Today's Laws & Customs
======================
· Rosh Chodesh Observances
Today is the second of the two Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") days for the month of "Iyar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=2EB215F23947EC44EE9B9E7418F09389&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]" (when a month has 30 days, both the last day of the month and the first day of the following month serve as the following month's Rosh Chodesh).
Special portions are added to the daily prayers: Hallel (Psalms 113-118) is recited -- in its "partial" form -- following the Shacharit morning prayer, and the Yaaleh V'yavo prayer is added to the Amidah and to Grace After Meals; the additional Musaf prayer is said (when Rosh Chodesh is Shabbat, special additions are made to the Shabbat Musaf). Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted.
Many have the custom to mark Rosh Chodesh with a festive meal and reduced work activity. The latter custom is prevalent amongst women, who have a special affinity with Rosh Chodesh -- the month being the feminine aspect of the Jewish Calendar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=EC72BD11E34F3A2EBF8B7976DB284028&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ].

· Count "Seventeen Days to the Omer" Tonight
Tomorrow is the seventeenth day of the Omer Count. Since, on the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening, we count the omer for tomorrow's date tonight, after nightfall: "Today is seventeen days, which are two weeks and three days, to the Omer." (If you miss the count tonight, you can count the omer all day tomorrow, but without the preceding blessing).
The 49-day "Counting of the Omer" retraces our ancestors' seven-week spiritual journey from the Exodus to Sinai. Each evening we recite a special blessing and count the days and weeks that have passed since the Omer; the 50th day is Shavuot [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=88E78E370D4C9EF4BB35E1E92B17A773&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ], the festival celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Sinai.
Tonight's Sefirah: Tifferet sheb'Tifferet -- "Harmony in Harmony"
The teachings of Kabbalah explain that there are seven "Divine Attributes" -- Sefirot -- that G-d assumes through which to relate to our existence: Chessed, Gevurah, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut ("Love", "Strength", "Beauty", "Victory", "Splendor", "Foundation" and "Sovereignty"). In the human being, created in the "image of G-d," the seven sefirot are mirrored in the seven "emotional attributes" of the human soul: Kindness, Restraint, Harmony, Ambition, Humility, Connection and Receptiveness. Each of the seven attributes contain elements of all seven--i.e., "Kindness in Kindness", "Restraint in Kindness", "Harmony in Kindness", etc.--making for a total of forty-nine traits. The 49-day Omer Count is thus a 49-step process of self-refinement, with each day devoted to the "rectification" and perfection of one the forty-nine "sefirot."

· Construction of Second Temple Begins (370 BCE)
Fifty three years following the destruction of the First Holy Temple (see Jewish History for the 9th of Av [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=D767E0EE52EF0C636C0BF104CF084626&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]), Zerubabel and Joshua the High Priest began construction of the Second Temple, with permission from King Cyrus of Persia.
The offering of sacrifices had actually commenced a few months earlier, on the vacant lot where the 1st Temple stood, however it was only after the construction started on the 1st of Iyar that the Levites [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=BA17398E1C25A1EDB1565562ABB23D0F&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] began accompanying the service with song and music.
The construction was later halted after the hostile Samaritans supplied false slanderous information to Cyrus about the Jews' intentions. The construction was resumed many years later, and completed 21 years later under the reign of King Darius (see Jewish History for the Third of Adar [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=10C8F88288F4FB20B8DB7933CD21D016&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ]).

· Passing of R. Menachem Mendel of Horodok (1788)
Chassidic master Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Horodok (1730?-1788), also known as Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, was one of the leading disciples of the second leader of the Chassidic Movement, Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch. Upon the latter's passing in 1772, R. Menachem Mendel was regarded by his colleagues as the leader of the Chassidic community in Russia, and Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=958618E6744AD3E1164681648F00DDD0&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] considered him his rebbe and mentor. In 1777, R. Menachem Mendel led a group of 300 Chassidim to the Holy Land [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=893F15C5DA1F9D948BEBC2BE0BA063E1&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] and established Chassidic communities in Safed and Teberias. Rabbi Menachem Mendel passed away on the 1st of Iyar of 1788, and is buried in Tiberias.
