Omer: Day 43 - Chessed sheb'Malchut
======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Count "Forty-Four Days to the Omer" Tonight
Tomorrow is the forty-fourth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is forty-four days, which are six weeks and two days, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).
The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CC95064CFCB7FF59AD33AD3DF9E267B9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.
Tonight's Sefirah: Gevurah sheb'Malchut -- "Restraint in Receptiveness"
The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

Today in Jewish History
=======================
· Passing of Samuel (877 BCE)
The prophet Samuel (931-877 BCE) was one of the most important figures in Jewish history; our sages describe him as the equivalent of "Moses and Aaron combined." Samuel was the last of the Shoftim ("Judges") who led the people of Israel in the four centuries between the passing of Joshua and the establishment of the monarchy, and the author of the biblical books of "Judges", "Samuel" and "Ruth [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A2917E01248D4657A3D00C4C2988C919&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]"
Samuel was born in the year 2830 from creation (931 BCE) after his barren mother, Chanah (Hannah), prayed [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DD539A6358A38003B815F2BE4982E993&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for a child at the Sanctuary at Shiloh and pledged, "O L-rd of hosts... If You will give Your maidservant a man child, I shall dedicate him to G-d all the days of his life..." (I Samuel 1:11). At age two, his mother brought him to Shiloh in fulfillment of her vow, where he was raised by Eli the High Priest; shortly thereafter, Samuel had his first prophetic communication (described in I Samuel 3). In 890 BCE, Samuel succeeded Eli as leader of the Jewish people.
After ten years under Samuel's guidance, the people approached him with the request, "Appoint for us a king... like all the nations around us." Samuel disapproved of their request, believing that the people of Israel should be subject only to G-d and not to any mortal king; but G-d instructed him to do as the people ask. Samuel then anointed (879 BCE) Saul as the first king of Israel. When Saul disobeyed G-d during the war on Amalek, Samuel proclaimed David the legitimate king in Saul's stead.
Shortly thereafter, Samuel passed away in his birthplace, Ramah, in the hills of Judah, on the 28th of Iyar of the year 2884 from creation (877 BCE).
· Jerusalem Liberated (1967)
The Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount were liberated during the 1967 Six Day War (see "Today in Jewish History" for Iyar 26 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=31D4CBFA9B0EA1A7B0E2CAA5735663BC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). The day is marked in Israel as "Jerusalem Day."

Today's Laws & Customs

· Ethics of the Fathers: Chapter 5
In preparation for the festival of Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=88664D3280462F40DFAC10DAFC860D4C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], we study one of the six chapters of the Talmud's Ethics of the Fathers ("Avot") on the afternoon of each of the six Shabbatot between Passover and Shavuot; this week we study Chapter Five. (In many communities -- and such is the Chabad custom -- the study cycle is repeated through the summer, until the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah.)

· Count "Forty-Three Days to the Omer" Tonight
Tomorrow is the forty-third day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is forty-three days, which are six weeks and one day, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).
The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=88664D3280462F40DFAC10DAFC860D4C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.
Tonight's Sefirah: Chessed sheb'Malchut -- "Kindness in Receptiveness"

DAILY DOSE: Pushed From Behind
B"H
Pushed From Behind
==================
Nothing limits you, no force that holds you captive—other than a fiction of your imagination.
So you will say, "What, then, of the forces of nature? Of the constraints of a human body? Of the hard reality that slams against me when I attempt to stride through the barriers of life?"
Yes, they are there. But they are not what they seem to be.
They are not there to oppose you, but to carry you. As your soul pulls forward, those barriers force her inward, towards her deepest, strongest self.

Omer: Day 41 - Yesod sheb'Yesod
======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Count "Forty-Two Days to the Omer" Tonight
Tomorrow is the forty-second day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is forty-two days, which are six weeks, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).
The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E219D3541A40BEC83D5A9AB97A34D33A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.
Tonight's Sefirah: Malchut sheb'Yesod -- "Receptiveness in Connection"

· Passing of R. Saadia Gaon (942)
Iyar 26 is the yahrtzeit (anniversary of the passing) of Rabbi Saadia Gaon (892?-942), author of Emunot V'deot, one of the earliest works of Jewish philosophy. ("Gaon" was the title given to the leading Sages of Babylonia in the post-Talmudic period).

· Passing of Ramchal (1747)
Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato (known by the acronym "Ramchal"), philosopher, kabbalist and ethicist, was born in Padua, Italy, in 1707. At a very early age, he began to study Kabbalah under the tutelage of Rabbi Moshe Zacuto, one of the foremost Kabbalists of his generation. While still in his twenties, he authored numerous works of Torah scholarship, including Derech Hashem ("The way of G-d"), a systematic exposition of the fundamentals of Judaism.
In 1735, Luzzatto left his native Italy and, avoiding public life, set up shop as a gem cutter in Amsterdam. His fame nevertheless caught up with him, and in 1740, (at the turn of the Jewish century 5500), he published his most famous work, Mesilat Yesharim ("Path of the Just"). Like many other great men of his age, Luzzatto longed for the Holy Land, and in 1743 he settled in Acco. He was not to enjoy a long stay there, however, and on Iyar 26, 5507 (1747), at the age of 39, he and his entire family died in a plague. According to most traditions, he was buried in Tiberias, next to the tomb of Rabbi Akiva.
· Passing of R. Eizik of Homel (1857)
Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Epstein (1770-1857), who served as the rabbi of the town of Homel in White Russia for 58 years, was a leading figure in the first three generations of Chabad Chassidism. As a young man, he became attracted to the teachings of the first Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=81FA546DE19F28B60B6F3FFF911C2002&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and remained a devoted follower of the 2nd and 3rd Rebbes, Rabbi DovBer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C6BE0A776630335BA10E760CB78E018F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and Rabbi Menachem Mendel [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4660DC3F68F4AC724352AA56A11D6491&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. · Six Day War (1967)
In spring of 1967, the Arab capitals paraded their arms and openly spoke of overrunning the Land of Israel and casting its inhabitants into the sea. The international media was almost unanimous in its belief that the small Jewish state, outflanked and outgunned by its enemies, stood little chance of survival. It seemed that, for the second time in a generation, the world was going to stand by and allow the enemies of the Jewish people slaughter them in the millions.
On Iyar 26 (June 5, 1967), Israel launched a preemptive strike on its southern and northern frontiers. In just six days, the Jewish army defeated five Arab armies on three fronts and liberated territories of its promised homeland amounting to an area greater than its own size, including the old city of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount (see "Today in Jewish History" for Iyar 29 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8F910A633DCC3552E9512658F44B4D03&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).
The openly miraculous nature of Israel's victory spawned a global awakening of Jewish soul, fueling the already present and growing teshuvah movement of return to G-d and Jewish traditions. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9EDB9A86FE4FB0AC6E8F0636E5C38E9E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], of righteous memory, called it a moment of biblical proportions, an "opportunity the likes of which has not been granted for thousands of years." Many thousands of Jews flocked to put on tefillin and pray at the newly liberated Western Wall of the Temple Mount.

(Michael Wolf)
(Michael Wolf).
(Debbie Goard)
(Debbie Goard).

Castle of Vooruit.

When Does the Passover Story End?
By Rochel Chein
=================================
Our retelling of the Exodus on Passover [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=23B0A83E8B5ACD3E9DA28056A4B2B168&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ends when we close the Haggadah text [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=05090BDD14D1B769C63BAFCE4FF64B44&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. But when did the story really end? Leaving Egypt
You might think that the story ended when the Jewish people left Egypt [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1958CDEB19EE372E80ED430C9BEBD71A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nissan, 1313 BCE. On that day the Jews were freed from the land where they had been enslaved [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B52D7E0912016E42B370B66EDD442EA4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. But it was not so easy to leave slavery behind... The Red Sea
The Egyptians pursued the Jews until, a week later, the Jews crossed the Red Sea [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=404938BC4AD9D662A17A5479CC0F318C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and the Egyptians were drowned in their wake. We celebrate this final freedom from our oppressors on the last days of Passover [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E3302B8333817E701EC7453D2D001D4C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. Mount Sinai
The Jews were now free, but freedom without purpose is not true freedom. "Let my people go, that they may serve me," G‑d told Pharaoh through Moses (Exodus 8:1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0146775083E44E0C27B7AB74FEE8995E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). The ultimate purpose of the Exodus was that the Jews should receive the Torah at Mount Sinai 49 days later. The first commandment, "I am the L‑rd, your G‑d, who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage," (Exodus 20:2 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=ADDBBA09C7E1822F784079E78A6FA245&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) makes it clear that the Jewish people were taken out of Egypt only so that they might know G‑d.
Indeed, each year we relive the connection between these events by counting the 49 days from Passover until the holiday of Shavuot, when we commemorate the giving of the Torah. (You can join the count on our Counting the Omer - SefiratHaomer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=72299899CDC8222418428AD80B932542&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] minisite.) The Land of Israel
Now the Jews had the Torah, but they were still homeless and unable to fulfill many of its laws. G‑d used four expressions of redemption to promise Moses that He would redeem the Jews from Egypt. (We commemorate them by drinking four cups of wine at the Passover Seder.) But the four expressions were followed by a fifth promise (Exodus 6:8 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C876D10176C03464D6CFD464C030DAB4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), "And I will bring you to the land…"
Similarly, G‑d told Moses that, "I have descended to rescue them from the hand[s] of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey" (Exodus 3:8 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=62E479F63B27EA7F2BC4ACE6DC043008&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).
Surely it's safe to say that the Exodus narrative ends when the Jews enter the Promised Land after 40 years in the desert? The Holy Temple in Jerusalem
But the first few centuries after the Jewish people entered Israel were tumultuous, and it was only when King Solomon ruled that there was true peace, and "Each man sat under his vine and his fig tree."
Support for the idea that the Exodus concluded with the building of Solomon's Temple [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=BBC44EC0858515CA40AE92B9C9B24B94&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] can be found in the famous "Dayeinu [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F3BBB8BD5750D642A6D962DE3FDE1556&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" song in the Passover Hagaddah reader. The song reviews all the miracles that G‑d did for the Jews after they were saved from Egypt, concluding with the building of the Holy Temple. Not Yet
But Solomon's reign ended, and it was followed by eras of civil strife, the destruction of the first and second Holy Temples, and the dispersal of the Jewish nation in exile. We end the Seder with the prayer, "Next year in Jerusalem," that we may speedily merit the final redemption [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=02FBCA2E6FF80530EC500CB7ADD11525&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and the building of the third Temple.
Concerning the future redemption, the prophet Micah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3B6E22DC0E5B53BB97641E2020E2EE83&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] tells us, "As in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt, I will show you wonders" (7:15 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=677316D0A3ED34D5A2B341BDFEDA3AA9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). Notice that the verse refers to "the days," plural. Leaving Egypt is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. As we say in the Haggadah, "In every generation, a person is obligated to see himself as if he had gone out of Egypt."
Mitzrayim, the Hebrew name for Egypt, is similar to the word meitzarim, which means "boundaries" or "limitations." We each have our own personal limitations and boundaries that prevent us from serving G‑d as well as we might. They may be external circumstances or internal ones, character traits or desires that pull us away from the right path. We experience a personal redemption when we overcome these challenges. The process is an ongoing one, and we are constantly working on ourselves to "leave Egypt" [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FB518AFB70B56318D4DBE53ADD1E8B22&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] once and for all.

When Does the Passover Story End?
By Rochel Chein
=================================
