Passover - Seventh Day * Omer: Day Six - Yesod sheb'Chessed

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Torah Reading

On the Seventh Day of Passover we read how on this day the sea split [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FE60BD65B9EC371FB36B61C0871239E3&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for the Children of Israel and drowned the pursuing Egyptians, and the "Song at the Sea" sung by the people upon their deliverance (Exodus 13:17-15:26 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=87446928FF4C4FBEFBE97BC841E037F7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]; full summary with commentary here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D0E47DFBB16D75EDF891422FCE69324D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).

· Partial Hallel

Unlike all the other festivals, only the abridged version of Hallel (Psalms 113-118, recited on special occasions in praise and thanksgiving to G-d) is said on the latter days of Passover. The reason for this is based on the Midrash which relates that when the Egyptians were drowning in the sea, the angels in heaven desired to sing; but G-d said to them: "The work of My hands [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E39985E1A4690B75E30DF6F1BCE85AB0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is drowning in the sea, and you wish to sing?"

· Count "Seven Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the seventh day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is seven days, which are one week, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=822BB2CC498E4FC2C469E1A045997076&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Malchut sheb'Chessed -- "Receptiveness in Kindness"

The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

· Moses Departs Midian (1314 BCE)

After seven days of contention with G-d at the burning bush (see entry [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8A08FE85A3E38DBA6491B3607275F404&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for "Nissan 15"), Moses assumed the mission of taking the Children of Israel out of Egypt. G-d commanded Moses: "Speak to the Children of Israel, that they should move forward!"

Nachshon ben Aminadav of the tribe of Judah was the first to jump into the sea; the water split, and "the children of Israel walked across on the dry land in the midst of the sea [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2A3C66D4E11212FB3F8AF3537150E61C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]." Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Passover Torah Readings

Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=40FB6DA71A230275A8353E222A8D5B18&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for a summary of the Passover Torah readings.

· Chol Hamoed

Of the eight days of Passover, the first two and the last two are "yom tov" (festival days). The middle four days are called chol hamoed--"weekdays of the festival," also called "the intermediate days." (In Israel, where Passover is observed for seven days, the first and last days are yom tov, and the middle five days are chol hamoed).

The yom tov days are days of rest, during which all creative work [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D86E71C10691F13ECCB77C7996975B98&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is forbidden, as it is on the Shabbat, with the exception of certain types of work associated with food preparation (e.g., cooking and "carrying"). On chol hamoed the prohibition of work is less stringent--work whose avoidance would result in "significant loss" is permitted (except when chol hamoed is also Shabbat, when all work is forbidden).

The "Yaale V'yavo" prayer is included in all prayers and Grace After Meals. Hallel (partial) and Musaf are recited following the Shacharit (morning) prayers. It is the Chabad custom not to put on tefillin during the "intermediate days".

Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8397A0537243F09DD658CB233D732CA9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for a more detailed treatment of the laws of Chol Hamoed.

· Count "Six Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the sixth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is six days to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing.)

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1C1F7D5B23623FB3766BF2B8A388DB54&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Yesod sheb'Chessed -- "Connection in Kindness"

· Night of Learning

It is customary to remain awake on the eve of the Seventh of Passover (i.e., tonight) and spend the entire night in Torah study and joyous celebration of the great miracle of the splitting of the sea.

· Pharaoh Corners Jews at Red Sea (1313 BCE)

Pharaoh's pursuit of the Jews (see Jewish History for the 18th of Nissan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=611DAAEE630F9014D887D876F0CF325F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) ended on this day, on the shores of the Red Sea.

A terrified Jewish nation divides into several factions. Some advocated mass suicide, others wanted to surrender and return to Egypt, the bolder ones prepared to battle the Egyptians, while others advised the nation to pray.

G-d thought otherwise. He instructed the Jews to simply proceed onwards -- despite the sea which stood in their path.

The Jews complied, and the entire following night they went through the parted waters of the Red Sea (see Jewish History for the 21st of Nissan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CA93FCF1B7F13C7A6C3E7D8856B6BE1B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ])

Daily Quote
===========

There are three places regarding which the nations of the world cannot accuse Israel and say, "You have stolen them." The Machpeilah Cave in Hebron, as it is written (Genesis 23:16): "And Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver." The Temple Mount in Jerusalem: "So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold" (I Chronicles 21:25). And Joseph's tomb in Shechem: "And [Jacob] bought the piece of land for a hundred kesitah" (Genesis 33:19).

Today is: Shabbat, Nissan 19, 5771
Passover (Chol Hamoed) * Omer: Day Four - Netzach sheb'Chessed

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Passover Torah Readings

Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C7B49E87E6CA249EEB647AC44BE4DF1D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for a summary of the Passover Torah readings.

The yom tov days are days of rest, during which all creative work [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E733CF4B8809942130ABB9EA687054C6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is forbidden, as it is on the Shabbat, with the exception of certain types of work associated with food preparation (e.g., cooking and "carrying").

· Count "Five Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the fifth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is five days to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=25BDAE9395CF4BF32558F66ACF8CBF07&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Hod sheb'Chessed -- "Humility in Kindness"

· Purim Fossano (1796)

On this day in 1796, the Jewish community of Fossano, Italy was miraculously saved from the hands of a murderous mob by a French bomb which landed just in time to scare away the attackers. This day was established as "Purim Fossano" in commemoration of the miraculous salvation.

For the complete story, see Purim Fossano [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=66AD5C9DE4B8FCCE7068675D35992536&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Rabbi Zemba Murdered (1943)

Rabbi Menachem Zemba was born in a suburb of Warsaw, Poland in 1883. A follower of the Gerrer chassidic dynasty, he was a great genius and Torah scholar. He joined the Warsaw rabbinate in 1935, and was recognized as a leading rabbinic figure in pre-war Eastern Europe.

Rabbi Zemba was a moral force in the Warsaw Ghetto, always striving to infuse the community with optimism and hope. He arranged clandestine locations in cellars and bomb shelters where girls and boys would study Torah. Although afforded opportunities to escape the ghetto, he refused to do so, insisting that his presence was needed by the Jews in the ghetto.

Rabbi Zemba was a strong supporter of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, donating personal funds for ammunition and giving his whole-hearted blessing for the endeavor (see Jewish History for the 27th of Nissan [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B9D80A95E8E0C069884352238D023036&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). Five days after the fighting begun, on Shabbat the 19th of Nissan, the house were Rabbi Zemba was hiding was set afire by the SS. When attempting to escape, Rabbi Zemba was shot dead by the Nazis. May G-d avenge his blood.

The rabbi was buried in the Ghetto, and in 1958 his body was flown to Israel where he was buried in Jerusalem amid a great funeral procession.

Rabbi Zemba was a prolific writer. Unfortunately, most of his scholarly manuscripts were burnt in the Warsaw Ghetto. His few works which were authored before the war are still studied by Torah scholars world-wide.

  • Своими руками: Необычное решение проблемы плохих дорог от Хулианы Сантакрус Эрреры (Juliana Santacruz Herrera)

(Takayuki Hori)
