Chanukah Day 5

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Kindle Six Chanukah Lights tonight

In commemoration of the miracle of Chanukah (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FE1202A68EB268EF77F525F369A96723&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Kislev 25) we kindle the Chanukah lights -- oil lamps or candles -- each evening of the eight-day festival, increasing the number of lights each evening. Tonight we kindle six lights. (In the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall; this evening, then, commences the 6th day of Chanukah).

The icon below displays the ideal Chanukah lighting time for your location; the lighting can be done, however, later in the evening as well. (If no time is displayed, click on icon to set your location.)

Additional Chanukah observances and customs are listed below:

· Hallel & Al HaNissim

Special prayers of thanksgiving -- Hallel (in its full version) and Al HaNissim -- are added to the daily prayers and Grace After Meals on all eight days of Chanukah. Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted for the duration of trhe festival.

· Latkes, Sufganiot & Dairy Foods

On Chanukah we eat foods fried in oil -- such as latkes (potato cakes) and sufganiot (doughnuts) -- in commemoration of the miracle of the oil.

It is also customary to eat dairy foods in commemoration of Judith's heroic deed [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=22C968446E97283F6111D709BA7D9AB2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Dreidel

It is customary to play dreidel -- a game played with a spinning top inscribed with the Hebrew letters Nun, Gimmel, Hei and Shin, which spell the phrase Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, "a great miracle happened there." (It is said that when the Greeks forbade the study of Torah, Jewish children continued the study with their teachers in caves and cellars; when the agents of the king were seen approaching, the children would hide their scrolls and start to play with spinning tops...)

· Chanukah Gelt

It is an age-old custom to distribute gifts of Chanukah gelt ("Chanukah money [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4FE1215B1A1A93E425DDE8CBD61C73F6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]") to children on Chanukah. (It was the custom of the rebbes of Chabad-Lubavitch to give Chanukah gelt to their children and other family members on the fourth or fifth night of Chanukah; more recently, however, the Lubavitcher Rebbe encouraged the giving of Chanukah gelt every day of the festival -- except for Shabbat, when handling money is forbidden.)

· 5th Day of Chanukah Miracle (139 BCE)

On the 25th of Kislev in the year 3622 from creation, the Maccabees liberated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, after defeating the vastly more numerous and powerful armies of the Syrian-Greek king Antiochus IV, who had tried to forcefully uproot the beliefs and practices of Judaism from the people of Israel. The victorious Jews repaired, cleansed and rededicated the Temple to the service of G-d. But all the Temple's oil had been defiled by the pagan invaders; when the Jews sought to light the Temple's menorah (candelabra), they found only one small cruse of ritually pure olive oil. Miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new, pure oil could be obtained. In commemoration, the Sages instituted the 8-day festival of Chanukah, on which lights are kindled nightly to recall and publicize the miracle.

Daily Quote
===========

It is written (Psalms 119:98): "From my foes have You given me wisdom." From the negative tendencies a person detects in his natural traits, he can become wise and know how to handle the correction of these traits, and how to subordinate his powers in the service of G-d.

Today is: Shabbat, Kislev 28, 5772
Chanukah Day 4

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Blessing the New Month

This Shabbat is Shabbat Mevarchim ("the Shabbat that blesses" the new month): a special prayer is recited blessing the Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") of upcoming month of Tevet, which falls on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Prior to the blessing, we announce the precise time of the molad, the "birth" of the new moon. Click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F685D24EDD3BEF44E72AA62CEC4E7423&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] for molad times.

It is a Chabad custom to recite the entire book of Psalms before morning prayers, and to conduct farbrengens (chassidic gatherings) in the course of the Shabbat.

· Kindle Five Chanukah Lights after nightfall

In commemorartion of the miracle of Chanukah (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6D366413151A2B805CF26B1B954A5FFC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Kislev 25) we kindle the Chanukah lights -- oil lamps or candles -- each evening of the eight-day festival, increasing the number of lights each evening. Tonight we kindle five lights. (In the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall; this evening, then, commences the 5th day of Chanukah).

IMPORTANT: Because of the prohibition to kindle fire on Shabbat, the Chanukah lights must be lit after after the Havdalah service marking the end of Shabbat at nightfall. The time for Shabbat's end and Chanukah lighting is displayed below. (If no time is displayed, click on icon to set your location.)

DAILY DOSE: The Choice

B"H

The Choice
==========

Ultimately, Darkness will meet her end. Our choice lies only in the form of her demise:

If we meet nothing but success at every stage of our mission, Darkness will helplessly surrender, delivering to our hand all the sparks of G-dliness that she has so jealously held.

When we fail, however, we have taken upon ourselves to wrestle Darkness face-to-face to her utter annihilation. She will not surrender, but no trace will be left of her. She herself will be transformed to light.

And there is no greater light than Darkness herself transformed to light.

Chanukah Day 3

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Kindle Four Chanukah Lights before sunset

In commemorartion of the miracle of Chanukah (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6945CFF264B3E13C97B0E3CB527422F9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for Kislev 25) we kindle the Chanukah lights -- oil lamps or candles -- each evening of the eight-day festival, increasing the number of lights each evening. For tonight, we kindle four lights. (In the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall; this evening, then, commences the 4th day of Chanukah).

IMPORTANT: Because of the prohibition to kindle fire on Shabbat, the Chanukah lights must be lit before lighting the Shabbat candles, and should contain enough oil (or the candle be big enough) to burn until 30 minutes after nightfall. Candle lighting time for your location is displayed below. (If no time is displayed, click on icon to set your location.)

For a more detailed guide to Chanukah lighting click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F8F328926A97C7CF0558B15B5FD42443&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. For text and audio of the blessings recited before lighting, click here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B4514029DB848050BF6A3918CE300117&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

It is also customary to eat dairy foods in commemoration of Judith's heroic deed [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=00286393FA4D84EC6DB6AE6F25D1876C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

It is an age-old custom to distribute gifts of Chanukah gelt ("Chanukah money [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3DB1CF314163CFF2FCF82BCB6639FCC0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]") to children on Chanukah.

Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Flood rains cease (2105 BCE)

The forty days and nights of rainfall which covered the face of earth with water in Noah's time ended on Kislev 27 of the year 1656 from creation (2105 BCE. The flood itself lasted a full year, as related in Genesis 6-8).

Links: Chronology of the Flood; The Torah's account [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=AECC81E3B21ECB735F1EBA1FE53E0EF1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (Parshat Noach); The 40-Day Mikvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EB18C9CA4987BAD4CFB5A9F2A48E456A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]

· 3rd Day of Chanukah Miracle (139 BCE)

· Passing of R. Chaim of Tchernovitz (1817)

Rabbi Chaim of Tchernovitz (1760-1817) was a disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E7960BA4C87D17755E146E0ACB0FC170&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and of Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EEEDE6EC41446A20FDA72A568F91BF64&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. He authored Be'er Mayim Chayim ("Well of Living Waters"), a commentary on Torah. Rabbi Chaim passed away on the 3rd day of Chanukah.

· 2nd liberation of R. Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1800)

Two years after his arrest and liberation in 1798 (see entries for "Kislev 19 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=47A7A2B5CF4A1D8D6A281DE0AB33B8B0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" and here [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=64C5E1B391E1FE7CAFA79B040700A220&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (founder of Chabad, 1745-1812) was arrested a second time; again, the charges were that his teachings undermined the imperial authority of the Czar. His second incarceration was less severe than the first; yet Chassidim mark the anniversary of his release on the third day of Chanukah with farbrengens (Chassidic gatherings) and the study of his teachings.

According to other versions of the story, the liberation occurred on the fifth day of Chanukah. Apparently the liberation happened in two stages.

The Rebbe and the Public Menorah

Erect a Chanukah Menorah on Public Property?
A letter from The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson
By Dovid Zaklikowski
=========================================================

Debate raged in a small New Jersey town. It was 1980 and a large Chanukah menorah had been erected in the garden of the court house in Hackensack, New Jersey. The menorah attracted Jews and heightened the holiday awareness and celebration in the area.

By that time, public menorahs were on display in cities across the United States of America, including one in the nation's capital, in front of the White House.

The following year, the Teaneck Jewish Community Council reached a unanimous decision opposing the erection of a similar menorah outside City Hall, which the local Chabad rabbi was planning to erect. They planned to raise the issue with the town council.

The local Chabad emissary, responded that nonetheless he is planning to erect the menorah as permitted by American law. He continued to dedicate his time to planning the project.

Larry Jaffe, at the time a JCC board member, wrote a warm letter to the Rebbe, on behalf of the entire board, explaining their position.

Chanukah Fun and Games

It is customary on Chanukah to organize special events for small children. It is also the custom to make family Chanukah parties – for even the Rebbes of Chabad would make a gathering for their children on one of the nights of Chanukah. Customary activities include Chanukah Gelt, playing Dreidel, and Chanukah plays where the children dress up as Maccabees.

Why the Discrepancy in the Chanukah Prayer?
By Yehuda Shurpin
===========================================

Dear Rabbi,

I am a goldsmith who also makes contemporary Judaica, and I often use Hebrew text on my Judaica pieces. Currently, I'm working on a new menorah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9A06A75A871030E79D6D45D206D2F381&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] candelabrum on which I will add the prayer of Haneirot Halalu [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4877B903434B12EE669B013C9B552926&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], which we say after lighting the menorah on Chanukah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2AC29C725E1E8390B655AB58D99ACB86&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

I noticed that there seems to be a discrepancy in the Chabad [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1DA48CB2967632F454FFAE251A555A23&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] version of this prayer. We start off by saying, "We kindle these lights to commemorate the salvations [saving acts], miracles and wonders which You have performed for our forefathers," but then when it come to the ending, we reverse the order and say, "in order to offer thanks and praise to Your great Name for Your miracles, for Your wonders and for Your salvations."

Is there a reason for this discrepancy?

Answer:

When analyzing the prayer, it becomes apparent that we are not just commemorating one miracle; we are commemorating three general categories of miracles performed by G-d in those days: salvations, miracles and wonders.

But first, a short refresher on the Chanukah miracle story [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2CE7B490D2921E452B6B361544F453B8&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is in order. The Chanukah miracle began in a small town in Israel called Modiin. The Greeks had enacted a series of harsh decrees [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1FFFF9A7D29C03757F58B15053E763A7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] against the Jews. Jewish worship was forbidden, and the Jewish scrolls were confiscated and burned. Sabbath [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7AF43FD0D8C039ABA795DF4042BC0B6B&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] rest, circumcision [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=85A08F688086D633E75399BE6599B202&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and the dietary laws [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=F71AA8843B271AB5C08D354819EE9A21&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] were prohibited under penalty of death.

In order to further perpetuate the eradication of the Jewish religion, the Greeks would visit Jewish towns and villages to forcefully get them to go against G-d and his Torah. Thus the Greeks came to Modiin, the town in which the old and revered priest Mattityahu [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C7AE1B8BFB6CF3C9289BA8ED933DE6B9&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and his sons lived. The Greeks set up an altar and wished to sacrifice a swine upon it. Mattityahu and his sons resisted and defeated the Greek forces in a battle.

This initial revolt grew into a full-fledged war against the Greeks. Antiochus, the Greek-Syrian emperor, sent in huge numbers of troops to quash the rebellion. The Maccabees [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DC003E309A438E7FEEE9D9A572AB2658&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the Jewish fighters, were greatly outnumbered. Nevertheless, they were victorious.

After the victory, the Maccabees entered the Holy Temple [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1D121F700D7D8F704CBBECD3CDB16F17&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] which the Greeks had defiled. When it came time to kindle the menorah candelabrum, they could not find a single untouched flask of oil that had not been defiled by the Greeks. After searching, they were able to find "one flask of oil with the high priest stamp left intact."[1] Later, there was yet another miracle: this one flask of oil, which should have lasted only one day, burned for eight days.

We start off the Chanukah prayer by recounting in chronological order the miracles that were performed for us: "We kindle these lights to commemorate the salvations [saving acts], miracles and wonders which You have performed for our forefathers."

Let's take a closer look at these three types of miracles:

Salvations: When there is a conflict in which either side may win, one needs G-d's "salvation" to be certain of victory. However, it is precisely because one side could win equally as well as the other that salvation looks like a natural event. This was the case with the initial victory in the town of Modiin where there wasn't an overly large Greek army.

Miracles: A "miracle" is something that transcends nature and runs counter to what should have happened under normal circumstances. When a tiny, weak and ill-equipped band of civilians defeats an overwhelmingly superior army, that is a miracle.

Wonders: "Wonders" are events that are removed from the normal course of events and therefore evoke wonder in those who witness them. However, many would still consider them natural. In the Chanukah story, the "wonder" was finding the one flask of uncontaminated oil.[2] For although it is completely normal for them to have overlooked one flask, it is still "wondrous" that one flask was found buried (which in itself is wondrous, since they weren't normally buried).

However, when it comes to the end of the prayer, we mention the miracles in the order in which they cause us to "offer thanks and praise to Your great Name." The order is, "Your miracles, Your wonders and Your salvations."

We first thank and praise G-d for His open miracles, those events that everyone recognizes come from G-d. Then, after some contemplation, we realize that even events that we merely categorize as wonders, because they can be attributed to natural causes, come from G-d. Finally, we come to the realization that we must thank G-d even for those things which are neither open miracles nor even wonders, those things which occur "naturally"—salvations. For nature itself is really G-dliness.[3]
