· Maharal Meets Rudolph II (1592)

Rabbi Judah ben Bezalel Lowe, known as the Maharal of Prague was famous among Jews and non-Jews alike. He was a mystic who was revered for his holiness and Torah scholarship, as well as his proficiency in mathematics, astronomy, and other sciences. Eventually, word of his greatness reached the ears of Emperor Rudolph II.

The Emperor invited the Maharal to his castle on February 23, 1592. There they conversed for one and a half hours, and developed a mutual respect for each other.

Rabbi Judah Lowe made use of his excellent connections with the Emperor, often intervening on behalf of his community when it was threatened by anti-Semitic attacks or oppression.

"Parshat Zachor" is the second of four special readings added during or immediately before the month of Adar (the other three being "Shekalim", "Parah" and "Hachodesh")

· First Dispute Between Two Schools of Torah Thought (1st century CE)

The schools of Shammai and Hillel [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=BB529E4DC40A18C8B54E20CAA380F037&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for the very first time disagreed regarding a case of Jewish law. This occurred around the turn of the 1st century. In the ensuing generations, the schools argued regarding many different laws, until the law was established according to the teachings of the "House of Hillel" -- with the exception of a few instances. According to tradition, following the arrival of the Moshiach [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=AC513DB1CE8F4F188C7A1B9451519F2F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] the law will follow the rulings of the House of Shammai.

All throughout, the members of the two schools maintained friendly relations with each other.

· Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe arrives in America (1940)

After a 12-day sea voyage, the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (1880-1950), disembarked at the New York harbor on the 9th of Adar II of 1940, following his miraculous rescue from Nazi-occupied Warsaw.

DAILY DOSE: Present in Absence

B"H

Present in Absence
==================

The true teacher is most present in his absence.

It is then that all he has taught takes root, grows and blossoms.

The students despairs for his teacher's guidance,
and in that yearning,
the teacher's work bears fruit.

· Oath on Torah Permitted (1674)

In the 1660's the Jewish community of Barbados became established and of considerable importance. The Jewish community, however, had a decided disadvantage in that their testimony was not admissible in court cases due to their refusal to take an oath on a Christian Bible. In October 1669 the Jewish community presented the king a petition requesting permission to take be able to take oaths on the Five Books of Moses, the Jewish Bible.

Several years later, on Wednesday, February 14, 1674, Barbados passed a law granting the Jewish community the permission they requested.

· Jews Enabled to Serve in Public Office in Maryland (1825)

In 1715, the Crown Colony of Maryland enacted a law requiring any citizen who wished to hold public office to take an oath of abjuration, which contained the words, "upon the true faith of a Christian." In 1776, the new constitution of the State of Maryland reaffirmed this law, requiring any oath of office to contain a declaration of belief in the Christian religion.

In the decades that followed, the struggle to repeal this law attracted national attention.

On February 26, 1825 an act "for the relief of the Jews in Maryland," was passed by Maryland's House of Delegates. The bill allowed every Jewish citizen to take an oath which professes his belief in a "future State of Rewards and Punishments, in the stead of the declaration now required by the Constitution and form of Government of this State."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Should I Serve G‑d With Marijuana?

Should I Serve G‑d With Marijuana?
By Tzvi Freeman
==================================

Dear Rabbi,

I was wondering how the Jewish, and especially chassidic, mystical teachings would regard marijuana as a way of getting closer to G-d.

Of course, there is the obvious fact that marijuana is against the law. But there are obviously some exceptions to what can be done for spiritual purposes that normally would be against the law.

Answer:

Before your soul came down into this world, it was high. The ultimate high. So high, there was only one way she could get higher: by squeezing herself into a blood-and-bones body and coming to live down here on planet Earth.

Here's the game plan: Soul descends and invests within walking, talking slab of collagen matrices (a.k.a. body). Body thinks for itself and doesn't want to listen to soul. Soul feels trapped, oppressed, coerced into doing things it can't stand. Soul reaches within to find hidden powers. Soul works with body. Gradually, soul refines body. Body becomes soul-like. Soul discovers its quintessential being.

That's why the best way I know to get high is by sinking my head into a deep pot of chassidic teachings, especially a juicy Chabad-guided meditation (known as a maamar), thought processes to bring Kabbalistic teachings into the realm of human intellect, teachings about higher worlds, the sefirot and angels that seemed so "out there." I let my soul try every way it can to bring this into my gray matter brain and to get my blood-filled heart pumping over it.

At the very least, I'm sweating it—all on my own power. And that's where the high comes from: from reaching deep within, all on your own.

Who knows, maybe marijuana and other psychotropics open up the doors of perception for the soul. Maybe it gets a short relief from sweating away at its mission down here. But it's a high that lies. And for the soul, it makes the long journey down here into a bad trip. "This is high?" she says. "For this I could have stayed above and been much, much higher!"

The real high can happen only by working with that body, not escaping it; by prying open the doors of your perception step by step, stretching its limits a little more each day; engaging your senses, limbs, heart, mind and stomach in beautiful, divine acts daily. That's the path to getting high and staying there.

Like Euclid said about learning geometry, there's no king's highway to spiritual enlightenment. Or, to paraphrase Rabbi Ben Hei Hei's oft-quoted words in the Mishnah, "No pain, no gain."[1]

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=57A93AB305A98F6CB994C163B3A61582&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], of righteous memory, once answered someone with your question, saying that the way of Judaism is "that the person should be the master over his or her self, and enslavement of any sort is wrong." Psychedelics, the Rebbe pointed out, don't provide that mastery. They usually provide the opposite.[2]

So here's my recommendation: Get hooked on a one-to-one situation learning deep Torah teachings, and get real high. If you don't have anyone in your neighborhood, you can click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EAFF26B668981D0FAB1A448329D22D4E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] to set up a study partner.

DAILY DOSE: Birthdays

B"H

Birthdays
=========

You existed before, in your mother's womb.
There you were comfortable, warm and cared for.

But you left that place behind.
You entered a world, cold and harsh.
The mere act of living became a struggle.
You cried.

Yet, every year you celebrate that day.

Why?

Because the day you were born,
you were no longer the extension of another being.
The day you came to this world,
you were empowered to give the world something
that neither your parents
nor your teachers
could give to you.

Celebrate your birthday.
And take time to think:
Was I really born?
What have I given the world that the world did not give to me?

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Burial Society Day

The Chevrah Kadisha [ # ] (Jewish Burial Societies) hold their annual get-together and feast on Adar 7th. This is based on the tradition that G-d Himself buried Moses on this day -- granting them a respite from their labors.

· Sanctification of the Moon

Once a month, as the moon waxes in the sky, we recite a special blessing called Kiddush Levanah, "the sanctification of the moon," praising the Creator for His wondrous work we call astronomy.

Kiddush Levanah is recited after nightfall, usually on Saturday night. The blessing is concluded with songs and dancing, because our nation is likened to the moonâ€"as it waxes and wanes, so have we throughout history. When we bless the moon, we renew our trust that very soon, the light of Gâ€'d's presence will fill all the earth and our people will be redeemed from exile.

Though Kiddush Levanah can be recited as early as three days after the moon's rebirth, the kabbalah tells us it is best to wait a full week, till the seventh of the month. Once 15 days have passed, the moon begins to wane once more and the season for saying the blessing has passed.

· The Spanish Inquisition (1481)

The Inquisition was created in the twelfth century to find "Christian heretics" who would be punished or killed. Eventually, Jews too were open to such charges of heresy, simply for being Jewish; and torture was routinely used to extract "confessions." Over the years, the inquisition, which operated with Papal consent, spread to many countries.

In 1481 the Inquisition began to function in Spain to expose the secret Jews, known as the Anusim or Marranos. This Inquisition was anti-Jewish more than in any previous countries. The first public sentencing and burning alive of six marrano men and one woman by the Spanish Inquisition was held on this date in Seville in Southern Spain.

Following the start of the Spanish Inquisition many Jews fled Spain (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=89340C5701A2C40A2A7CC2EACA5E7099&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Sivan 4).

Daily Quote
===========

"Love is strong as death" (Song of Songs 8:6) -- this is the love with which Jacob loved Joseph... "Envy is harsh as the grave" (ibid.) -- this is the envy of the brothers to Joseph. What can love achieve in face of envy?

General Overview:

In last week's Torah reading, Terumah, we read the details of the construction of the Tabernacle, the sanctuary in the desert. This week's Parshah, Tetzaveh, we discover the special garments worn by the priests and high priest when serving in the Tabernacle. Following that, we read G‑d's instructions to Moses regarding the seven-day inauguration for the Tabernacle. The portion concludes with a description of one of the vessels of the Tabernacle--the Incense Altar.

Laws Relating to Clothing (By Aryeh Citron)

The Oil of the Soul (By Rochel Holzkenner)

Moses' task of nurturing his flock's faith expresses itself in its fullest at those times when we are "crushed." For it is then that the essential faith kicks into highest gear and activates incredible luminescent displays of commitment to G-d.
