General Overview:

In this week's reading, Va'eira, Pharaoh refuses to allow the Israelites to leave Egypt, even after Aaron exhibits miraculous powers, transforming his staff into a serpent. The first seven plagues strike Egypt: Blood, Frogs, Lice, Wild Beasts, Pestilence, Boils, and Fiery Hail.

THE PARSHAH

Va'eira
Exodus 6:2–9:35

Blood, frogs, lice, wild animals, pestilence, boils, hail -- all to get the Jews out of Egypt and Egypt out of the Jews... Also: Pharaoh as the ultimate frog, the difference between selfish martyrdom and true self-sacrifice, and Moses gets an answer (of sorts) from G-d on the ancient question of human suffering.

Torah in Ten: Va'eira (By Chaim Miller)
