· Lubavitcher Rebbe Arrives in US (1941)

After escaping Nazi-occupied Paris, and many perilous months in Vichy France, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=5689D29DEAAD37B101944BE94F3EDD52&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and his wife, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushkah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=ACA4E8689F6B26A3A67429D382D33383&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], boarded the SS Serpa Pinto in Lisbon, Portugal. On Monday, June 23--Sivan 28 on the Jewish calendar--at 10:30 A.M., they arrived in New York.

Shortly after his arrival, the Rebbe's father-in-law, the then Lubavitcher Rebbe Rabbi Yoseph Yitzchak Schneersohn [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=4BABD103593436EC1A4E491A57AFED6E&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (who had been rescued from Nazi-occupied Warsaw in 1940), appointed him to head the social and educational outreach [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B52B4461E49B475FDBA3BD789F963760&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] programs of Chabad-Lubavitch [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=3D44E8B427057FACC0E926DBF7D62F2D&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].
