· Passing of Rabbeinu Tam (1171)
Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir of Romereau (1100?-1171), known as "Rabbeinu Tam", was a grandson of Rashi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=17309AB4A764A7EDC745DA83EF22F40A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, 1040-1105), and one of the primary authors of the Tosaphot commentary on the Talmud; the Bet-Din (rabbinical court) he headed was regarded as the leading Torah authority of his generation.

· Maharam Imprisoned (1286)
Rabbi Meir ben Baruch ("Maharam") of Rothenburg (1215?-1293), the great Talmudic commentator and leading Halachic authority for German Jewry, was imprisoned in the fortress at Ensisheim. A huge ransom was imposed for his release. The money was raised, but Rabbi Meir refused to allow it to be paid lest this encourage the further hostage taking of Jewish leaders. He died in captivity after seven years of imprisonment.

Daily Quote
===========
The etrog has both a taste and an aroma; so, too, do the people of Israel include individuals who have both Torah learning and good deeds.... The date (the fruit of the lulav) has a taste but does not have an aroma; so, too, do the people of Israel include individuals who have Torah but do not have good deeds.... The hadas (myrtle) has an aroma but not a taste; so, too, do the people of Israel include individuals who have good deeds but do not have Torah.... The aravah (willow) has no taste and no aroma; so, too, do the people of Israel include individuals who do not have Torah and do not have good deeds.... Says G-d: "Let them all bond together in one bundle and atone for each other."

· Yahrtzeit Observances
Chabad-Lubavitch Chassidim observe the customs of the yahrtzeit (anniversary of the passing) in accordance with the customs instituted by the Rebbe for the yahrtzeit of his father-in-law and predecessor, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=11C15380CD4DEFF995CFC67E6B2C7543&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (1880-1950), following his passing on the 10th of Shevat in 1950.

· Ethics of the Fathers: Chapter 4
During the summer months, from the Shabbat after Passover until the Shabbat before Rosh Hashahah, we study a weekly chapter of the Talmud's Ethics of the Fathers ("Avot") each Shabbat afternoon; this week we study Chapter Four.

· Joshua Stops the Sun (1273 BCE)
On the third of Tammuz of the year 2488 from creation (1273 BCE), Joshua [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D7C437A15D0DCDDEB7EB15175574F321&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] was leading the Jewish people in one of the battles to conquer the Land of Israel. Victory was imminent, but darkness was about to fall. "Sun," proclaimed Joshua, "be still at Giv'on; moon, at the Ayalon valley" (Joshua 10:12). The heavenly bodies acquiesced, halting their progress through the sky until Israel's armies brought the battle to its successful conclusion.

· Lubavitch Fire (1851)
A great fire destroyed much of the town of Lubavitch, including the home of the third Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=476776665645122E9A5A1B66E1D92B1B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (the "Tzemach Tzeddek", 1789-1866) and many invaluable manuscripts of Chassidic teaching.
· R. Yosef Yitzchak Released from Prison (1927)
The sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (1880-1950), who was arrested on Sivan 15 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C45636BA60CA88E7E7F9D8DB65051D71&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] of 1927 by agents of the GPU (soviet secret police) and the Yevsektzia ("Jewish section" of the Communist Party) for his work to preserve and disseminate Jewish learning and observance throughout the Soviet Empire. Held in the notorious Spalerno prison in Leningrad, he was repeatedly interrogated and beaten. Initially sentenced to death, international pressure compelled the Soviet regime to first commute the sentence to ten years hard labor in Siberia, and then to a three-year term of exile in Kostrama, a town in the interior of Russia.
On the 3rd of Tammuz, 18 days after his arrest, he was released from prison and allowed six hours at home before reporting to the Leningrad train station to embark on his exile. Many gathered at the station to see him off. Though he knew that there were GPU agents present, he spoke to the assembled crowd, encouraging all to persist in the very activities for which he had been arrested. "This," he proclaimed "all the nations of the world must know: Only our bodies were sent into exile and subjugated to alien rule; our souls were not given over into captivity and foreign rule. We must proclaim openly and before all that any matter affecting the Jewish religion, Torah, and its mitzvot and customs is not subject to the coercion of others. No one can impose his belief upon us, nor coerce us to conduct ourselves contrary to our beliefs!"
(On the 12th of Tammuz [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2257B8282786C178795D81C401064E28&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], after serving only nine days of his three year term, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak was informed that he was free to return home. Shortly thereafter, he was allowed to leave the Soviet Union and resettled in Riga, Latvia.)

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

DAILY DOSE: A Different Peace
B"H
A Different Peace
=================
True peace is not a forced truce, not a homogenization of differences, not a common ground that abandons our home territories.
True peace is the oneness that sprouts from diversity, from a panorama of colors, strokes and textures. From the harmony of many instruments each playing a unique part, not one overlapping the other's kingdom by even the breadth of a hair. There, in the most delightful beauty of this world, there shines G-d's most profound oneness.
Those who attempt to blur those borders, they are unwittingly destroying the world. Beginning with the crucial border between man and woman—for this is the beginning of all diversity, the sharpest focus of G-d's oneness, shining intensely upon His precious world.

· Passing of Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka (Gorodenka) (1765)
Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka was a close colleague of the Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=83E9961335A11284A80FB08A8E71A2CE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. His son, Rabbi Simcha, married the Baal Shem Tov’s daughter, Udel. Their son, the famed Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, became the founder of Breslov Chassidism. The Baal Shem Tov once asked Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka to deliver a letter to Rabbi Dov Ber of Mezritch (who later became known as the Mezritcher Maggid [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D8E3AE0BCD53FD62ADAB825F283E005D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) in which he attempted to persuade Rabbi Dov Ber to become his disciple. Upon receiving the letter, Rabbi Dov Ber said, “I see an auspicious sign in the student who bears this letter. If Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka is such a holy tzaddik, how much more so is his teacherâ€"the Baal Shem Tov.†Rabbi Dov Ber then agreed to meet with the Baal Shem Tov and later to join the Chassidic movement.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What is a Jewish Name?
B"H
Tammuz 1, 5772 * June 21, 2012
========================================
Q U E S T I O N O F T H E W E E K
========================================
What is a Jewish Name?
By Dovid Zaklikowski
======================
Names are considered very significant in Judaism. The sages of the Midrash recommend that "one should name one's child after a righteous person, for sometimes the name influences the person's behavior and destiny."[1] As such, Jewish parents have always searched for positive names to give their children, often naming after deceased relatives and righteous scholars.[2]
Rabbi Judah HaChassid (1150-1217) writes that a righteous person's deeds affect all who are given his name.[3] And naming after one's parents is a form of honoring them.[4]
Over the generations there have been several types of Jewish names: 1) Biblical names, 2) Talmudic names, 3) Names from the animal world, 4) Names from nature, 5) Names that include G-d's name, 6) Names of angels. Then there are the many derivatives and nicknames based on these names.
These days, we are encouraged to choose meaningful names that have been passed down for generations. But even if a name is not particularly meaningful, there is no reason to change it unless a person was named after someone wicked.[5]
Jewish boys are named during the ritual circumcision (brit milah), and Jewish girls are named at the first synagogue Torah reading following their birth. The Jewish name given at that time remains with the person for the rest of his or her life. And while one may also have a secular name, it is preferable to use one's Jewish name whenever possible.[6]
Jewish names come from many languages—Hebrew, Yiddish, German, Latin, Greek, Russian, etc. It is not necessary to translate the name into Hebrew for it to be considered a Jewish name.[7]
FOOTNOTES
1.Midrash Tanchuma, Haazinu 7.
2.Parents have also named their children in honor of major life events. According to the sages in the Midrash, however, this practice was appropriate only in biblical times: Rabbi Yosei said: In the old days, people knew their complete pedigrees; therefore, they created names after events. We, however, do not know our complete pedigrees; therefore, we give names after our ancestors. Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel said: In the old days, they knew how to use the spirit of prophecy, and therefore they created names after events. We, however, do not know how to use the spirit of prophecy; therefore, we give names after our ancestors. (Genesis Rabbah 37:7)

What is a Jewish Name?
By Dovid Zaklikowski
======================

The Rebbe's 18th Yahrtzeit: Prayer, Reflection and Action
Tammuz 1, 5772 - June 21, 2012

By the Grace of G-d
Dear Friend,
This coming Shabbat, June 23rd, (3 Tammuz on the Jewish calendar), marks eighteen years since the passing of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory.
Traditionally, this is a day for reflection, learning, prayer, positive resolutions and acts of loving-kindness.
We've posted lots of information (link below) to help our visitors learn more about the Rebbe's devotion to G-d, discover how deeply he cared for each human being, and glean insight into his teachings. We trust that the Rebbe's example will serve as a source of motivation and inspiration to each of us privileged to live in a generation shaped by his extraordinary vision - to continue his life's work in spreading Jewish pride, practice, knowledge and love to the furthest reaches of the globe.
* * * * *
The date of a righteous person's passing is also a particularly auspicious time for G-d to hear our prayers, particularly those recited at the resting place of the departed tzaddik (righteous person). In keeping with the age-old tradition of writing prayer petitions at our holiest sites, it is also customary to send written notes to the Rebbe's resting place for intercession On High for blessings large and small, in matters both material and spiritual.
The editors and staff of Chabad.org will be visiting the Rebbe's resting place on Friday (June 22) and Sunday (June 24), and we would be happy to facilitate delivering your prayer requests together with our own. If you would like us to do so, please click here to send us your letter for the Rebbe.
* * * * *
The Rebbe would frequently insist that even the loftiest of ideas must be translated into actual deed.
Please join Jews throughout the world in learning something additional on this special day, reciting an additional prayer, and giving some extra charity (before or after Shabbat). Let us also try and apply some of the Rebbe's care and selflessness to our own interactions with family, friends and total strangers. There can be no more fitting tribute to the Rebbe than millions of good deeds, mitzvot, performed on his day.
May G-d help us that in the merit of our collective acts of goodness we quickly greet our righteous Moshiach, at which time we will be reunited with our beloved Rebbe and all of our loved ones.
Sincerely,
The Chabad.org Team

DAILY DOSE: Open for Me
B"H
Open for Me
===========
The human being has a soul. The universe has a soul. The soul of all souls is the infinite light of the Creator of all things.
As much as the human soul yearns for the infinite light of its Creator, much more so does the Creator yearn to be found within the human soul.
As much as the soul of this universe yearns to reunite with the infinite light of its Creator, much more so does the Creator yearn for His infinite light to enter within His world.
If so, what force could stand between them? What could hold back the Creator's infinite light?
Only His desire that this union occur with our consent, that we be the ones to open the door.
"Open for me just as wide as a pinhole," G-d beseeches us, "and I will open for you as the entranceway of a great hall."

Rosh Chodesh Tammuz
======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Rosh Chodesh Observances
Today is the second of the two Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") days for the Hebrew month of "Tammuz" (when a month has 30 days, both the last day of the month and the first day of the following month serve as the following month's Rosh Chodesh).
Special portions are added to the daily prayers: Hallel (Psalms 113-118) is recited -- in its "partial" form -- following the Shacharit morning prayer, and the Yaaleh V'yavo prayer is added to the Amidah and to Grace After Meals; the additional Musaf prayer is said (when Rosh Chodesh is Shabbat, special additions are made to the Shabbat Musaf). Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted.
Many have the custom to mark Rosh Chodesh with a festive meal and reduced work activity. The latter custom is prevalent amongst women, who have a special affinity with Rosh Chodesh -- the month being the feminine aspect of the Jewish Calendar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=80FC090A7C1CF05E92F3B78EE3DB4608&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Birth and Passing of Joseph (1562 and 1452 BCE)
Joseph, the son of the patriarch Jacob [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=20003C1F503FBCD425AF6695C1F3709A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], was born in Charan (Mesopotamia) on the 1st of Tammuz of the year 2199 from creation (1562 BCE), the first child of Jacob's most beloved wife, Rachel [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9F9AD16B6B1F6A1B94BA37349F429B9A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], born after 7 childless years of marriage. He passed away on the same date 110 years later, in Egypt.
When Joseph was six years old, Jacob and his family returned to the Holy Land, eventually settling in Hebron [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7CEF494FB0620D968A3B60D0AFC1FBA2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. Though younger than 10 of his 11 brothers, he was his father's favorite, and a great rivalry [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C9CF1531E9C0B568C9AF0773FE8F0DBE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] existed between him and his brothers, whose animosity toward him increased when he related two dreams [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=231FC876B837B73C743B340EF8FF21DF&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] he had forecasting that he is destined to rule over them.
When Joseph was 17, he was sold into slavery [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=14095F1CF920DE26DF6E1A08CC4C1760&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] by his brothers and taken to Egypt; when he refused the advances of his master's wife, she had him placed in prison [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8C07B3C668ED601790A0DDA3201E0464&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], where he languished for 12 years. At age 30, he interpreted a pair of mysterious dreams dreamt by Pharaoh, and was appointed viceroy of Egypt to oversee the gathering and storage of grain in preparation for the seven years [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=11883A4F0E8BBBE0420A77A687CD0C61&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] of famine that Pharaoh's dreams had predicted. He married Asnat, and had two children, Menasseh and Ephraim [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5426F885AE11C581348ED19A67D578D8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
The great famine brought his brothers to Egypt to purchase grain; after subjecting them to a series of trials to test their loyalty to each other and their remorse over what they had done to him, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, was reconciled with them, and settled his father [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A805CC6EF43FF4BA85F16345DCCF3F69&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and entire family -- 70 souls [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=69DB05C0D3AFCC7AC2C333238F4495A4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] in all -- in Egypt.
Joseph passed away in Egypt on his 110th birthday. The first of his brothers to die, he transmitted to them the divine promise to Jacob that his children will be taken out of Egypt and restored to their homeland, and made them promise to take his remains [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2C819363752D0D28D3B060D433B97BDB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] with them when they go.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

And Gâ€'d spoke all these words, saying: “I am Gâ€'d, your Gâ€'d, who has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods beside Me . . .â€
