is the Chabad custom) to continue the weekly study of a chapter Ethics of the Fathers ("Avot"), one chapter each Shabbat afternoon, through through the summer, until the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanahn (the first six-week cycle is completed on the six Shabbatot between Passover [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CA9947BE6045E449071C34F8330CBC2B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=32EDA7A67C9F82C7B5BF5C8E08D6741E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). This Shabbat, being the first Shabbat after Shavuot, we study Chapter One.

DAILY DOSE: Insider’s History

B"H

Insider's History
=================

The history of humankind is not about the rise and fall of empires, their wars and their conquests. It is about a different sort of war, a singular one: The battle over whether the Creator of this place belongs here or in some heaven above.

That is the battle each one of us fights, and that is the story of all humanity's journey. And that is all that really matters. For that is all there is to any human being.

=======================

· Passing of "Minchat Yitzchak" (1989)

Rabbi Yitzchak Yaakov Weiss, known as the Minchat Yitzchak (the name of the responsa he authored), was born in Galicia in 1902. He headed of the court of Jewish law, the Beit Din, in Grosswardein, Romania before WWII, and after miraculously surviving the war he assumed the same position in Manchester, England.

In the aftermath of the Holocaust he worked diligently on aiding the many women whose husbands disappeared, and presumably perished, during the war; finding halachic "loopholes" which allowed them to remarry according to Jewish law.

He authored a nine-volume set of responsa. In this widely-used work, he addresses many modern-day halachic issues which resulted from the technological explosion, as well as many medical ethics issues.

In 1979, he assumed the position of Av Beit Din (Head of Court) in the Edah Hachareidit, one of the most prominent rabbinical bodies in Israel. He served in this capacity for the last seventeen years of his life.

He passed away on the 11th of Sivan. An estimated 30,000 people attended his funeral.

A group of chassidim, followers of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812) were sitting at a farbrengen (chassidic gathering). The core of their discussion was this: The Rebbe has accomplished something novel--that we are not alone....

General Overview:

This week's reading, Naso, is the longest single portion in the Torah, containing 176 verses. The reading starts with a continuation of the Levite census and a discussion regarding their Tabernacle duties. The laws of the sotah woman and the Nazirite follow. The portion concludes with the Priestly Blessing and the offerings which the Tribal leaders brought in honor of the Tabernacle inauguration.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Is There Proof of the Existence of a Soul?

Is There Proof of the Existence of a Soul?
By Aron Moss
==========================================

Dear Rabbi,

Ever since the death of my brother seven years ago, I have been grappling with the concept of the soul. I wish I could believe in it. I am the type that needs rational arguments to convince me, and it seems the soul is too abstract for my mind. I know these things can't be scientifically proven, but do I have to resort to blind faith to believe in the soul?

Answer:

The pain of losing a loved one is so deep because it is so final. You can never replace a person whom you have lost.

But what if you could?

Imagine it were possible to clone your late brother. A genetically identical replica could be created who talks, thinks, looks and smells precisely the same as the person you grew up with. Furthermore, what if scientists developed a way to preserve and replicate memory? They could take your late brother's memories and insert them into his clone. You could sit with your newly recreated brother and reminisce about childhood experiences and laugh at the good old days, sharing a bond that only brothers can.

Would you opt for this? Would you be satisfied with an exact copy of your brother? Would his death be reversed when you met his clone? Would it end your pain?

I can't imagine the answer could be yes. I can't imagine anyone would truly believe that a clone could replace a brother or sister, son or daughter, parent or spouse or best friend.

But why not? Why would a refurbished model be any different from the original?

Because something is missing. This is not your brother. He may have your brother's voice and your brother's expressions, your brother's manner and mind and memory, but he doesn't have your brother's soul. It just isn't him.

That's what soul is. It is what makes you, you. It is the fragment of G-d that makes each one of us unique. Above your body, beyond your personality, transcending genetics and even deeper than memory is the core of your being, the ineffable essence that is you. We call this your soul. It is soul that makes each person irreplaceable. And it is your brother's soul that you miss.

You don't need scientific proof of the soul, neither do you need blind faith. You know it to exist just as you know your own existence. You can choose to ignore it, or to remember it constantly. Sometimes you can even feel it. And at those moments when you feel your soul, you will feel your brother's soul too.

DAILY DOSE: Blind Love

B"H

Blind Love
==========

The greatest gift of love is to turn a blind eye. The most essential glue of any union is the ability of at least one of you to say, "I understand. It's okay. Let's just get on with things."

After all, that is what we continuously say to our selves, out of our great self-adoration.

· Wolf Wissotzky (1904)

Klonimus Wolf Wissotzky, the son of poor parents, established The Wissotzky Tea company in 1849 and became known as the "King of Russian Tea." He was a great Jewish philanthropist and called for the settlement of Jews in Israel, which initiated the move of Jews to Lod, Nablus and Gaza. In his will he left over a million rubles to charity.

In 1936, Wissotzky Tea became the very first tea company in Palestine and has since been the leading tea company in Israel.
