DAILY DOSE: Peek-A-Boo
B"H
Peek-A-Boo
==========
Everywhere in the world, parents play peek-a-boo with their children. It is a major discovery of life, a cornerstone in human development: To realize that something is there even when you cannot see it, that the world is not defined by your subjective perception, that there is something that absolutely is—whether you know of it or not.
All our life, all of the world, is G-d playing with us that same game. He peeks with a miracle and then hides behind nature. Eventually, we look behind nature to find Him there.

=======================
· Birth & Passing of R. Dovber of Lubavitch (1773; 1827)
Kislev 9 is both the birthday and day of passing of Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch, son of and successor to the founder of Chabad Chassidism, Rabbi Schneur Zalman·of Liadi. Rabbi DovBer was known for his unique style of "broadening rivers" -- his teaching were the intellectual rivers to his father's wellspring, lending breadth and depth to the principles set down by Rabbi Schneur Zalman.
Born in Li'ozna, White Russia in 1773, Rabbi DovBer was named after Rabbi Schneur Zalman's mentor and teacher, Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0A08C459B4F27E83718EA35DED88EB01&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], who had passed away on Kislev 19 of the previous year. Rabbi DovBer assumed the leadership of Chabad upon his father's passing in 1812. In 1813 he settled in the town of Lubavitch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F71EADA90A8D8CF81D278A312EFDD6EE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], which was to serve as the movement's headquarters for the next 102 years. In 1826, he was arrested on charges that his teachings threatened the imperial authority of the Czar, but was subsequently exonerated.
Rabbi DovBer passed away on his 54th birthday in 1827, a day before the first anniversary of his liberation (see calendar entries for tomorrow, Kislev 10 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2FA8AF8E1FFECEC0DDEA09A60A7E16E3&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).

======================================================================
General Overview:
In this week's reading, Vayeitzei, Jacob travels to his uncle Laban. En route he stops at the Temple Mount where G‑d appears and assures him that he will return safely to the Land of Canaan. Jacob stays for twenty years in Charan before returning to Canaan. During his stay he shepherds Laban's sheep, and survives and prospers despite all his uncle's attempted deceptions. He marries Leah and Rachel, and the first eleven tribes are born.
======================================================================
THIS WEEK'S FEATURES:
Encountering G-d (By Rabbi Jonathan Sacks)
There is an element of the religious life that is beyond conscious control. It comes out of nowhere, when we are least expecting it.
>> http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=00E7493FF57C0060162BB5211614C785&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2
THE PARSHAH
Vayeitzei in a Nutshell
Genesis 28:10–32:3
Jacob rests on his way to Charan and dreams of a ladder with angels ascending and descending. Laban tricks Jacob into marrying his daughter Leah. A week later, Jacob also marries Rachel. He works for Laban for 14 years, then escapes with his wives and children.

COLUMNISTS
Laban the Anti-Semite (By Rabbi Jonathan Sacks)
Laban begins by seeming like a friend. He offers Jacob refuge when he is in flight from Esau who has vowed to kill him. Yet it turns out that his behaviour is less generous than self-interested and calculating.
>> http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C368A8E694CFE5CDB1C3932057EADCB4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2
Aleph-Bet before Alphabet (By Levi Avtzon)
Sociologists would surely have predicted that Jacob would rear confused children who would grow up with a deep hatred toward the "archaic," "burdensome" values of their ancestors.

Why I Bought a Home (By Elisha Greenbaum)
Is life a journey or a destination? Is this a process or a product? How can I live my current life to the fullest, while holding out hope that this is nothing but a temporary assignment?

General Overview:
In this week's reading, Vayeitzei, Jacob travels to his uncle Laban. En route he stops at the Temple Mount where G‑d appears and assures him that he will return safely to the Land of Canaan. Jacob stays for twenty years in Charan before returning to Canaan. During his stay he shepherds Laban's sheep, and survives and prospers despite all his uncle's attempted deceptions. He marries Leah and Rachel, and the first eleven tribes are born.

THIS WEEK'S FEATURES:
Encountering G-d (By Rabbi Jonathan Sacks)
There is an element of the religious life that is beyond conscious control. It comes out of nowhere, when we are least expecting it.

Is There a Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Track?
By Tzvi Freeman
===============================================
Dear Rabbi,
My doctor recommended that I take up some type of meditation [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6318D8B2C2CFA517917FB63A7F1D9ED4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], mentioning "mindfulness" as one option. I understand that this particular meditation is connected to idolatry.
Are there Jewish meditation techniques I could use?
Answer:
Mindfulness is a Jewish idea and it is called kavanah.
Take one page of the siddur (prayerbook) [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D8AAB7D5BC1FC80F04B80A6AC5A0671D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and learn the meaning of each word on that page. Learn it as deep as you can. Or maybe, instead of a page, you should start with one line of the prayers—such as the Modeh Ani [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EB6F1755A46E19F0947A32DFFEFCD235&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] or the Shema Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=56A3D5D1E703D8D94B2CDD42BDED2EBC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
Practice saying each word with clear mental focus. Ignore any other thought that enters your mind. This is called kavanah.
Slowly, you can build up through the siddur until much of your morning prayer time can be spent in this state.
The same applies to all the blessings on food [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DFE3419B3F6F483B8B4ECDD6F1A39CE7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] you say during the day. And eventually, every act of living can, and must, be done with kavanah, for the sake of heaven. As Solomon the wise taught, "In all your ways, know Him."[1]
Conscious breathing or some other technique could help as a preparation to this exercise.

MITZVAH MINUTE: The Kippah (Skullcap)
B"H
Kislev 7, 5773 * November 21, 2012
==============
MITZVAH MINUTE
==============
The Kippah (Skullcap)
By Lorne Rozovsky
=====================
A kippah (literally: dome) is the Hebrew word for skullcap, also referred to in Yiddish as a yarmulke, or less frequently as a koppel.
Jewish law requires men to cover their heads as a sign of respect and reverence for G-d when praying, studying Torah, saying a blessing or entering a synagogue.
This practice has its roots in biblical times, when the priests in the Temple were instructed to cover their heads.
Traditionally, Jewish men and boys wear the kippah at all times, a symbol of their awareness of, and submission to, a "higher" entity.
Although it is not explicitly required by law, the practice is noted in the Talmud, and through the ages, this became an accepted Jewish custom to the point that according to the majority of halachic authorities, it is mandatory. One should, therefore, not walk or even sit, bareheaded. Small children should also be taught to cover their heads.
Aside from the commonblack kippah, many wear kippot (plural form of kippah) of various colors or designs. Some communities have developed kippah designs that are highly intricate works of art, such as those made by Jewish artisans from Yemen and Georgia, most of whom now live in Israel.

The Kippah (Skullcap)
By Lorne Rozovsky
=====================
