Editor's Note:

Dear readers,

This week marks the beginning of the Jewish month of Shevat. At its center we celebrate Tu B'Shevat, the new year of the trees. Five days before that is 10 Shevat, the day that the Rebbe, of righteous memory, assumed leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

I remember asking an elder chassid if he was present at the historic gathering when the Rebbe formally accepted the position in 1951. "Are you kidding?" he replied. "I was busy establishing a Jewish center thousands of miles away. The Rebbe would not even think of having me abandon my post to attend."

In my humble opinion, that anecdote characterizes what would soon be known as the Rebbe's approach. He taught the immense value of action as well as the responsibility we have to others, sometimes even at the expense of our own spiritual enrichment.

Let's take the Rebbe's example to heart. Meetings are good, but deeds are better.

Here's to an action-packed month!

Menachem Posner,
