Today in Jewish History
=======================

· Second Temple Completed (349 BCE)

The joyous dedication of the second Holy Temple (Beit HaMikdash) on the site of the 1st Temple in Jerusalem, was celebrated on the 3rd of Adar of the year 3412 from creation (349 BCE), after four years of work.

The First Temple, built by King Solomon in 833 BCE, was destroyed by the Babylonians in 423 BCE. At that time, the prophet Jeremiah prophesied: "Thus says the L-rd: After seventy years for Babylon will I visit you... and return you to this place." In 371 the Persian emperor Cyrus permitted the Jews to return to Judah and rebuild the Temple, but the construction was halted the next year when the Samarians persuaded Cyrus to withdraw permission. Achashverosh II (of Purim fame) upheld the moratorium. Only in 353 -- exactly 70 years after the destruction -- did the building of the Temple resume under Darius II.

DAILY DOSE: Joyful Emptiness

B"H

Joyful Emptiness
================

The beginning of all paths and the starting point of every climb is to open yourself to receive from Above.

How do you receive from Above?
By being empty.
For a vessel that is full cannot receive anything.

A person that is full of self-concern, of "what will become of me?" of "where life is taking me?"—such a person leaves no room for life to enter.

But a simple, open spirit is filled with joy from Above.

Today is the second of the two Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") days for the month of Adar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=47ED8CE774355E94CEE104C61D6F2E8D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (when a month has 30 days, both the last day of the month and the first day of the following month serve as the following month's Rosh Chodesh).

Special portions are added to the daily prayers: Hallel (Psalms 113-118) is recited -- in its "partial" form -- following the Shacharit morning prayer, and the Yaaleh V'yavo prayer is added to the Amidah and to Grace After Meals; the additional Musaf prayer is said (when Rosh Chodesh is Shabbat, special additions are made to the Shabbat Musaf). Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted.

Many have the custom to mark Rosh Chodesh with a festive meal and reduced work activity. The latter custom is prevalent amongst women, who have a special affinity with Rosh Chodesh -- the month being the feminine aspect of the Jewish Calendar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B15EE5E9D2074E801CAD0AE3423F9386&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Adar Joy

"When Adar enters," the Talmud declares, "we increase in joy [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=47ED8CE774355E94CEE104C61D6F2E8D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]." For this is "the month that was transformed for them from sorrow to joy, from mourning to festivity" (Esther 9:22) by the great miracle and victory of Purim [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1C01BA937B37A6F7FCF29065635093AA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]. Our sages advise that the month of Adar is an auspicious time for the Jewish people, so that if a Jew is faced with a challenging event (i.e., a court case, a medical procedure, etc.) he should endeavor to schedule it during Adar.

· Passing of Ibn Ezra (1164)

The highly regarded Biblical commentator, Rabbi Avraham ben Meir Ibn Ezra (1089?-1164), passed away on Adar 1.

· Passing of Shach (circa 1663)

Adar 1 is also the yahrtzeit (anniversary of the passing) of the great Halachist Rabbi Shabtai Hakohen Katz (1621-1663?), author of the Siftei Cohen commentary on Rabbi Yosef Caro's Code of Jewish Law. He is known as "Shach" -- an acronym of the name of his work, which serves to this day as a primary source of Halachah (Jewish law).

How do I Explain the Logic Behind my Parenting to my Child?
By Aron Moss
===========================================================

Dear Rabbi,

I tell my nine year old son that people who work hard will progress in life and have what they need.

Now I have a dilemma. There is a new electronic toy which costs $499, and more for each game! His cousin has one, many of his friends have it, but we have no intention of buying him one. We don't have the money [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=38937675F7E89ECB7F7BA41CFD1ECD04&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and even if we did, it is not one of our priorities -- there are far better things he can do with his time than play video games.

The problem is, my son does everything properly: he listens to us, puts in the effort at school and is now devastated that he has worked hard but still cannot have what he wants. How will I explain it to him?

Answer:

You have just been given a wonderful parenting [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=434B359546D6F0A292AD96CCB1A047E2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] opportunity. You have the chance to teach your child two vital truths: that he can't have everything, and that he can't always understand why.

The idea that kids needs to understand the rationale behind every one of their parents' decisions is incorrect. If children [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A2C5B61FEA4E6137E83B89095117D330&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] were capable of understanding their parents' every motive, then children could be parents themselves. It is precisely their inability to appreciate why every whim and fancy cannot be fed that makes them children. The parents' job is to set boundaries, and that means sometimes the answer is just no.

When a parent lays down the law and gives a clear no, they are doing their child an incredible favor. The child will learn an important life lesson: you don't always get what you want. Sometimes it seems unfair, sometimes it seems to be without any justification, but it happens, and it happens to everyone, and it happens throughout life. There will always be things we want and can't have.

Sadly, many children are never taught this. Their parents give them everything they want, and then when they grow older, they are shocked to discover that sometimes they can't have whatever they want. Often children reared this way become adults who think that their spouse [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=AD8D8B628268A483111F5FF417B9FA08&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], their friends, their country and G-d should all be giving them whatever they ask for. If only they were taught as kids that you can't have it all, they would be accepting of this as adults.

Your son deserves to be rewarded for his good behavior and hard work. Choose something he wants, just not the super expensive one. It isn't easy, but it is far better to endure the tantrum of a disappointed child for a few days than to have a spoilt child who will become and remain a spoiled adult for life. Like King Solomon [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=9684B9C907CEE9C6B4E2730DA69C82D1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] said (Proverbs 22:6 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=6EDA1E425A9463C84A7B16394D1EAA93&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), "Train the child in his way, so that when he is older he will not stray from it." Today he will be upset, but one day he will thank you.

See our Child-rearing [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=067C59B41C8CE9894132D4BD2C6ECA03&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] section from our Parenting [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=434B359546D6F0A292AD96CCB1A047E2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] minisite.

DAILY DOSE: Soul-Body Bonding

B"H
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Dedicated in memory of Matshidiso Maebe.
(Dedicate an email: http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=99ED3519C951E1EC9B66325FA653F816&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Soul-Body Bonding
=================

The human mind despises the body that houses it,
but the soul has only love.

The mind would soar to the heavens,
but for a body that chains it to the earth.
The mind would be consumed in divine oneness,
but for the body's delusion of otherness,
as though it had made itself.

But the soul sees only G-d.

In that very delusion of otherness,
in that madness of the human ego,
even there, the soul sees only G-d.
For she says, "This, too, is truth.
This is a distorted reflection of the Essence of all things,
of that which truly has neither beginning nor cause."

And so she embraces the bonds of the body,
works with the body, transforms the body.
Until the body, too, sees only G-d.

Rosh Chodesh Adar

Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Rosh Chodesh Observances

Today is the first of the two Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") days for the month of Adar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=0EA70B11E653724EB592ECEE1958ADCC&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (when a month has 30 days, both the last day of the month and the first day of the following month serve as the following month's Rosh Chodesh).

The latter custom is prevalent amongst women, who have a special affinity with Rosh Chodesh -- the month being the feminine aspect of the Jewish Calendar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=7AEEA1B4BCD06240D616635F3E40B052&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Tosfot Yomtov Appointed Rabbi of Krakow (1644)

The 30th of Shevat is celebrated by the descendents of Rabbi Yomtov Lipman Heller (1579-1654) as a day of thanksgiving, for his liberation and restoration after his imprisonment in Vienna in 1629.

Rabbi Yomtov Lipman was one of the important rabbinical figures of the early 17th century. Known as the "Tosfos Yomtov" after his commentary on the Mishnah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5525249DDD1F0B5FEBFA7E07881BBB90&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] by that name, he also authored important commentaries on the Rosh [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=650CB45A1B4D6C5510F3F2AD336DD3D2&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and other rabbinical works. A disciple of the famed Maharal of Prague [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=390591C7A7F1BF455AB422C60B38D611&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], Rabbi Yomtov Lipman was appointed, at the tender age of 18, to serve as a dayan (rabbinical judge) in in that city. He subsequently filled a number of prestigious rabbinical positions, including rabbi of Nikolsburg and of Vienna. In 1627 he was recalled to Prague to serve as the city's chief rabbi.

That position earned him powerful enemies when he refused to follow the dictates of Prague's rich and influential citizens and strove to relieve the burden imposed on the poor by the suffocating "crown taxes" imposed on the Jews. His enemies informed on him to the government, falsely accusing him of treason. In 1629, Rabbi Yomtov Lipman was arrested, tried and sentenced to death. The Jewish communities of Bohemia succeeded in having the sentence commuted and reduced to a heavy fine, and raised the funds for the payment of the first installment that secured his release. However, his enemies obtained an imperial decision that he could not officiate as rabbi in any town of the empire, leaving him homeless and destitute. It took many years for him to pay off the balance of the fine and be restored to his former position. It was only in the winter of 1644, when he settled in Krakow after being appointed chief rabbi of the city, that he felt that that he could celebrate his release and restoration.

Shevat 30th (the 1st day of Rosh Chodesh Adar)--the day that Rabbi Yomtov Lipman assumed the rabbinate of Krakow--was celebrated by him and his family as a day of thanksgiving to G-d. Rabbi Yomtov Lipman asked that future generations continue to mark the date, and the custom is upheld by his descendants to this day.
