· Ten Days of Repentance

The 10-day period beginning on Rosh Hashahnah and ending on Yom Kippur is known as the "Ten Days of Repentance"; this is the period, say the sages, of which the prophet speaks when he proclaims (Isaiah 55:6) "Seek G-d when He is to be found; call on Him when He is near." Psalm 130, Avinu Malkeinu and other special inserts and additions are included in our daily prayers during these days.

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Shabbat Shuvah

The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah, "Shabbat of Return [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6FF5A859314C417E3F62D7D60525A007&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]." The name derives from the Haftarah (reading from the prophets) for this Shabbat, which opens with the words (Hosea 14:2), "Return O Israel unto the L-rd your G-d..." Occurring in the "Ten Days of Repentance" (see "Laws & Customs" for Tishrei 3), it is a most auspicious time to rectify the failings and missed opportunities of the past and positively influence the coming year.

The master Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria ("Ari") taught that the seven days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (which will always include one Sunday, one Monday, etc.) correspond to the seven days of the week. The Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur includes within itself all Sundays of the year; the Monday embodies all Mondays, and so on. Shabbat Shuvah is thus the archetypal Shabbat [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9A3E59E7E2B6CC54C8613079B179B6BD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] -- the juncture in time at which we are empowered to influence every Shabbat of our year.

Getting Personal
================

There is no human relationship until a relationship has broken down. As long as each fulfills the other's expectations, there is only a contract. There are no people, only transactions.

Once trust is breached, a new depth enters: The depth of the person. If there is truly a relationship—if it is the person inside that matters—then there is a search for forgiveness, for return and for healing.

So it was that within forty days of entering into a contract with the One Above, the Children of Israel sinned. And the soul below and the One Above discovered they could not part from one another.

At the very beginning of Yom Kippur, before Kol Nidrei, we declare: "With the sanction of the
Omnipresent, and with the sanction of the congregation, by authority of the Heavenly Court, and by authority of the earthly court, we hereby grant permission to pray with those who have transgressed." All agree that on this day, there are no differences between Jews; they all stand united as one in the presence of G-d.

General Overview:

This week's reading, Vayelech, recounts the events of the final day of Moses' terrestrial life. Moses transferred leadership to Joshua and wrote a Torah scroll which he handed over to the Levites. Moses commanded the Israelites to gather following every Sabbatical year, and informed them of the suffering which will be their lot when they will abandon the laws of the Torah.

WEEKLY STORY: The Horse Kid Returns

B"H

Tishrei 4, 5773 * September 20, 2012

The Horse Kid Returns
By Tzvi Freeman
=====================

Nowadays it's a motorbike. Back then it was a fast horse. So this teenage kid pulls up to the shul on his speedy white horse, ties it to a post and swaggers in for a talk with the rabbi. The Big Rabbi. Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. Just so he can get his parents off his back.

"Hi rabbi! Watzup?" He leans back, hands behind head, right foot up so that his boot wags over his left knee.

That's okay. Rabbi Schneur Zalman is cool, too. "Nice horse you got there," he says.

"Best you can get!" answers the horse kid.

"Fast?"

"Meanly fast!"

The rabbi shakes his head. "Too fast is not good."

"Hey, fast is awesome! I can beat those Cossacks any day. Man, they see this Jewish kid whoosh past them and their teeth are grinding."

The rabbi still shakes his head. "What if a fast horse gets loose? A slow horse runs away, you could still catch him. If your fast horse is gone, he's gone."

"My horse won't run away. He knows I'm boss." "Hey, fast is awesome! I can beat those Cossacks any day."

"What if he does? What if he figures he just wants to be free? That he doesn't want a boss?"

Horse kid is squirming around, craning his head to check out the window on his horse. Still there. But ya never know.

"But then," Rabbi Schneur Zalman conceded, "if he can run away so fast, he can run back home real fast, too."

Horse kid smiles again. "Yeah, that's right!"

The rabbi smiles too. Then he leans forward and holds the kid's hand. His hand is warm and kind. His eyes, too.

"So what about you?" he says.

The kid liked the rabbi. With a little more guidance, he became a super-fast, awesome cool chassid.

Editor's Note:

Dear Friends,

When I was little I had a hard time sitting through the Yom Kuppur services. When I would inevitably tug on my mother's clothes and not-so-discreetly whine about being bored, she would have me read some interesting parts of the prayer service. Sometimes she would point out how the prayers form intricate acrostics. It did not keep me from sneaking out to the hallway to play tag, but it kept me looking at and thinking about the prayers longer than I would have. So, thank you, Ma.

A couple of decades later, I'm not much better at staying focused. So I tried my mother's tactic, only to find that the machzor (High Holiday prayerbook) is filled with the most amazing poetry, and it is holy too.

Since then, I have been thinking about prayer as a means of expression. It is generally said that Torah is what we get from G‑d, and prayer is what we express back toward Him. In other words, it's art, sacred art. Not every piece catches my imagination, but the ones that do give me inspiration to bring the others to life in my mind.

If you face similar difficulties, perhaps the best distraction from a long prayer service are the prayers themselves.

Have a meaningful and easy fast, and a sweet new year.

Dovid Taub,
on behalf of the Chabad.org Editorial Team
