· Hebron Massacre (1929)

67 Jewish men, women and children were slaughtered, and scores wounded, raped and maimed, by their Arab neighbors in the city of Hebron, who rioted for three days amid cries of "Slaughter the Jews." The survivors fled to Jerusalem, and the ancient Jewish community of Hebron, which had lived in relative peace in the city for hundreds of years, was not revived until after Israel's capture of Hebron in the 1967 Six Day war.

Yukio Nishimura

(Gianluca Traina)

(Alice Bartlett)

Azuma Makoto

East Village

(Maurice Heesen)

(Gerry Barry)

VIVID Sydney festival

Bernardita Marambio Bello

DAILY DOSE: Forget Punishment

B"H

Forget Punishment
=================

Worry can always provide reason. Maybe G-d is out to punish you. Maybe you don't deserve to be saved from the mess you've gotten into. Maybe an ugly mess is the only way He has to provide for you.

That's not called trust. Trust means you have not a shade of doubt that He will deliver. No matter what.

The heavens above mirror the earth below.
Trust in Him and He will fulfill your trust.

Today is: Friday, Av 15, 5772

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Joyous Day; Tachnun Omitted

Because of the joyous events which occurred on this day (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=566558B8F39F6BA8E80FAAB9F8D62774&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]"), our sages regarded the 15th of Av to be one of the two most auspicious days on the Jewish calendar (the other being Yom Kippur--Talmud, Taanit 26b). Nevertheless, no special Av 15 observances or celebrations are ordained by Halachah (Torah law) or custom, other than the omission of the tachnun (confession of sins) and similar portions from the daily prayers, as is the case with all festive dates.

· Increase Torah Study

Beginning on the 15th of Av one should increase one's study of Torah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9FAE238C44610BE3402F15AD02E0E2E5&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], since at this time of the year the nights begin to grow longer and "the night was created for study" (Talmud and Codes).

· End of Dying in Desert (1274 BCE)

In wake of the incident of the "Spies," [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7E19840499FF0DB60C740486C5EEFBC0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] in which the generation that came out of Egypt under Moses' leadership demonstrated their unpreparedness for the task of conquering and settling the Holy Land, G-d decreed that entire generation would die out in the desert (see "Today in Jewish History" for Av 8 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2FF6DCFC58EB2B88F54F47E4BC0793F0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and Av 9 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8540DE52D858BB1DACE435CFE5EAF175&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). After 38 years of wandering through the wilderness the dying finally ended, and a new generation of Jews stood ready to enter the Holy Land. It was the 15th of Av of the year 2487 from creation (1274 BCE)

· Ban on Inter-Tribal Marriage Lifted (13th century BCE)

In order to ensure the orderly division of the Holy Land between the twelve tribes of Israel, restrictions had been placed on marriages between members of two different tribes. A woman who had inherited tribal lands from her father was forbidden to marry out of her tribe, lest her children -- members of their father's tribe -- cause the transfer of land from one tribe to another by inheriting her estate (Number 36). This ordinance was binding only on the generation that conquered and settled the Holy Land during the 14-year period 2488-2503 from creation (1273-1258 BCE); when the restriction was lifted, on the 15th of Av, the event was considered a cause for celebration and festivity.

· Tribe of Benjamin Re-Admitted (circa 1228 BCE)

Av 15 was the day on which the tribe of Benjamin, which had been excommunicated for its behavior in the incident of the "Concubine at Givah," was readmitted into the community of Israel (as related in Judges 19-21). The event occurred during the judgeship of Othniel ben Knaz, who led the people of Israel in the years 2533-2573 from creation (1228-1188 BCE).

· Jeroboam's Roadblocks Removed (574 BCE)

Upon the division of the Holy Land into two kingdoms following the death of King Solomon in the year 2964 from creation (797 BCE), Jeroboam ben Nebat, ruler of the breakaway Northern Kingdom of Israel, set up roadblocks to prevent his citizens from making the thrice-yearly pilgrimage to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, capital of the Southern Kingdom of Judea. These were finally removed more than 200 years later by Hosea ben Eilah, the last king of the Northern Kingdom, on Av 15, 3187 (574 BCE).

· Betar Dead Buried (148 CE)

The fortress of Betar was the last holdout of the Bar Kochba rebellion. When Betar fell [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B7484BFF2FC9E647CBA11CE53BD83863&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] on the 9th of Av, 3893 (133 CE), Bar Kochba and many thousands of Jews were killed; the Romans massacred the survivors of the battle with great cruelty and would not even allow the Jews to bury their dead. For 15 years their remains were left scattered on the battlefield. When the dead of Betar were finally brought to burial on Av 15 of the year 3908 from creation (148 CE), an additional blessing (HaTov VehaMeitiv) was added to the "Grace After Meals" in commemoration.

· Matchmaking Day

In ancient Israel, it was the custom that on the 15th of Av "the daughters of Jerusalem would go out in borrowed linen garments (so as not to embarrass those without beautiful clothes of their own)... and dance in the vineyards" and "whoever did not have a wife would go there" to find himself a bride (Talmud, Taanit 31a).

· "The Day of the Breaking of the Ax"

When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, the annual cutting of firewood for the altar was concluded on the 15th of Av. The event was celebrated with feasting and rejoicing, as is the custom upon the conclusion of a holy endeavor, and included a ceremonial breaking of the axes which gave the day its name.

Studying Rashi: Parshat Va'etchanan

The Torah describes the revelation at Sinai by saying: "You have been shown, in order to know that the Lord He is G-d; there is none else besides Him." (Deuteronomy 4:35) Rashi explains that the way G-d showed the people is that "He tore open the heaven and earth." How are we to understand this unusual imagery?

Shema and Bearing Witness (Aaron L. Raskin)
Letters and Numbers of Torah - Va'etchanan

In the verse "Hear O Israel, the Lord our G-d, the Lord is One," (Deuteronomy 6:4) the letter Ayin in the word Shema (Hear) and the letter Daled in the word Echad (One) are both unusually large. Ayin and Dalet spell Ayd (witness) to teach us that when we recite the Shema we should bear witness to G-d's Oneness.

Desired Education (Correspondence by Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, The Lubavitcher Rebbe)

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What Is the Midpoint of the Torah?

What Is the Midpoint of the Torah?
By Yehuda Shurpin
===================================

Dear Rabbi,

What is the middle letter of the Torah? I read that it was the letter vav of the word gachon (גחון) in Leviticus (11:42 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=31BE9EF705699F8FADFEEC111CFECB5C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). My friend says that that is incorrect. Can you help us out?

Answer:

Actually, you and your friend are both correct and incorrect.

The Talmud discusses various halfway points in the Torah, and lists the vav in the word gachon as the middle letter:

Because of this reason, the early sages were called soferim, "those who count," for they counted all the letters of the Torah scroll. They used to say: The letter vav of the word gachon represents the midpoint of the letters of the Torah scroll. The words darosh darash (from Leviticus 10:16 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8AF6ECE2CB0442ABCB8B0B6691B5BE6B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) represent the midpoint of the words of the Torah. The verse which begins with the word vehitgalach (from Leviticus 13:33 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F278962FBEDEB26D970893481D65690E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ])represents the midpoint of the Torah's verses. In the verse yecharsemenah chazir miyaar (Psalms 80:14 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=37EB38F23BE7984A7868D98B5FB9EB99&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), the letter ayin of the word miyaar (מיער) is the midpoint of the book of Psalms. The verse vehu rachum yechaper avon (ibid. 78:38 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1A7F4BE6D6CDF2B16E54620C3EDEBA56&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) represents the midpoint of the verses in Psalms.[1]

However, a simple count of the letters and words of the Torah scroll and Psalms reveals that the entire list of the Talmud is incorrect![2]

A Torah scroll contains 304,805 letters, which means that the midpoint would be the 152,403rd letter; but there are 157,236 letters until the letter vav in the word gachon. In order for that to be the middle letter of the Torah, there would have to be an additional 9,667 letters in the Torah scroll!

There is a fascinating explanation, by Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Zilber, of this cryptic statement of the Talmud. While most of the letters of the Torah are written in the standard script, he says, there are certain letters that are different. Some are written in an unusual fashion, while others are bigger or smaller than the standard letters of the Torah. If one were to count all the small and large letters in a standard Torah scroll, one would find that there are 16 or 17 of these letters (depending on whether we count the truncated vav in Numbers 25:12 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9EB6D8441DEAA0BCC404A77BEDE69166&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].[3]) Of these, the ninth, i.e., the middle one, is the vav of gachon. In other words, the Talmud was not referring to the vav of gachon as the middle of all the letters of the Torah scroll; rather, it was referring to it as the middle of all the unusually large and small letters in the Torah scroll.[4]

This explanation is strengthened by the fact that in Psalms there are five or seven (depending on the list used) letters that are unusually large, small, or "hanging" above or below the other letters, and (according to both lists) the ayin of miyaar is the middle letter.[5]

Similarly, there are 77 instances of double words in the Torah scroll, for example, "Abraham, Abraham" (Genesis 25:19 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F380B8163D36F917F5B8527D1C09A62B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) and "Noah, Noah" (Genesis 6:9 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=412ABC73B7286A1D3B6514FC81E9FBEB&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]). Of those 77 cases, the 39th instance, the middle one, is darosh, darash. So while it is not the middle of all the words in the Torah scroll, it is the middle of all the unusual double words found in the Torah scroll.[6]

As for Psalms 78:38 being the middle verse of the Book of Psalms: it is true that the middle of Psalms is really two verses earlier. However, since the two preceding verses discuss the dishonor and shame of the Jewish people,[7] the Talmud refrained from singling out those verses and instead chose the nearest verse, which talks about how G-d is all-merciful despite our iniquities.

FOOTNOTES
1.Talmud, Kiddushin 30a.
2.The Talmud also addresses the question of the number of verses in the Torah itself. There is a disagreement as to where certain verses start and end; an examples is cited there of one verse which some held should really have been three separate verses.
3.This number of 16 or 17 is based on the Masoretic text. Since there are nowadays many editions of the Pentateuch that follow various lists of abnormal letters in the Torah, the following is the list that is being used:1) Beit, Genesis 1:1; 2) hei, Genesis 2:4; 3) kaf, Genesis 23:2; 4) kuf, Genesis 27:46; 5) nun, Exodus 34:7; 6) reish, Exodus 34:14; 7) aleph, Leviticus 1:1; 8) mem, Leviticus 6:2; 9) vav, Leviticus 11:42; 10) gimmel, Leviticus 13:33; 11) yud, Numbers 14:17; *vav, Numbers 25:12; 12) ayin, Deuteronomy 6:4; 13) dalet, Deuteronomy 6:4; 14) lamed, Deuteronomy 29:27; 15) hei, Deuteronomy 32:6; 16) yud, Deuteronomy 32:18.The question of whether to include the truncated vav in the count has to do with whether, when we say that the vav of gachon is in the middle, it is exactly in the middle, or there an even number, and then it is either the last letter of the first half or the first letter of the second half of the Torah. The Talmud itself (ibid.) asks this question. Rabbi Zilber explains that the reason not to count the truncated vav is because it is a unique, one-of-a-kind letter.
4.Shmaatin, issue 43, cited by Rabbi Menachem Kasher in Torah Sheleimah, vol. 28, ch. 12.Rabbi Yosef Tov Elem (cited in Machzor Vitry, vol. 2, p. 683) has a different tradition of small and large letters. However, according to that tradition there are 32 such letters, and the 16th is the vav of gachon, making it still in the middle.
5.The list from Psalms is as follows: 1) yud, 24:4; 2) hei, 77:8; 3) zayin, 77:18; 4) ayin, 80:14; 5) kaf, 80:16; 6) kuf, 84:4; 7) hei, 107:11.
6.He explains that the double words lech lecha (Genesis 12:1) and sham sam (Exodus 15:25) are not counted, for while they are spelled the same, the two words do not share the same root and have a different meaning.
7.Psalms 78:36–37: "They beguiled Him with their mouth, and with their tongue they lied to Him. Their heart was not sincere with Him; they were not faithful in His covenant."
