· Blood Libel Declared False (1817)

On Adar 24, Czar Alexander I of Russia declared the Blood Libel -- the infamous accusation that Jews murdered Christian children to use their blood in the baking of matzah for Passover, for which thousands of Jews were massacred through the centuries -- to be false. Nevertheless, nearly a hundred years later the accusation was officially leveled against Mendel Beilis in Kiev.

Daily Quote
===========

The term "chassid" is an ancient one that the Sages had even applied to Adam. It describes perfection and excellence in intellect or in emotive character-traits, or in both. In Chabad Chassidic doctrine, the appelation "chassid" refers to one who recognizes his own essence-character and his standing in the knowledge and study of Torah, as well as his situation in observing mitzvot. He knows what he lacks and he is concerned and takes pains to fill that void. He is diligent in obedience in the manner of "accepting the yoke of Heaven."

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Parshat Parah

The Torah reading of Parah (Numbers 19) is added to the weekly reading. Parah details the laws of the "Red Heifer" and the process by which a person rendered ritually impure by contact with a dead body was purified.

(When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity in time for the bringing of the Passover offering in the Temple. Today, though we're unable to fulfill the Temple-related rituals in practice, we fulfill them spiritually by studying their laws in the Torah. Thus, we study and read the section of Parah in preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover.)

· Blessing the New Month

This Shabbat is Shabbat Mevarchim ("the Shabbat that blesses" the new month): a special prayer is recited blessing the Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") of upcoming month of Nissan, which occurs next Shabbat.

Prior to the blessing, we announce the precise time of the molad, the "birth" of the new moon. Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6AEFAE8AA2EEFB2C7E3881C2EDC84E49&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for molad times.

It is a Chabad custom to recite the entire book of Psalms before morning prayers, and to conduct farbrengens (chassidic gatherings) in the course of the Shabbat.

· Passing of 1st Rebbe of Ger (1866)

Chassidic Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Altar (1799-1866), author of Chiddushei Harim (a commentary on the Talmud and Shulchan Aruch), was a disciple of the Maggid of Koshnitz and Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, and the founder of the "Ger" (Gerer) Chassidic dynasty. All his 13 sons had died in his lifetime, and he was succeeded (in 1870) by his young grandson, Rabbi Yehudah Leib Alter (the "Sefat Emmet").

· Earthquake Saves Roman Jews from Forced Conversion (1430)

The church and the government of Rome set Wednesday, March 6, 1430, as the day when all the Jews of Rome must convert or face death. On that day a great earthquake shook Rome and many of the archbishops and priests who conceived the decree were killed. Following the earthquake, Pope Martin V annulled the decree.

He was a prisoner in Auschwitz, Matthausen and Gunkirchen, where he was finally liberated by the Americans. (Many viewers may find details described to be extremely disturbing. Why Do We Have to Respect Our Parents?
By Dovid Zaklikowski
======================================

The commandment to honor your parents is one of the Ten Commandments [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4490678EE9E6A07BF1DD1ACC6AEE0F59&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. The verse states (Exodus 20:12 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2586679A80035F7149F36FB232F84F60&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), "Honor your father and your mother, in order that your days be lengthened on the land that the L‑rd, your G‑d, is giving you."

The basis for the commandment to honor our parents [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=68CFF37E33B12AFDBB5563A40638ACA6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] might be seen as rational and reasonable, since it would only seem right to acknowledge all that our parents gave us. However, ultimately, we honor our parents because G‑d commands us to; so even if it seems like an attitude of respect doesn't apply in our situation, we should still show respect.[1]

However, the sages do discuss several reasons for the commandment to honor your parents:

* Parents are partners with G‑d in the creation of a child; therefore, respecting your parents is also respecting G‑d, the ultimate Creator.[2]
* Honoring your parents expresses thankfulness to those who brought you into this world.[3] Just like you should be grateful to someone who does you a favor, so too, you should be grateful to your parents, who are the only reason you are here in this world to begin with.[4]

Others note that an integral part of this commandment is respect for your parents' heritage and their knowledge, to the point that you rely on it; for that is the way that an understanding of our world is passed down through the generations.[5] Our current existence is not formed in a vacuum, separate from the worlds of our parents, their parents and so on; rather, we are all one continuous chain of existence.[6] Two Types of Commandments

It is interesting to note the difference between the first two reasons mentioned above.

The commandments in general, and specifically the Ten Commandments, can be divided into two categories:

* Between man and G‑d.
* Between man and man.

When it comes to commandments that deal with issues between man and G‑d, when we return to G‑d and resolve to do what is correct, G‑d forgives. However, when it comes to transgressing a commandment that deals with another person, returning to G‑d does not help, and we need to turn to the other person to request forgiveness.[7]

According to the first explanation above, honoring your parents falls into the category of a commandment between man and G‑d.[8] The implication is that it would be enough to just return to G‑d should one transgress the commandment.

However, most commentators include the commandment of honoring your parents in the list of commandments between man and man;[9] therefore, should you transgress, you would need to ask for forgiveness from your parents too.[10]

See Kibbud Av Vaem: Honor Due to Parents [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=68CFF37E33B12AFDBB5563A40638ACA6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

DAILY DOSE: When Is G‑d?

B"H

When Is G‑d?
============

G-d is found at two poles of Time:

He is found outside time and beyond.
And He is found here within the moment now.

From that point beyond time, G-d looks within the moment now, and He says, "From this, I will have delight."

With that choice, all of past and future is created anew.

Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Purim Narbonne (1236)

In the course of a fight with a Christian fisherman, a Jew dealt him a blow which led to his death. The infuriated Christians of Narbonne, France, started rioting and attacking the Jewish community.

The governor of Narbonne, Don Aymeric, quickly intervened, and dispatched a contingent of soldiers to protected the Jewish community. The riot was immediately halted and all the spoils stolen during the riots were returned to the Jews. The 21st of Adar was recorded as "Purim Narbonne," a day when the community annually celebrated this historic event.

· Passing of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk (1787)

The great Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk (1717-1786) was one of the elite disciples of Rabbi DovBer, the Maggid of Mezritch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E0D68D034A50A1428FD5BADDDD8CBFB9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and a colleague of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=000540FB04E57061C7BF8F0458441D85&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. He is also widely known as the No'am Elimelech, the title of the renowned chassidic work he authored.

Rabbi Elimelech attracted many thousands of chassidim, among them many who after his passing became great chassidic masters in their own right. Most notable amongst them was Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz, the "Seer of Lublin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3B9F9B0C3D0EADD68B05235B263CC53D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]." Many of the current chassidic dynasties trace themselves back to Rabbi Elimelech.

General Overview:

In this week's portion, Vayakhel-Pekudei, Moses gathers the Jews and relays to them all the details regarding the construction of the Tabernacle, its vessels, and the priestly garments. The actual construction and assembly is also described. This portion repeats many of the details described in the portions of Terumah and Tetzaveh, wherein G‑d instructed Moses regarding the assembly of all these objects. The Tabernacle is erected, and G‑d's presence dwells therein.

COLUMNISTS

Creativity Without Bounds (By Rochel Holzkenner)

Creative self-expression is euphoric. But in Jewish thought, the expression of one's talents is seen as something more—each soul has a unique mission as an agent of G-d. The women who traveled with Moses in the desert had keen soul-awareness . . .

The Princess and the Maidservant (By Mendel Kalmenson)

Building the Tabernacle, G-d's terrestrial residence, must have been a most sought-after contract. What was it about Bezalel and Oholiab that caused them to land this coveted assignment?

Searching and Fearless (By Rabbi Ben A.)

The purpose of Step Four's inventory is not only to be able to identify the character defects that we wish to have removed, but also to become aware of our assets.
