Editor's Note:

Dear readers,

Who doesn't love fresh-baked challah bread? Nothing can really compare. Challah, however, is not just the great tasting bread we eat on Shabbat, but is the actual piece of dough that we separate and remove before baking bread. And the commandment to "take challah" [ http://link.Chabad.org/go.asp?li=1C7F9F01B465F5D9D0FEE336536E4566&ui=F8C16ABBBCDB72AD0024EE2F647D78D2 ] is given in this week's Torah portion.

Bread signifies sustenance. (Perhaps that is why in English, like Hebrew, we often refer to money as "bread" or "dough.") The piece of challah that we take is a small piece, but it represents the meaning behind all we do. The piece is reserved for our Creator. It is the recognition that all we have is a gift from G‑d and that all that we do is inspired by Him. And it is taken before we begin the process, to remind us that before we do anything else we must first stop, recognize and thank. Then we can continue to bake, to eat and to enjoy.

Why Is Joshua Referred to As "Bin" Nun? (By Baruch S. Davidson)

When the Torah mentions the names of the spies, everyone is referred to as "so-and-so ben (son of) so-and-so." The only exception is Joshua, who is called Joshua "bin" Nun. Why bin and not ben?

The Vacuum of Choice (Based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe)

On whose initiative were the spies sent? The way the story is told in Numbers, it was by divine command. But when Moses recounts these events 40 years later, he tells the people that it was their idea.

My Favorite Kind of Night (By Jay Litvin)

In the Litvin family, "quality time" doesn't always happen the way it happens in parenting books. In fact, we've discovered that it often has more to do with quantity than with quality.
