Pesach Sheini ("Second Passover") * Omer: Day 29 - Chessed sheb'Hod

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Eat Matzah

It is customary to eat matzah today to mark the "Second Passover" (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=02241540A0A72321F58935988F2610C1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]").

· Count "Thirty Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the thirtieth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is thirty days, which are four weeks and two days, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FAEBB54E6BD7A5FBA7A7FCBB65332561&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Gevurah sheb'Hod -- "Restraint in Humility"

The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

· "Second Passover" (1312 BCE)

A year after the Exodus, G-d instructed the people of Israel to bring the Passover offering on the afternoon of Nissan 14, and to eat it that evening, roasted over the fire, together with matzah and bitter herbs, as they had done on the previous year just before they left Egypt. "There were, however, certain persons who had become ritually impure [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6CBDA1A1EA583C7E213AC4670DE13B32&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] through contact with a dead body, and could not, therefore, prepare the Passover offering on that day. They approached Moses and Aaron ... and they said: '...Why should we be deprived, and not be able to present G-d's offering in its time, amongst the children of Israel?'" (Numbers 9).

In response to their plea, G-d established the 14th of Iyar as a "second Passover" (pesach sheini) for anyone who was unable to bring the offering on its appointed time in the previous month. The day thus represents the "second chance" achieved by teshuvah the power of repentance and "return." In the words of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch, "The Second Passover means that it's never a 'lost case.'"

· Passing of Rabbi Meir (2nd Century CE)

Rabbi Meir, a second century scholar and scribe, was among the foremost disciples of Rabbi Akiba. His colleagues called him Meir because he "enlightened the eyes of the sages" with his genius and scholarship ("Meir" comes from the Hebrew word "Or," light).

Rabbi Meir's long life was rife with personal tragedy (see the links below for details). Aside for his personal travails, he lived in the troubled times following the destruction of the second Holy Temple. After his beloved teacher, Rabbi Akiva, was executed by the Romans, he fled to Babylon until the persecutions eased up.

His wisdom and teachings are so often quoted in the Mishnah and Talmud that every anonymous teaching in the Mishnah is attributed to him.

His wife, Beruria, was also famous for her Torah knowledge, piety, and wisdom.

He is buried in the holy city of Tiberias.

· Jews of Bisenz Massacred (1605)

The Jews of Bisenz, Austria were massacred on the 14th of Iyar, 5365 (1605).

· Germans Burn Jewish Books (1933)

Following the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany in the year 1933, the Nazis burned thousands of books written by Jews on the 14 of Iyar of that year.

· Eichmann Captured in Buenos Aires (1960)

Adolf Eichmann, a key party in implementing of Hitler's "final solution," was captured by agents of the Israeli "Mossad" in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eichmann was in charge of all transportation required for the shipment of Jews to the extermination camps. The height of his career was reached in Hungary in 1944, when he managed to transport 400,000 Jews to the gas chambers in less than five weeks.

After the war, Eichmann fled to Argentina and lived under the assumed name of Ricardo Klement for ten years until Israeli Mossad agents abducted him on May 11, 1960 and smuggled him out of the country to stand trial in Jerusalem for his crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

During the four months of the trial over one hundred witnesses testified against him. Eichmann took the stand and used the defense that he was just obeying orders. "Why me," he asked. "Why not the local policemen, thousands of them? They would have been shot if they had refused to round up the Jews for the death camps. Everybody killed the Jews."

Eichmann was found guilty on all counts, sentenced to death and hanged at Ramleh Prison on May 31, 1962.

Life Lives On
=============

Why is there death in the world? So that evil will not live forever.

Because, since we ate of the Tree of Knowledge, no one walks forward without stumbling, no one climbs without falling, no one does good all his life without causing some damage along the way. Until, at the end, our lives are an absurd muddle of good and evil inextricably bound.

With death, evil dies as well. The failures, the ugly acts and the damage done—all these wither and eventually perish. But the good we have accomplished—and that we truly are—this lives forever.

Omer: Day 27 - Yesod sheb'Netzach

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Count "Twenty-Eight Days to the Omer" Tonight

Tomorrow is the twenty-eighth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is twenty-eight days, which are four weeks, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).

The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3F7EABC41BE068F94F3B71983FA0844E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Tonight's Sefirah: Malchut sheb'Netzach -- "Receptiveness in Ambition"

=======================
Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Roman Jews Granted Privileges (1402)

On the 12th of Iyar, 1402, the Jews of Rome were granted "privileges" by Pope Boniface IX. They were given legal right to observe their Shabbat [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=89AAD0D18B090D3857EA37DA253106FB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], protection from local oppressive officials, their taxes were reduced and orders were given to treat Jews as full-fledged Roman citizens.

======================================================================

General Overview:

This week's reading, Acharei-Kedoshim, begins with a detailed description of the service of the High Priest on Yom Kippur. Dozens of commandments are then discussed in this week's reading. Among them: the prohibitions against offering sacrifices outside the Temple; consuming blood; incestuous, adulterous, or other forbidden relationships; various mandatory gifts for the poor; love for every Jew, prohibition against sorcery; honesty in business dealings; and sexual morality.

THIS WEEK'S FEATURES:

Conscious Cuisine (By Rochel Holzkenner)

Once I was hooked on raw food, the awful restrictions seemed like a privileged progress towards a higher plane of sensitivity and consciousness -- precisely the Jewish view of G-d's restrictions.

COLUMNISTS

Eulogies for the Living (By Levi Avtzon)

It seems there's always so much good to say about those who have departed. But wasn't the deceased, like all others, a human being? Did you really think that he was so perfect yesterday?

Weight Watchers (By Mendel Kalmenson)

The average thief's deed consists of straightforward dishonesty and evil. The one with the false measures, on the other hand, is professing to the world that he is honest

But I Don't Love Myself! (By Levi Avtzon)

How can I share something I don't have? How can I accept another if I don't accept myself? How can I "love my fellow as myself" if I don't love myself?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Rabbi, Help, I Am Having Nightmares

Rabbi, Help, I Am Having Nightmares
How to get rid of bad dreams in Judaism
By Tzvi Freeman
=======================================

Dear Rabbi,

I have been having nightmares for years, sometimes in batches several days together, about myself, various friends and relatives. They are never true, yet they have greatly tortured and complicated my life. They make me scared, and many times have paralyzed me to inaction.

I would greatly appreciate if you can provide a perspective, or can refer me to someone.

Answer:

There can be many causes to nightmares, but the most significant cause is your thought patterns during the day. Like the Talmud says, "What you think about during the day, that's what you'll dream about at night."[1] Current research supports that: Learn to think in a certain way, and you'll dream that way as well.

Which is good news. Because your way of thinking is something you can control—and change. Just like changing your clothes.

You see, thoughts are really a kind of clothing, as are spoken words and actions. But they are a peculiar sort of clothing.

We wear clothing so we can go to the places we choose to go. If we don't choose to go anywhere, the clothing has nothing to say. Not so the clothing of thoughts and words. With them, if you don't take them somewhere, they will take you somewhere else.[2]

This is really the entire challenge of being an upright human being: to become the master of your own thought, speech and action. To be able to tell a thought, "I'm not interested in having you around," or just slamming the door in its face. Or not even opening the door to begin with. Eventually, the thought will get the message and know not to bother even trying.

This gives us tremendous power. Because thoughts and words are the most powerful things there are. Just as the Almighty created a world with His thoughts and words, human beings mold their own lives with their thoughts and words. A mind that wallows in negative thoughts quickly becomes a mind shrouded in darkness and gloom. Like a dusty window, it does not allow light to enter. And where there is no light, more dust, darkness and gloom conglomerates. Negative energy attracts negative events, and the cycle continues.

But the moment you choose to flush those putrid thoughts away with positive thoughts, they are gone, like darkness is gone with the flick of a light switch.

All I'm saying is to ignore the nightmares, ignore the horrid premonitions, and instead, whenever these things come, find good things to think about. Take extra time to study the Torah and Jewish teachings, then think about what you learned. Think about some good people you know. Visualize all the good things that you await coming into your life. Let good thoughts create a good life.

Before you go to bed, say the Shema prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8E218E5BB5B15D4B7EA22B7A4186068A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], think about the words, think about making your day better. Take a look at the mezuzah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=46F44E6ED1BE34D12E781C0902EB8460&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] on your doorpost; think about how G-d watches over you and cares about you. Cuddle up in bed with some good Jewish reading.

(And, while you're at it, make sure you have mezuzahs on all the doorways that require them, and have them checked by a competent scribe.)

You can replace negative thoughts with good ones—just like you can change lousy clothes for great ones. You can make yourself an optimist. It's your brain, after all. And it's your life.[3]
