Today's Laws & Customs
======================

· Ethics of the Fathers: Chapters 5 & 6

During the summer months, from the Shabbat after Passover until the Shabbat before Rosh Hashahah, we study a portion of the Talmud's Ethics of the Fathers ("Avot") each Shabbat afternoon. This week, we complete this year's cycle with the study of Chapters Five and Six.

Link: Ethics of the Fathers, Chapter 5 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DE299C6362C976D5A8FB59238B918AB5&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and Chapter 6 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=77DBB8063D2508C86A033615FF6975BA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]

· Selichot

The series of Selichot ("supplication") prayers [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=093515B22738383FDE10A73B3D43FB18&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] recited in preparation for the "Days of Awe" of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur begin this Saturday night, after midnight (after the Ashkenazic custom; the Sephardic community begins on the 1st of Elul). On subsequent days, the custom is to recite the Selichot in the early morning hours, before the morning prayers, each morning up to and including Elul 29, the eve of Rosh Hashanah.

· Elul Observances

As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionaly a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1 [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=8295BB89CF4740E013A1883C2A379352&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=C3B391D47530758239AD7C1402B21C80&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] ("return" to G-d), prayer [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=A1F61717AE7081D331D19EEDAB8526BA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], charity [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B767F41C191CECA1A6D7CD622D693F92&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], and increased Ahavat Yisrael [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=FF35B93D92F66D14569E55DBF414C3E7&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1436D39B7D9BBB07B55F114EEF85C820&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."

Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=AC0F2F80AF8E0BF6878B45D4EA36C8BA&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=11B235DA0CF9D3F70ECD810C55E9F0F6&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2C5F538F735264724F6D8136D19AA35A&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and mezuzot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=CDFF64EA0F1FDC8D027719B6DD93446C&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

· Creation (3761 BCE)

The 1st day of creation, on which G-d created existence [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D4DD89A79210D6865E31EF85C7DB97AE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], time [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=B316775F35A23B505F611556C0AC0FB5&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], matter [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=625053A10E14FD9605BC943A2DB3E375&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], darkness [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=DCDAC3E51CDD000C82408D8DD9FB39FE&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and light [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=E37BC69AA23DF83218E57857A54FF715&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], was the 25th of Elul. (Rosh Hashanah, on which we mark "the beginning of Your works", is actually the 6th day of creation, on which the world attained the potential for the realization of its purpose, with the creation of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. Rosh Hashanah is therefore the day from which the Jewish calendar begins to count the years of history; the 1st day of creation thus occurred on the 25th of Elul of what is termed -1 from creation.

· Jerusalem Walls Rebuilt (335 BCE)
