· Fast Day
Because of the holiness of Shabbat, the fast of Tammuz 17 is this year postponed to today, Tammuz 18. We refrain from all food and drink from "daybreak" (about an hour before sunrise, depending on location) until nightfall. Special prayers and Torah readings are added to the day's services.
The fast day mourns the breaching of Jerusalem's walls and the other tragic events that occurred on Tammuz 17--see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=05AAB06AE5CA716200504D880C54DC36&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for that date--and repenting and rectifying their causes.

· Fast Day Postponed
To mourn the breaching of Jerusalem's walls and the other tragic events that occurred on this day (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D8D09A60D914B2878BC67DC2676D45AD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]") and repent and rectify their causes, Tammuz 17 was instituted as a fast day. This year, however, the actual fast is held tomorrow (Sunday), due to the holiness of Shabbat [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8D4BCB9A29DC5464ECE455FE2DBC82B4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]
· "The Three Weeks" Begin
The 17th of Tammuz also marks the beginning of The Three Weeks period of mourning which culminates on the 9th of Av, commemorating the conquest of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish people.
Weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed. (Consult the Code of Jewish Law (Shulchan Aruch) or a qualified rabbi regarding specific proscriptions).
The Lubavitcher Rebbe urged that the Three Weeks should be a time of increased giving of charity and Torah study (in keeping with the verse (Isaiah 1:27), "Zion shall be redeemed by law, and her returnees by charity"), particularly the study of those portions of Torah that deal with the laws and the deeper significance of the Holy Temple.

· Moses Breaks Tablets (1313 BCE)
The Talmud (Taanit 28b) lists five tragic events in Jewish history that occurred on Tammuz 17, on account of which a fast was instituted on this day (see Laws & Customs [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E5A5593CD2BC8DDCAF1BC5AE726EA000&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]").
The first of these occurred in 1313 BCE, forty days after the Giving of the Torah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=54C026EF46493AE8F069FC326318D596&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] on Sivan 6. Upon descending Mount Sinai and witnessing Israel's worship of the Golden Calf (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EF9187A52AF5695EB08FD2C2C3C828D7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for yesterday, Tammuz 16), Moses smashed the Tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments which he was carrying down from the mountain.

· Jerusalem Walls Breached (69 CE)
The other three national tragedies mourned on Tammuz 17 are connected with the Roman conquest of Jerusalem and their destruction of the Second Temple in the year 69 CE:
--The walls of the besieged city of Jerusalem were breached.
--The Roman general Apostomus burned the Torah and,
--placed an idol [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=12310A2E0A1CA6F1056414AC38AA60BA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] in the Holy Temple.
The fighting in Jerusalem continued for three weeks until the 9th of Av [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CC6D4CC5537D43788A9ABB82C9256674&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], when the Holy Temple [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D0B4B5C473557CB3FF2E6B749628776E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] was set aflame.

· Fast Day Postponed
To mourn the breaching of Jerusalem's walls and the other tragic events that occurred on this day (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D8D09A60D914B2878BC67DC2676D45AD&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]") and repent and rectify their causes, Tammuz 17 was instituted as a fast day. This year, however, the actual fast is held tomorrow (Sunday), due to the holiness of Shabbat [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8D4BCB9A29DC5464ECE455FE2DBC82B4&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]
· "The Three Weeks" Begin
The 17th of Tammuz also marks the beginning of The Three Weeks period of mourning which culminates on the 9th of Av, commemorating the conquest of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish people.
Weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed. (Consult the Code of Jewish Law (Shulchan Aruch) or a qualified rabbi regarding specific proscriptions).
The Lubavitcher Rebbe urged that the Three Weeks should be a time of increased giving of charity and Torah study (in keeping with the verse (Isaiah 1:27), "Zion shall be redeemed by law, and her returnees by charity"), particularly the study of those portions of Torah that deal with the laws and the deeper significance of the Holy Temple.

· Moses Breaks Tablets (1313 BCE)
The Talmud (Taanit 28b) lists five tragic events in Jewish history that occurred on Tammuz 17, on account of which a fast was instituted on this day (see Laws & Customs [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E5A5593CD2BC8DDCAF1BC5AE726EA000&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]").
The first of these occurred in 1313 BCE, forty days after the Giving of the Torah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=54C026EF46493AE8F069FC326318D596&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] on Sivan 6. Upon descending Mount Sinai and witnessing Israel's worship of the Golden Calf (see "Today in Jewish History [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EF9187A52AF5695EB08FD2C2C3C828D7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" for yesterday, Tammuz 16), Moses smashed the Tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments which he was carrying down from the mountain.

· Jerusalem Walls Breached (69 CE)
The other three national tragedies mourned on Tammuz 17 are connected with the Roman conquest of Jerusalem and their destruction of the Second Temple in the year 69 CE:
--The walls of the besieged city of Jerusalem were breached.
--The Roman general Apostomus burned the Torah and,
--placed an idol [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=12310A2E0A1CA6F1056414AC38AA60BA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] in the Holy Temple.
The fighting in Jerusalem continued for three weeks until the 9th of Av [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CC6D4CC5537D43788A9ABB82C9256674&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], when the Holy Temple [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D0B4B5C473557CB3FF2E6B749628776E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] was set aflame.

Mutually Exclusive

Wherever Light spreads, it does not find Darkness. For Light, Darkness does not exist.
Wherever Darkness spreads, it does not find Light. For Darkness, Light does not exist.
In the Time To Come, the two shall coincide and know one another in perfect union. At that nexus we will see He Who Created All Things.
In the meantime, we glimpse a premonition of that wonder. For this is the human being: A G-dly soul in a material body, light and darkness face-to-face within a single being.

Mutually Exclusive
==================
Wherever Light spreads, it does not find Darkness. For Light, Darkness does not exist.
Wherever Darkness spreads, it does not find Light. For Darkness, Light does not exist.
In the Time To Come, the two shall coincide and know one another in perfect union. At that nexus we will see He Who Created All Things.
In the meantime, we glimpse a premonition of that wonder. For this is the human being: A G-dly soul in a material body, light and darkness face-to-face within a single being.

· Golden Calf Made; Hur Killed (1313 BCE)
In the year 2448 from Creation (1313 BCE), Tammuz 16 was the 40th day following the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and the people of Israel wrongly expected Moses' return from the mountain (he would actually return on the following day). When their leader failed to return, they demanded from Aaron: "Make us a god that shall go before us". Hur (Moses' nephew, the son of Miriam and Caleb) tried to stop them and was killed by the mob. Aaron fashioned a calf of molten gold.

Британский художник, известный под странным псевдонимом My Dog Sighs, в своем родном Портсмуте наверняка уже давно стал любимцем всех сотрудников коммунальных служб, занимающихся уборкой улиц. Дело в том, что этот автор не может спокойно пройти мимо валяющейся на дороге консервной банки, будь она целая или смятая, ржавая или блестящая. Он обязательно ее подберет и бережно опустит в свою сумку: вскоре эта банка превратится в произведение искусства, забавного персонажа из арт-проекта Can Men Series, над которым My Dog Sighs работает уже достаточно давно.

Было бы опрометчиво утверждать, что он умеет манипулировать людьми, но если речь идет о манипуляциях едой, то здесь ему нет равных. Такое творчество называется Food Art, и выглядит как небольшая, но оригинальная серия скульптур "с огорода": все очень свежее и экологически чистое.

К фотографиям нужно присматриваться, разделять на составные части, чтобы найти суть – сердцевину. Чаще всего, она оказывается горькой, заставляющей прослезиться, поэтому сама Сильвия сравнивает свои работы с луком.
